Right, need a boys' equivalent of Pippi Longstocking for boy twin!

CantSleepWontSleep · 17/11/2007 20:15

After reading some comments about Pippi earlier, I am now going to get it for Christmas for a 7 year old girl, but she is a twin, so I need an equivalent type of book for her brother.

Dh has suggested Dr Seuss, but both Amazon and The Book People are out of stock.

Can anyone suggest another good alternative please?

COuld you get a different book by Lauren Child? Not sure what the age range is for the Clarice Bean books or if they are suitable for boys - we only have her Charlie and Lola books but DS1 loves them.

sixlostmonkeys · 17/11/2007 20:32

I currently have a nice dr seuss book listed on ebay
cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=140180547766&ssPageName=STRK:MESE:IT

I'll put my thinking head on and try to think of some alternatives.

MrsBadger · 17/11/2007 20:38

little tim and the brave sea captain

CantSleepWontSleep · 17/11/2007 20:46

I've not heard of that series before MrsB - are they good?

The parents will of course think we've picked the books based on our names - dd is Pippa and dh is Tim .

Maybe another type of Astrid Lindgren?

Amazon selection of Astrid Lindgren

I can personally recommend The Brothers Lionheart, and the books about EMIL.

Pannacotta · 17/11/2007 21:00

Good point, I loved the Astrid Lindgren books when I was young. Tomten is lovely for Xmas, super illustrations too.

Katymac · 17/11/2007 21:02

Horrid Henry?
Just William?

CantSleepWontSleep · 17/11/2007 21:04

Yes, the Tomten does look good for Christmas, but it's also out of stock - bah!

OP posts:
CantSleepWontSleep · 17/11/2007 21:07

Not sure that Horrid Henry would go down well, as he's called Henry , and his cousin (very close) is William! Would both have been great ideas otherwise!

Sure you could get it from somewhere else. Just google it and you are sure to find it elsehere, prob an on line independent bookseller.

QuintessentialShadow · 17/11/2007 21:08

Emil is a mischief maker extraordinaire, and he gets into trouble quite co-incidentally, he means well, it just goes belly up. The series about Emil has the same "feel" to it as the Pippi books. Emil will have the reader in stitches.

RosaLuxMundi · 17/11/2007 21:09

I second the Tim book - you can't go wrong with Edward Ardizzone - fantastic illustrations.

francagoestohollywood · 17/11/2007 21:14

I'm reading ds Asdtrid Lindgren's the children of noisy village and he's liking it so far

CantSleepWontSleep · 17/11/2007 21:30

Is Asterix any good?

OP posts:
robinpud · 17/11/2007 21:38

What about the Dirty Bertie series- Pants/ Worms etc. My ds loves them.

maisiestar · 17/11/2007 21:53

Another vote here for Emil and the Detectives by Erich Kastner. I think there was a series and they are absolutely great. Asterix is also a perennial favourite and there are so many that you'll have christmases sorted for a while.

EachPeachPearMum · 17/11/2007 21:55

Maybe Moomins? Good for both boys and girls, and still on a scandi theme!
I'm enjoying reading this thread CSWS, can you guess why?

Or maybe Tintin?

MuffinMclay · 17/11/2007 21:56

CSWS - they have lots of Dr Seuss books in Waterstones in our local town (same town as the Christening cake shop ). Don't know if dd lets you go in there though (Ds screams whenever we go in).

They might have them at Waterstones.com too.

EachPeachPearMum · 17/11/2007 21:56

Am going to get the Pippi for dd i think will just be put away for a while....
I already bought all the Moomins ...

Can you tell I love books?

LucyLasticBand · 17/11/2007 21:57

can;t they both read pippi longstocking@?

SoMuchToBits · 17/11/2007 21:58

We really like the Jeremy James books by David Henry Wilson. A couple of the compilations are available in paperback from Amazon (Causing Chaos with Jeremy James and Triple Trouble with Jeremy James). They are a little like Horrid Henry, but, I think much better written, and Jeremy James tends to get into trouble without meaning to, rather than being actually naughty IYSWIM. I found them quite amusing, as did my 6 year old ds.

CantSleepWontSleep · 17/11/2007 21:59

Waterstones much more expensive though MM .

Don't know moomins or Dirty Bertie - will go look.

The only problem I have with stuff like the Emil ones is that one book isn't enough, but the whole series is too much!

OP posts:
EachPeachPearMum · 17/11/2007 22:04

Oh Moomins are fab! So lovely and quirky, sort of in the same way that Pippi is. There is a special set out at the moment (i think book people have it!) which is 6 books for a good price...

EachPeachPearMum · 17/11/2007 22:05

Did you never see the Tv series? Was staple viewing I thought?

CantSleepWontSleep · 17/11/2007 22:08

Nope, passed me by, although have heard of the programme. When were they shown [hopeful of being too young].
Nothing coming up for moomin on book people though.
