Too much for a stocking?

When I was a little kid we used to get a pillow case at the end of the bed filled with stuff. I remember it being loads but not sure if that’s just distorted happy Christmas memories. Must remember to ask my Mum but I remember her say she always got us too much.

DD has just turned 5 and I’m worried I’ve got too much for her stocking, which is actually a sack and is way bigger than I realised when I got it online a few years ago. I’ll list

Colouring book (simpler form of adult colouring to stop her using mine!)
Hair clips
Card game
Bath bomb
Book
Soft toy reindeer (only thing she asked for)
Small Space model
Paint pencils
Make your own catapult
Make your own dragon fly thing

So it’s ten things. Plus some chocolate. Does this sound ok? It’s not actually going to look much in the ridiculous sack thing but not sure if I have time to get a proper stocking as in wales lockdown so would have to buy online.

What goes in your kids stockings.

I put 12 parcels in stockings (for the 12 days of Christmas!)

Readysetcake · 22/12/2020 07:20

Forgot to add she then has 6 presents from us
2 board games
A marble run
A science kit
Frozen Dress up tiara and shoes
Paint a unicorn.

Too much with the Stocking? I must have spent about £100 on stocking and presents.
She will obviously then get things from grand parents aunts uncles etc at some point.

I must confess that's a fraction of what my 4 year old has got in her stocking but I have gone way way over the top every year since my 24 year old was born. I never learn 🤣. She's probably got 25-30 presents ranging from bubble bath and chocolate level gifts, incorporating some clothing and up to games, toys and Playmobil. Yours sounds far more sensible but personally I would chuck one more slightly exciting toy/game in there to give it that extra magical wow factor.

Desmondo2016 · 22/12/2020 07:22

But OP there is no right or wrong and your selection of presents sounds lovely x

daisypond · 22/12/2020 07:23

That sounds fine to me for the stocking. But we would only have done one or two other main presents, so your six main presents seem a lot to me.

Coronaquandry · 22/12/2020 07:25

We do loads but half of them are really tiny things (individually wrapped chocolates, a toothbrush, a pencil etc). What you've done sounds fine to me.

Cupcakegirl13 · 22/12/2020 07:25

I also have ten things in mine this year similar things to you ! It sounds lovely op.

Coronaquandry · 22/12/2020 07:26

(we don't do any "main" or "asked for" presents in stockings - they come from mummy and daddy rather than father Christmas. But everyone dies it differently and that's fine)

ImAllOut · 22/12/2020 07:28

That's not too much at all. Like a PP I tend to go a bit overboard, but my parents always did for me.

Lotsachocolateplease · 22/12/2020 07:28

I think I that’s a perfect amount! I usually do about 10 items for stockings, but mine have small stockings rather than a sack and then they’ll get 6-8 other presents from me

pilates · 22/12/2020 07:29

Sounds perfectly fine to me

katienana · 22/12/2020 07:33

There's no point comparing, its what you yourself are comfortable with. The main thing is she has nice presents, gets the excitement of them magically appearing and you enjoy giving them. Some will give less, some more. It's your dd so who cares what anyone else thinks! My boys have stockings with more items but they are physically smaller. Then they have more stuff downstairs.
When I was a kid we had my mums old tights!!! They were stretchy to fit everything in Grin

MynephewR · 22/12/2020 07:35

Doesn't seem too much to me, seems about right. Looking at my list, my DD has 17 things in her stocking but that is including things like a pencil sharpener, a lolly, chocolate coins etc. She has a small stocking though not a sack so all the things in it are small. She then has far too many bigger gifts that will go under the tree, either from us or from Santa depending on how much they cost, Santa gets the cheap stuff Grin

Cluckycluck · 22/12/2020 07:37

Sounds great.

I have the exact same memories of my stocking being full to bursting. My mum always went overboard (and now goes overboard for my DD).

I do fill DD's stocking but a lot of her stocking is practical things (knickers, hairbands, toothbrush etc) whereas growing up mine was filled with chocolate and tat.

Morechocmorechoc · 22/12/2020 07:41

I've got lots of tat for mine! Things like those paper planes and Christmas stamps and of course the coins. However father Christmas also delivers the main present here as thats what got written in the letter!

Brandaris · 22/12/2020 07:42

Well I’m the kind of meanie who puts toothbrushes in the stockings (fancy ones!Grin) and we use an actual walking sock with an orange in the toe. So I think you set the bar far too high by having a sack to fill. But what you’ve got isn’t that dissimilar to what dd will get (mini colouring book, small toys/games and usually a soft toy at the top.)

But dd then gets lots of much more impressive presents from us rather than Father Christmas. So it all evens out.

ShinyGreenElephant · 22/12/2020 07:46

That sounds lovely! We have fairly small stockings as there's 4 kids and they also get a 'main' present off santa and bits from us too. This year in the 5yo stocking there is:
Dinosaur colouring set
Dinosaur water bottle
Squeezy dino egg
Dino Christmas fluffy socks
Dino stickers
A kaleidoscope
Chocolate coins
Silly Christmas glasses
New toothbrush
Wind up Christmas character (they all get one and have a race)

Then he also has a giant dinosaur contraption from Santa and 6 decent size presents from us which are all without exception big and plastic and either noisy or lego 😩 luckily he always wants to take all his new toys back to his mums so we will just choose one to keep here and send the rest back to annoy her instead!

NotYourHolidayDick · 22/12/2020 07:50

Oh god.
I started wrapping last night for my 3 kids.

They each have between 18-23 in their stockings and 18 each under the tree.

I kept forgetting what I'd bought, and buying more 😂

2020 can go to hell though, so I don't care.

You're list sounds great OP

NotYourHolidayDick · 22/12/2020 07:50

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 22/12/2020 07:54

My DDs have... 22 items in their stockings this year. But mostly they are tiny, or cheap. It includes stationery, toiletries, hair stuff. A craft kit that cost 79p. The Christmas Scout badge. A book and small teddy. Food items like nuts and a chocolate Santa.
Besides that they have one large present, 3smaller presents and a joint present.

AnnaSW1 · 22/12/2020 07:54

Sounds standard. Just do your own thing Smile

Hophop26 · 22/12/2020 08:02

Sounds a good balance OP and not what I think as over the top at all. Mine have about 20 things in their stockings, some are very small (box of character plasters!) and others are a bit more substantive. I usually then go with no more than 10 tree presents each (including crafts / books etc) but this year it’s closer to 15 which I am not overly comfortable with and planing on scaling it back a bit whilst doing the wrapping.... but then one side do the family have not done presents at all this year and with the crappiness of covid etc I may just let them have all of them but spread it out over the next week or so!

Scanner20 · 22/12/2020 08:33

My dd stocking

Instaglam make up doll
Smiggle stacker pen
Smiggle gel pens
Smiggle baby key chain x2
Frozen snap cards
Little live pet hedgehog
Squashie
Lego friends puppy playground
Choc coins
Pet sweets and a Christmas dispensers
Smarties tube

RainingBatsAndFrogs · 22/12/2020 08:33

Brilliant list of presents OP.

If you want to bulk out the sack- thing are you near a Tesco that had an American shelf? A box of disgusting American cereal or a bag of giant marshmallows take up a lot of space. Or head for the Home department and get a cheap cushion with a kitten on it.

Or.... use a pillowcase like your Mum did Smile

Scanner20 · 22/12/2020 08:34

Oh and a mini bath bomb set and a couple of toothbrushes
