Gift box suggestions - for parents who like walking

I'm putting a gift box together for my parents who have really got into walking. So far I've got a couple of guidebooks, walking socks, travel mugs, and some radox bubble bath! What else could I pop in?! Would so appreciate some suggestions!

Hand warmers! My parents enjoy walking, but the older they’ve got, the more they feel the cold. They wear gloves, but something like these are a treat too.

An all purpose penknife

Kendal mint cake.
Essential for with your mid walk brew

RomaineCalm · 03/12/2020 22:49

Hand warmers are a good idea.

Also, buffs, waterproof map cover, GPS tracker, thermal under layers, voucher for a local pub/coffee shop if they walk the same routes regularly, kendal mint cake bars, blister plasters...

Takingabreakagain · 03/12/2020 22:49

Do they also like puzzles? The ordnance survey do puzzle books based on their maps which are good.

Hats

  • Gel shoe insoles
  • Ankle gaiters
  • Food Thermos, which has a larger mouth than the regular soup type ones
  • Depending where they are walking, distance, ability, style etc etc, walking poles?
  • Local foraging guide

Proper Nordic socks. Not fake acrylic ones, real wool socks.
New pokey sticks as my Dh calls them, I call them walking poles.

SallySaidHi · 03/12/2020 23:21

I'm a walker, late 50s, and I'd appreciate: walking poles, walking socks, thermal insoles, touch screen gloves, 'Graze' type protein snacks, woolly hat, plasters, small secateurs for cutting back overgrown brambles etc. Personally I can't abide Kendal mint cake - it's pure sugar.

SallySaidHi · 03/12/2020 23:33

Oh, and a small tube of handcream (just thinking about what I have in my walking bag 🤔

Cluelessgift · 04/12/2020 02:06

This is a lovely gift!
Some nice gloves
Hand warmers
Hand and foot cream
Depending how up to date with tech they are you could get a simple pedometer
A compass
Water bottles
A torch
A couple of treats they could take on their next walk.
A mini first aid kit - some antibac wipes, plasters that sort of thing
Powerbank for their phones
A boot buddy
A mini foam roller for the feet
Could you get a framed print of anywhere they particularly like to go or is special to them
Budget depending, You could put the gifts inside something useful like a handy back pack, or a personalised boot bag.

I would add an emergency foil blanket - they are pretty small in their package. I always pack mine if I’m going somewhere more remote.

HeronLanyon · 04/12/2020 06:54

If they walk out of mobile range and anyway just cos they are fun how about some walkie talkies ? My dp and I sometimes take them on walks and purposely walk ahead etc just to have some silly fun - kind of star sky and hutch/spy type nonsense??? We are not but it’s good to feel about 7 sometimes again.

HeronLanyon · 04/12/2020 06:55

‘Not young’ that should read but to be fair nor are we starsky and hutch/spies.

FippertyGibbett · 04/12/2020 06:56

A whistle for if they get lost and an emergency foil blanket.

HeronLanyon · 04/12/2020 07:02

And bandanas - I walk a lot and am never without large cotton bandana.
Have used as -
Towel to dry feet after paddling in river/beach.
Bandage
Bag to tie things collected in - shells etc.
Head scarf
Sun shade on shoulders
Towel to dry sitting spot to mop brow to wash hands or dry fruit
To wave at distant dp on far hill
To wrap something to protect it in bag
In place of bungee to tie jacket etc to backpack. Etc
After water binoculars and small toiletry bag my bandidoodah is the next thing in bag.

ExpensivelyDecorated · 04/12/2020 07:16

Yes to buffs, decent touch screen gloves, cereal bars (I can't abide Kendall mint cake either). No to anything made of wool for me. Many of the other things mentioned you'd need to check whether they've already got them - they may well already have the foil blanket, mini first aid kit, phone battery, map cover etc.

profpoopsnagle · 04/12/2020 07:34

A book called The Walker's year by David Bathurst, it's a lovely almanac.

A folding sit mat, so nice to have somewhere warm and dry to perch your bottom.

An OS maps subscription, although if you get the country walking magazine there's usually an offer code in that.
