Come and talk to me about Nepresso machines - going to get DH one?

DH the man who doesn’t really want anything? He loves his coffee spends far too much in Costa/Starbucks and I thought it would be nice as he’s WFH and also DD2 likes coffee too.

So I don’t have a clue about them as I hate the stuff. He usually drinks white coffee doesn’t like cappuccino or any fancy flavours. Budget under £200

We have one and use Starbucks pods.

They are shit for the environment though:

You can get reusable pods - bit more of a faff but cheaper as well.

Pretty sure all the machines are the same just choose one you like.

Got me through lockdown!

middleager · 12/12/2020 23:38

I love mine. Lots of companies do cheaper compatible pods (Aldi, Lidl, B&M etc) but my favourites are the L'Or ones which I bulk buy.

Pp is right though, they are terrible for the environment though you can recycle official Nespresso ones at Costa I believe.

WeAllHaveWings · 12/12/2020 23:51

I got dh one a couple of years ago, it's in the back of the cupboard now. He likes a big mug of coffee and had to use 2 pods for a decent sized strong cup.

Comefromaway · 12/12/2020 23:57

I’ve just bought dh one from Lakeland which does both nespresso & dolce gusto.

Does he want one with a milk frother?

If your DH is like the above poster, then you need to get the Vertuo machine. It is the only one that has the option for a 'mug' sized coffee
didireallysaythat · 13/12/2020 00:22

I've had one for 10 years. Love it. I know the pods aren't good re recycling but I order them directly from Nespresso and they pick up the bag of used ones at the same time which I do hope they recycle in some way .. agree that the volume is a lot smaller than a coffee shop cup though....

chipsandgin · 13/12/2020 00:27

I love mine! I think I save around £20 a week as I no longer buy coffee shop coffees on the way to work (& since WFH has been amazing!). Nespresso do a machine with a frother for £1 if you sign up for a year of x amount of code pod capsules a month. We’ve done that & it’s great.

I’d be spending a lot more on other coffees anyway & I have either an iced coffee or a latte every morning, plus if I do head into the office I make myself a takeaway one. Definitely one of the few kitchen purchases I love (& I say that as someone with a cupboard full of George Foreman grills, sandwich makers, slow cookers all gathering dust!)

(not someone who works for them btw, just love the fact that I’ve saved at least £500 a year by switching, plus £1 outlay now & the rest over the rest of the year is a winner!)

I don’t buy anything from Nestle, and those pods are terrible for the environment, so I wouldn’t recommend a Nespresso.

These are very good if your budget can stretch to it? De'Longhi Magnifica, Automatic Bean to Cup Coffee Machine, Espresso, Cappuccino, ESAM 4200.S, Silver www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B001EOMZ5E/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_fabc_Cgw1FbXKYTCVZ?psc=1&_encoding=UTF8&tag=mumsnetforu03-21

sweetkitty · 13/12/2020 00:39

Thanks it’s a surprise so I don’t think he want a milk frother he’s a very no nonsense man lol

Bummer about the environment though glad there’s some kind of recycling option.

If he just likes white coffee you might be better off with a filter coffee machine. Nespresso makes espresso, which is great if that's your coffee of choice or if you like latte or cappuccino and get a frother to go with it. But probably not the best if you like a full mug of Americano strength coffee. We've just switched from a Nespresso to a filter machine because it just makes a pot of nice coffee and keeps it warm for 30 minutes so you can come back for a refill. Also much cheaper than pods and better for the environment too.

Llyn · 13/12/2020 00:44

Really though, I think a stove top pot and good quality freshly ground beans is the best way to make coffee at home. I appreciate it doesn't have the same novelty excitement for a present, but if you can be tempted away from pods, the yellow caturra from here is amazing: www.thecolombiancoffeeco.org/

Quarterback11 · 13/12/2020 00:46

A filter coffee machine or if you can increase the budget, a De'Longhi bean to cup machine.

Frenchdressing · 13/12/2020 00:48

There are some great coffee makers that don’t use pods.

Butterfly44 · 13/12/2020 00:50

Krups nespresso machine

QueenOfTheDoubleWide · 13/12/2020 00:54

We had a Nespresso machine for years and loved it but our only complaint was it didn't do BIG coffees and we only used the milk frother for visitors. We then stayed in a hotel which had, what was then, a new machine that used bigger capsules and made a wider range of cup sizes so we upgraded our machine to the Vertuo which makes everything from an espresso up to a 230ml mug (using different capsules obviously)
We have always recycled our capsules. We order the recycling bags when we order coffee and, when it is full, print out a return label from their site and take it to the local shop for return
I highly recommend the Vertuo

justilou1 · 13/12/2020 04:28

I am thinking about getting one and one of these as well, as I am not keen on the nespresso coffee or the impact on the environment. (Or the nanoparticles of plastic in my body). This way I get to choose my own coffee (I’m fussy af).

There are lots of different sorts of refillable nespresso pods available, btw. You just have to get the ones that fit your machine. In the long run I think it will save you a hell of a lot of money, too.

rottiemum88 · 13/12/2020 04:44

DH has had a De Longhi bean to cup machine for the past few years, but it's very loud and a bit of a pain to clean/maintain, so I've ordered him a Nespresso machine for Christmas.

I've gone with the Vertuo Next Premium, which I think was £179, but came with 100 free capsules. Mainly chose it because it can do the full range of cup sizes.., plus it looked the prettiest Grin

Malin52 · 13/12/2020 05:12

If you recycle the pods and use aluminium ones the pods aren't terrible for the environment.

Two coffees a day uses as much aluminium in a month as two tins of tomatoes.
Just don't use plastic pods.

Eminybob · 13/12/2020 05:22

I have bought DH a filter coffee machine for Xmas as he’s the same, drinks endless cups of coffee, but just likes plain with milk. Bot into lattes etc.

I looked at capsule machines and normal espresso machines but for what dh likes to drink they weren’t right.

I went for a Morphy Richards one that has a reusable filter so no paper filters therefore less waste.

davekim · 13/12/2020 08:11

Please don't support the pod industry. They are awful for the environment

Housewife2010 · 13/12/2020 08:16

Those capsule machines always seem so wasteful and restrictive. We have an excellent Gaggia coffee machine and can use any brand of coffee and grind our beans ourself if we like.

Malin52 · 13/12/2020 08:16

@davekim no they aren't. Unless you also see the tinned tomato industry as awful for the environment.

Mistigri · 13/12/2020 08:59

We have a Senseo which uses the round coffee bags rather than pods. My DH prefers a longer, less strong coffee so he uses a single bag and the double-cup button to get a full mug of filter-type coffee without the hassle of actually making filter coffee.

It's not the coffee connaisseurs option but it makes reasonable decent coffee that is IMO somewhere between a filter coffee and a proper espresso. The coffee bags are much cheaper than Nespresso capsules. It's also pretty indestructible - we have had ours for about 4-5 years and it's still going strong despite heavy use. I occasionally toy with the idea of a nespresso or similar as I personally think the coffee is nicer but the cost and environmental impact put me off.

Franticbutterfly · 13/12/2020 09:03

Ive had a Nespresso for years and really like them. I think next time I'll get the one for the larger pods though. Also the Starbucks capsules are nasty, stick to the actual Nespresso ones which are really lovely.
