Would you get a nearly 2 year old boy a doll and pram?

I think DS would love it, but DH said No Way. I wasn't going to get an all singing all dancing all weeing weirdy doll, just a normal one and a pram for him to push it around in and maybe a play bottle to give it because that's what children seem to like, girls and boys... but DH thinks I am bonkers. Am I? He was bad enough when he saw a play kitchen on the list, but I just about managed to convince him that it wasn't just for girls.

I bought ine for DS1 when DS2 was born - he was 19m. They are 4 and 5 now and they still push things - the doll, teddies, various animals around in it.

Could you get someone else to buy it for your DS? I bought one for my godson when he was the same age - mostly because his Mum told me that her DH wouldn't let her get one!

MummyGee · 12/11/2007 13:42

yes

ChasingSquirrels · 12/11/2007 13:45

I would, but didn't as my mum has one at her house that he played with - it did migrate to our house for a while when he was very into it.

QueenBhannae · 12/11/2007 13:46

I bought one for my ds when he was 18mths and it is the one thing he plays with daily.Fair enough the baby is often substituted for a selection of cars
but he LOVES it.
I got him a fold up graco one in red annd grey with a little hood for £10 but it was in a set that had a car seat and travel cot changing bag etc so great value.
He pops the car seat on the pushchair and whizzes up and down until he can make it fly off.
Hours of fun!

YES YES YES YES YES!!!!!

Ds had one for Christmas 2 weeks before he turned 2.

He loved it. It was his best present.

He used to play with them at the toddler group all the time.

I did get a blue buggy and a blue baby to keep dh happy though He got a feeding set for it just before dd was born.

Does your dh ever push your pram? If so then ds is just being like him.

MuffinMclay · 12/11/2007 13:53

Yes!

Ds (18 months) has one (a very pink, very cheap one) and loves pootling around with it. My dh was horrified when he saw it but has been forced to admit that it has been one of the great buys.

My ds won't put dolls, teddy bears etc in his though. If I put them in he throws them out before going on his merry way.

IdreamofClooney · 12/11/2007 13:54

I don;t see the issue with Men and their son's having prams - as someone else noted men do in fact push their off spring round in prams don;t they?

I got DS a blue buggy from ELC. I didn;t actually buy a doll as he is happy pushing trains, cars etc in the buggy. I did give him access two of my dolls from when I was a child and he is not remotely interested. I keep finding them lying prone on the floor after he has chucked them out of the buggy to make more room for vehicles.

He loves actual babies though so perhaps its the fact the my dolls are so freaky looking that puts him off (they are both rather worse for wear after 10 years of being played with and 14 years in an attic!

Flame · 12/11/2007 13:56

No pram because we have one and they take up too much bloody room, but DS is getting a doll for Christmas (he'll be 22 months). He loves babies and this way there won't be a fight for DD's anymore!

The power of mnet - I was going to buy one of those gorgeous brio engineer dolls lissielou linked to and now they're all gone! Thanks a bunch!

OracleInaCoracle · 12/11/2007 20:29

here is somewhere else that sells them. it is lovely, and ds will love it!

beansprout · 12/11/2007 20:33

Why not? Ds has a buggy and will be getting a "baby" when dc2 is born next year.

Thomcat · 12/11/2007 20:34

Yes, I WOULD give a boy a doll and pram.

Do dad's look make and look after babies - yes, so why shouldn't a boy play at being daddy?

Boys love babies, so why not???????

oregonianabroad · 19/11/2007 14:13

Saw this late but we bought ds1 a doll and pram last year.
it is a very good idea. but we had a lot of flack from people. I used it as an opportunity to have huge debates about gender roles, but that's just me.

good luck.

purpleflower · 19/11/2007 14:16

My freinds little girl gave my 13m DS a bright pink pushchair because he loved it. DH was not impressed but he accepts it now because it was agift and he's seen how much DS loves it. I'm not allowed to buy a ababy for it though so he has a teddy in it!

If he likes it get him 1

Hekete · 19/11/2007 14:19

Yes I would and I have. I do hate this boys can't have dolls shit.

LazyLinePainterJane · 19/11/2007 14:21

Ds has 2 buggies and will be getting a doll for CHristmas. he is 2.3 and is far from the onTy one at M&T that plays with dolls. I think that DH secretly finds it a little odd, getting him a doll but knows better than to express such an opinion!

All 3 of my boys have their own pushchair and baby. But the pushchairs wer £4 each and the dolls are cheapo cheapo.
They play with them for a while and sometimes push each other around in the pushchairs. I can't see a problem, but for me it makes a wonderful change from playing with cars and trains

teuch · 19/11/2007 14:35

absolutely!!

LedodgyDickinson · 19/11/2007 14:38

Yes my ds is two on Sunday and he has a lovely pink pushchair with strawberries on it for his doll.

notnowbernard · 19/11/2007 14:41

If he had shown an iterest or enjoyed playing with them, yes. In the same way I would get DD a garage or train set...

However, she never has and doesn't play with them if they are available to her.

So I wouldn't buy one just for the sake of it, IYSWIM.

madamez · 19/11/2007 14:43

I bought my DS the ELC buggy and boy baby last Xmas and he has played with them lots - he was pushing buggies at playgroup as were all the kids, so I thought, fine, get him one. Luckily his father is totally laid back about such things (used to wear mascara to school himself) and we have agreed that DS will be bought Bratz and Barbies should he ask for them, as well as cars and trucks. And toy swords and guns (gets ready for explosions).

notnowbernard · 19/11/2007 14:50

In fact, would love to get a garage and cars. Am sure it's more fun than changing Baby Annabel's nappy, feeding Baby Annabel, dressing Baby Annabel, taking Baby Annabel to the shops...

(Is this not my life anyway?!)

GooseyLoosey · 19/11/2007 14:53

Yes, if he wanted one. Nurturing - what a great value to instill in any child

VictorianSqualor · 19/11/2007 14:56

Definitely, my DS has an older sister so he plays with hers but he loves dolls, dressing up, barbie/bratz anything girly tbh, he also loves lego and cars.
I honestly don't think it makes any difference to them whatsoever what us adults deem to be for boys/girls.
Maybe get him a doctors outfit?and a baby doll to be his 'patient'?
