Boxing Day food (in holiday home)

Any ideas for Boxing Day food?

We won’t have leftovers as in a holiday home arriving 3pm Christmas Eve and eating out Christmas Day.

We also won’t know how much general ‘stock’ will be available, so will be restricted to what we take with us.

6 adults, not vegetarian and not massive fish fans.

Thanks!

I’d go for some type of casserole dish because it freezes well, and tastes better than fresh so you’re not compromising on quality. Boeuf Bourguignon would be a nice contrast to the turkey the day before.
I’d get some nice starters from m&s or similar, a few bottles of a lovely red, and some par baked crusty bread to mop up. All very easy and relaxing but hearty and wintry.

It’s flexible so you could heat it on the hob or in the oven or in the microwave depending on what’s available, and have it in the fridge or freezer depending on how much space you have. It’s the kind of dish that can sit out on the side for a while too without overly panicking about food poisoning as long as it’s heated through well.

I would do...
Breakfast - bacon and or sausage rolls
Then shove a chicken and roasties in the oven then go for a lovely long walk

Boil up simple carrots and brocolli
Readymade yorkshires

Evening - cheese and biscuits chicken sarnies from left overs

This is a list of options

Quality Street celebration chocolates
Mince pies
Scones
Fruitcake
Toast
Biscuits
Sandwiches or a fry up
Jacket potato
Baked apples and ham
Tuna and lettuce wraps
Egg soldier in a cup
Sausage and mash
Leftovers
Cold cuts of meat
Popcorn
Fruit salad
Cheese board
Smoked salmon
Cupcakes
Brownies
Chocolate mug cake
Pizza
Chutney and pancakes
Coffee
Dips
Canapes

Try Sainsburys- they have a mini booklet. You can order in advance. Lidl, Aldi etc are good as well. I believe Waitrose stock Christmas food too.

Selection of lovely cheeses, a big pork pie, salad, good bread for lunch. Make or buy a really good curry for the evening. Take a Christmas cake and the ingredients to compose a fabulous trifle.

Can you take a turkey crown with you? Cook it Christmas day evening once you’re back of Christmas Eve after arriving.

As others have said, bread, ham, pickles, salad, cheese, soup for lunch. Then use the turkey for a curry

Ignore the moaners saying it's too early to think about. I cannot understand people coming onto the Christmas board to bemoan people planning and looking forward to Christmas!

It's pretty standard, I think! They don't pay any attention to where the thread is when they spot it in active threads; they're just so keen to come and post in a Grinch-like fashion! Xmas Hmm

I’d cook a piece of gammon in advance, to have cold with coleslaw and jacket potatoes.
And/or maybe a macaroni pie - mine is invariably very popular. The only faff is grating a LOT of mature cheddar, otherwise it’s just a case of mixing cooked pasta, eggs, milk, and the cheese, and whacking it in the oven.

V nice warm or cold -or room temp anyway.

See, now you lot are to blame , I was noseying round the deli aisle in M&S yesterday mentally listing all the coleslaw, anti-pasti and flavoured breads I want for over Christmas Xmas Grin

RainbowANDThunder · 27/06/2021 15:31

I enjoy the left over meats with mash and salad, pickles etc

But if no left overs, how about ‘party’ type food.
U can get them from most shops, can you do a food order for Xmas eve at the holiday let? And hope for the best ?

MotherofTerriers · 27/06/2021 15:46

I'd be tempted to advance cook and take a really big ham. It keeps well, could be the focus of a boxing day buffet with pickles, cheese, nice bread, salads etc and you could use leftovers for breakfast, ham and eggs, carbonara etc
Do any supermarkets deliver to the holiday house?

mayblossominapril · 27/06/2021 16:38

Pick a few things from the Donald Russell catalogue and just cook when you arrive. You can order in advance so no stress trying to shop near Christmas

idontlikealdi · 27/06/2021 16:40

Gammon and chips.

Thanks everyone for the great suggestions… we’re currently waiting to firm up our plans for Christmas Day lunch, then when we gift the cottage to my mom for her birthday will be able to start talking about what everyone wants to do Christmas Eve and Boxing Day. So exciting!
