Having done the turkey thing years ago, we no longer bother and indulge ourselves with something else really special....beef wellington (with a proper homemade mushroom pate..hmmm...)

..what would you really like? am looking for more inspiration....

I've already made it clear that I'm not doing the full cahoot this year, after almost setting fire to my oven last year!

I think we'll probably have some sort of tart, veggie for me and dd1, meaty for dp and dd2, with roasted, spiced new potatoes, other roasted vege and sauteed savoy cabbage.

I don't usually bother with a starter but will probably do olives etc with a drink, whilst finishing off the lunch. We then have a huuuge Duchy Originals Christmas pudding, which we'll probably have with cream and brandy.

Christmas day tea always involves sandwiches, salad and pickles etc, with meringues and fruit and Christmas cake.

Rhubarb · 11/11/2007 16:54

beans on toast.

oxocube · 11/11/2007 17:00

Rhubarb. That's what I'm tempted to do this year. I don't mind the cooking, but its the clearing up (usually solo ) which I object to.

scienceteacher · 11/11/2007 17:01

I tend to do Delia (with Nigella's turkey roasting method)

MuffinMclay · 11/11/2007 21:53

We'll be doing rib of beef, potatoes, veg etc. Pudding tbd - won't be Christmas pudding though as we both hate it. Perhaps a panettone bread and butter pudding, or fruit and ice cream.

We haven't had turkey for a few years now. I don't dislike it but I like other things more.

ConnorTraceptive · 12/11/2007 13:15

You should tell Mr Pesto that actually turkey is an American tradition not a british one so if he wants to be truelly traditional you should have goose

Love goose, if you roast the potatoes in the fat they are bloody lovely.

AnAngelWithin · 12/11/2007 13:21

we usually have a full english for brekkie on christmas day so that we are full up!! usually do dinner for around 4pm. i usually buy a boned turkey joint/crown or duck for dinner. Not decided which this year yet. I do roast potatoes, boiled potatoes, carrots, peas, brocolli, cauliflower cheese, sausages wrapped in bacon, stuffing, bread sauce, cranberry sauce,

TrinityRhino · 12/11/2007 13:22

we're having m&s turkey breasts, roast pots, carrots, brocolli and gravy

yummy and simple

PestoMonster · 12/11/2007 13:27

Thanks for that Connor, I will tell Mr P (as we haven't ordered turkey yet), but I won't hold my breath

nimnom · 12/11/2007 13:29

We're having rolled turkey breast done on the bbq and all the trimmings.

ComeOVeneer · 12/11/2007 13:43

We are having....

Potted crab with rocket salad and melba toast.
Goose with roast potatoes, brussels with pancetta, lemon and pine nuts, braised red cabbage, stuffing, nigella's coca cola ham, madiera wine gravy and cranberry sauce.
Champagne and pink grapefruit granita.
Cheese and crackers.
Christmas pudding with brandy butter and cream.
Coffee with florentines and truffles and mince pies.

lilolilmanchester · 12/11/2007 13:46

We do goose. As ConnorTraceptive (fab name!) says, the fat makes the best roast potatoes. Sit the goose on a rack over the roasting tin and drain the fat off reguarly. It keeps in the fridge for months so fab roast potatoes for ages afterwards.
We have the same things with goose as we used to with turkey (stuffing, sprouts, carrots, mashed swede, parmesan roast parsnips, roast potatoes, red cabbage, sausage meat circles wrapped in bacon). This is making me hungry!

ConnorTraceptive · 12/11/2007 14:28

ComeOveneer please talk to me about how you are making your brussel sprouts and your gravy I am intrigued

tasjaSAmuminUK · 12/11/2007 14:33

Irishmum - will ask dh tonight. He does the cooking. I think it is a Hugh Fearnley-W recipe.

irishmum · 12/11/2007 16:20

Thanks,Muffin.Will check in later.xoxo

Mercy · 12/11/2007 16:31

Think I will do roast beef. dh will have some ready made veggie thing from M&S as usual.

Christmas pudding of course.

Ham in coke, salad, chutney and other bits and bobs for tea - and mince pies.

What veg goes with roast beef? We have broccoli, carrots, peas with every roast but what else is there?

yummybunnymummy · 12/11/2007 18:36

Brussels with pancetta and chestnuts is a favorite in our house (long before it was all over the telly last year!!), although it sounds yummy with lemon and pine nuts..and bread sauce..hmmm....it has to be done..
I am so hungry and am sure it's to do with the cold snap in the weather but I feel so christmassy now...have started my food plan..

celeriac and chestnut soup is delicious over winter. mushroom risotto, home made creme brulee, Ham (cooked in orange and apple juice with cinnamon sticks..tasty.)..I can't wait..xxx

Nowt! For the first time ever we are going out for lunch. Yay!

lizziemun · 12/11/2007 20:11

We just have a normal sunday dinner, but with a rib of beef.

It will be cooked between me and mum.

We don't go overboard as just won't be eaten. Mum and DH may hav christmas pudding, me and dd1 wil probaly just have ice cream.

Tea will cheese and crackers and christmas cake if anyone want anything.

BadKitten · 12/11/2007 20:51

We are having turkey and trimmings. I'm hoping the spouts will be home grown but after 2 attacks by cabbage white caterpillars they are looking a little on the tragic side.
I will make a trifle for dessert and we will all look at it and decide we can't fit it in (happens every year I do one)

MuffinMclay · 12/11/2007 21:09

Irishmum - there's not much to the beef recipe, apparently. We get 2 rib's worth of beef for 2 people (we like having lots of leftovers), although Hugh F-W says 3-4 ribs for 10 people.

Coat the outide in mustard. Brown in a frying pan. Then cook for about half an hour (longer if you like it more well done or if it is bigger) in the oven at about 200 degrees. Leave to rest for 20 minutes before eating.

Sunshinemummy · 12/11/2007 21:11

Goose this year but not how. Will have with roasties, parmesan parnsips, sprouts with bacon in Reisling, creamed leeks. Other swtuff on the side as well. If you can cook turkey, you can cook a goose as similar in terms of making sure it doesn't dry out.
