Eve boxes & Xmas stockings & Xmas gift

Somebodyimportant1 · 23/12/2020 04:55

I am looking for suggestions for eve boxes for a 9-year-old boy & 5-year-old girl. The gifts and stockings are all sorted but I don't know what to put in the eve boxes. I am thinking I would maybe cancel eve boxes this year. I think it's all just overindulgence, isn't it? But I am still eager to hear about ideas. Thanks

We do PJs, a new book and small chocolates (coins or similar) and a small novelty toy plus some reindeer food. A relative sorts it as their Christmas present every year. You could do anything really couldn't you... or nothing as you say

KitKatastrophe · 23/12/2020 06:54

For me it's too late to start thinking about it now! But I think xmas eve boxes usually contain pyjamas, hot chocolate and a DVD so I guess you could pick those up from a supermarket today.

Have you done eve boxes before, will your kids be expecting one? If not I wouldn't bother.

Fcuk38 · 23/12/2020 06:57

Don’t do it simple. Bloody hell how many gifts do kids need.

inquietant · 23/12/2020 06:58

We have never done 'boxes' but we always have hot chocolate, read the same books and watch something nice together. I think that's enough for my lot. My mum always wanted to give me presents on Christmas Eve and somehow it seemed to dilute Christmas Day.

Somebodyimportant1 · 23/12/2020 07:08

I have done eve boxes before but you wouldn't believe I can not even remember what goes in them anymore. Too too much stress these past months 🤦🏽‍♀️🙄

We always do Xmas Eve boxes but this year a local company started doing sweet deliveries, and they've put lovely boxes together which they're delivering on the day.
Took the pressure off - all I'm adding to them is a pair of fluffy socks and pjs!

They've even included reindeer food.

RhubarbAndMustard · 23/12/2020 07:19

New Pjs to wear Xmas eve night, our usual Xmas book collection, reindeer food and this year some hand bells to ring on Xmas eve.

The only thing I buy usually are the pj's.

LastChristmas20 · 23/12/2020 07:20

If you've not done it by now then just don't bother.

inquietant · 23/12/2020 07:20

Reindeer food gives me the rage if it has glitter in it. I try not to be the Grinch but so much about Christmas seems to be about creating litter in new ways.

OohKittens · 23/12/2020 07:25

We do christmas eve sacks. This year they have
Pjs
Slippers
Dressing gown
Fleece blanket
Bath bomb
Annual
Warmies soft toy
Sweets.

Usually we go to the panto Christmas eve so they would have new shoes and clothes plus the panto ticket.

Mine get to open a present from under the tree after mass on xmas eve, that's enough, I'm not getting involved in boxes.

kittybee · 23/12/2020 07:28

We’ve always done Christmas Eve boxes, but year on year the contents change. You could put in new mugs, hot chocolate and marshmallows, a dvd, new pyjamas, popcorn, colouring books. This year we don’t need any more mugs so I’m putting in chocolate spoons to make hot chocolate. We don’t need any more dvd’s so one we already own will go in, possibly ‘It’s a Wonderful Life.’ We also don’t need pyjamas this year, so I’ve bought new fluffy bedding for a cosy Christmas Eve sleep. Every year our copy of ‘Twas The Night Before Christmas’ goes in, and is read in my bed snuggled up. I also put in reindeer food (without glitter), and a new tree decoration, and we have popcorn kernels in the cupboard so will decant them. Happy Christmas Eve!

This is what I am planning for my lot. I am struggling as is for Christmas presents and stocking fillers!
2anddone · 23/12/2020 07:32

We only do Christmas Eve pjs, chosen by the dc and kept in the cupboard from when we buy them until Christmas Eve but not put in a box.
Christmas Eve boxes are the one thing of Christmas I don't 'get' they are getting presents the next day so why do they need more? But then I am quite grinchy and prefer the dc to have and open all of their gifts on Christmas Day and not given to them to open over the Christmas period (Boxing Day or whenever family members see them) as I find their behaviour goes badly downhill if they are given things lots of days (only get Christmas and birthday gifts here, the rest of treats would be days out etc during the year)

MrJollyLivesNextDoor · 23/12/2020 07:38

Is this another American tradition that's caught on over here?

inquietant · 23/12/2020 07:41

It's not a tradition anywhere, it is just a marketing concept.

Moonandstars25 · 23/12/2020 07:41

I’ve done one for DS even though he won’t get it (he is 13 months) and one for my husband and I to share. I hadn’t planned on one but then crappy year, combined with now being in tier 4 so not having my mum coming over for a few days (which would of given me a break) means I have indulged myself. DS has a couple of books (board books), a cuddly toy, Xmas PJs and a new wooden puzzle. For my husband and I, I’ve put in some cosy socks, nice hot chocolate, chocolate and posh marshmallows as well as a jigsaw puzzle that he and I can do together between Xmas eve and day after Boxing Day when he goes back to work.

wendz86 · 23/12/2020 07:45

I'm just doing pyjamas, book and hot chocolate stirrers.

Moonandstars25 · 23/12/2020 07:48

I mean understand it, not get it, my 13 month won’t understand it. I know it is totally for me and I’m embracing that. we’ve not be able to do anything that I had wanted for his first year of life let alone other big things planned including many significant family birthdays this year and family due to come over from the USA who we haven’t seen for years. No 1st birthday party, no christening, he hasn’t met half his family as they’ve either been lockdown in the north or we are. Someone will probably tell me I’m wasting my money or being ridiculous but so what- the year has been crappy enough.

purpledagger · 23/12/2020 09:38
