Challenge-impossible to buy for DM

workworkworkugh · 04/12/2020 21:21

I've just been reading another thread about what to buy for your parents and I have this challenge every single year (birthdays, Christmas, Mother's Day etc) my parents are literally impossible to buy for, so I'm putting it to the good people of MN to come up with at least one idea!

My DM: has no hobbies, she is not an avid cook, does not exercise, doesn't read or watch movies (she will if something is on tv though), does not like going to the cinema/theatre/live music etc, is not into fashion or beauty, is not into home decorating, does not wear jewellery, they do not go away on holidays, they do not eat out often and are not into gourmet type foods, she does not drink alcohol.

My DDad I could get away with buying some beer or a scratch card gift pack.

I'm sure I've missed out some things, but I challenge you to find something that I could buy my DMum!

My mum sounds similar on lack of hobbies / travel / not an avid cook and she appreciated a subscription to Landscape Magazine.

ChaToilLeam · 04/12/2020 21:41

My DM is similar so watching for inspiration!

Taswama · 04/12/2020 21:42

Does she read?

Taswama · 04/12/2020 21:43

Sorry, just seen you said not.

Isadora2007 · 04/12/2020 21:44

Ask her?

HollowTalk · 04/12/2020 21:44

What was the last present she got that she actually liked?

What would she buy herself if she had some spare money?

elsielegallez · 04/12/2020 21:47

Rose for the garden?

Citrus/olive/other tree in a pot?

mnahmnah · 04/12/2020 21:55

A Bloom & Wild subscription, so she always has some nice fresh flowers in the house?

Onekidnoclue · 04/12/2020 21:55

I love a gifting challenge!
Very random ideas to follow:
Pyjamas
Subscription to an excercise class or session with a personal trainer
Donation to a cause she’s passionate about - eg paying for a girl to go to school for a year if she’s into women’s education.
Subscription to Masterclass so she can pick things to learn about.
Subscription to Readly so she can read any magazine.
Kindle
Socks (cashmere)
Huge Lego thing to build
A bird feeder you stick to the outside of the window.
Wildlife camera for the garden
Water bottle.
Book on her local area/town
A kitten
Recreate a photo of you as a child that she loves.

I always find it difficult to buy for my DM who is 84. She lives in a sheltered accommodation 2nd floor flat so anything ‘gardeny’ is out. The flat is very warm so flowers and plants are out. She’s beginning to struggle with her eyesight so I can’t buy her reading materials.
In November we got her a smart tv and Netflix (not for Christmas) and she’s been thrilled with that (she’d only had terrestrial tv previously).
In the past I’ve got her:
Pyjamas, Dressing Gown, Slippers, Perfume, Scarf, Gloves, DVD’s, Photobook, Boots Gift Card etc. I know they’re pretty mundane but there’s isn’t really anything she wants/needs/is interested in.
This year I’ve got her an Estée Lauder moisturiser gift set - it’s lovely and I hope she’ll like it.

workworkworkugh · 04/12/2020 22:49

Thanks for the suggestions so far, I should add she doesn't garden and is not interested in any classes etc.
It sounds like I'm making this up purely to be difficult, but I'm truly not!

I think she liked a photo of the grandkids one year, but that's all I can remember.
She had a bad facial once in the 80's so refuses to get one again and my brother once bought her a massage voucher that went unused.
I've given store vouchers before but then she's complained that she can't find anything she likes to spend it on and she doesn't shop online.

Also, she is not quite 60 years old, so still young.
The pyjamas might be a good idea.

I’m 61 - some of the things I’ve received/bought myself that I’ve particularly enjoyed:

iPad
Wireless headphones
Wireless earbuds (for holidays)
A Switch (my absolute favourite thing)
An Oodie
Photo albums (I’m currently printing all the photos off my IPhone)
An ancestry.co.uk subscription
A Wentworth wooden jigsaw

I think I might like an ancestry DNA test - I’m still debating that one.

TwigTheWonderKid · 04/12/2020 23:39

That's an awfully long list of things she doesn't like or do but what does she like? How does she occupy herself?

workworkworkugh · 05/12/2020 00:25

@TwigTheWonderKid she works part time as a cleaner, she often has family visit her when passing through town, her and dad both like to play the poker machines and that's about it, as far as I know.

She does sometimes get into the family tree stuff so maybe an Ancestry.com thing could be an idea.

I should add, I ask her to come for walks with me, or go to the movies or try new experiences with me but she always turns me down.

What about a more recent photo of the grandkids printed on really nice paper and professionally framed?

Anordinarymum · 05/12/2020 00:35

What about a nice new handbag ? We all like a handbag don't we?

MaverickDanger · 05/12/2020 08:10

I was going to suggest an Ancestry DNA kit - that and a subscription would fit the bill.

Sawyersfishbiscuits · 05/12/2020 08:48

A photo calendar of the kids/family from somewhere like snapfish?

Afternoon tea voucher

A hamper with smellies and/or food

A trip to somewhere from their childhood.

Sawyersfishbiscuits · 05/12/2020 08:49

One of those Facebook portal things or Amazon version so they can video chat you and family

princessbear80 · 05/12/2020 08:56

A nice lamp or ornament?

HappydaysArehere · 05/12/2020 09:04

She needs an iPad. Defo.

Littlemissnutcracker · 05/12/2020 09:08

I'm giving mine cash. She really has all she needs.

MendingWalls · 05/12/2020 09:11

Does she like music? - a Spotify subscription.
Alexa.

MendingWalls · 05/12/2020 09:18

I know this is a bit of a leap but if she (and DF) like to play poker machines what about a poker set - a case containing cards, casino chips etc?
