What do you consider to be the main present?

Dp thinks it's the highest value item.
I think it's the item the child wants the most.

Who do you agree with?

Who cares?

HerbErtlinger · 30/11/2020 08:08

The thing they most want. DS3 wants a shop, I got it on offer for £25, he will go mad for it but its not the most expensive thing I've bought

Angel2702 · 30/11/2020 08:09

Either depending on age.

BefuddledPerson · 30/11/2020 08:11

We've never thought about a main present!

missyB1 · 30/11/2020 08:12

They all go in ds sack so it really doesn’t matter in our house. To ds presents are just presents.

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 30/11/2020 08:21

Varies each year. But we only buy 3or4 things (big family) and more often than not the presents from grandparents are bigger/more expensive.

The thing they are most excited about can be something small and inexpensive sometimes.

SpamIAm · 30/11/2020 09:18

I think it's a bit of both, and for younger kids I think size comes into it as well.

GameSetMatch · 30/11/2020 09:32

I agree with your husband, the most expensive. Last year I bought my then five year old a cheap transforming type plane it was very cheap and just a last minute pick up gift, but he loved it the most and was one of the cheaper gifts he definitely thought that was his main gift! Children and adults have different ideas,it doesn’t matter what the main gift is in the long run.

lazylinguist · 30/11/2020 09:44

Probably the most expensive. But I can't think of an example of when we've bought more than one present and when a less expensive one has been a thing that the dc particularly wanted above other things tbh. Sometimes we buy things the dc haven't specifically said they wanted. Usually the more expensive present will be something they wanted, and the less expensive things are just extras.

Thatwentbadly · 30/11/2020 10:02

I have young children so I think it tends to size or the item they will play with most. So far for my children that has been the same thing.

Spacerader · 30/11/2020 11:47

For me its always been the most expensive gift.

Spacerader · 30/11/2020 11:48

most if the time the most expensive gift is also what they want the most

IthinkIsawahairbrushbackthere · 30/11/2020 11:52

I think it's the one the child remembers. Many years ago when DS was 5 he gave his friend a toy mobile phone (nearly 30 years ago). Friend's mother said it was the best present he had. Whenever he was asked what he had had for Christmas it was the phone from his friend!

PinkJam · 30/11/2020 12:03

The item that the child wants the most.

youngestisapsycho · 30/11/2020 12:06

By main present, do you mean you give them it first to unwrap?
We just put all presents in the sacks and the open as they get them out.

CloudyVanilla · 30/11/2020 12:07

I'm another who thinks it depends on variables. At younger ages I'd say it's the thing they want most, as they get older and more aware there is usually a stronger correlation between most expensive and main present.

My DC don't have a main present as such this year, as in I didn't shop with a main present in mind due to my obsession with making the stockings good. But I have a good idea what they will consider their "main" present - Minecraft metal figure set of 20 for DS age 3 and two My Little Pony sets for DD.

My goal was just to have a couple of larger presents under the tree and a great stocking. As they get older my goal will probably be to get them their main present and a few other bits to open

Sober4Summer20 · 30/11/2020 12:07

I tend to think the main one is the one they've asked Santa for. This year they both want a fish tank with accessories. We've said santa can't bring live animals but if he thinks they've been good enough and delivers the tanks then we'll take them to get a couple of fish each after Christmas. They are going to be so excited on Christmas morning. I cant wait to see their little faces xx

CloudyVanilla · 30/11/2020 12:10

And further to my post even though I think they will consider those their main presents it's definitely not the case the child will agree! One year as a child I got a polaroid camera as a little side present and it was one of my favourite presents I've ever received to this day!

ChanklyBore · 30/11/2020 12:13

As them what they got for Christmas. Their answer is the main present.

MrJinxyCat · 30/11/2020 13:04

We have Santa gifts and stocking and then we have gifts we’ve bought for them under the tree.
Some years we buy a joint gift, other years we buy them a big gift each.

Some years what they’ve asked Santa for has definitely been their main favourite gift, other years I’ve had an idea they haven’t thought of and they would probably say that’s their favourite gift.
I admit I do try to make the gift they not expecting a wow gift, not necessarily more expensive, just a gift I know how much they’ll love and be surprised to receive.

Stompythedinosaur · 30/11/2020 13:23

I think it is the gift with the most wow-factor, which is often the most expensive, but doesn't have to be. If the dc's most wanted gift was a small item I probably wouldn't think of it as the main gift.

nocutsnobuttsnococonuts · 30/11/2020 14:10

In my mind it is the WOW gift. So whether thats most expensive or one they have asked for and is desperate for. Its the gift I save and can't wait to see them open as they will be so happy!

For dd1 this year will be a particular rare FNAF figure she has seen and won't be expecting. Cost me £15 and she will have more expensive things in her pile, but for her this will be the wow factor!

Dd2 is the most expensive gift, its an lol set she has wanted for over a year and I've told her was too much. Finally found it at a reduced price.

Cherryrainbow · 30/11/2020 16:12

My idea of a main present: the massive thing my son suggests he wants the most in all the world! that I have to go shopping for and emerge from the 15th shop victorious, but only after a blood sacrifice, a gladiatorial battle with mothers and some Latin chanting (ok a lot of swearing).

Sons idea of a main present: wow look at this cheap £1 stocking filler from poundland, its almost better than a cardboard box.

ChalkDinosaur · 30/11/2020 16:19

Depends on the implications of 'main present' and if the kid is old enough to understand what things cost.

BestUsernameEverMade · 30/11/2020 16:25

@Sertchgi123

Who cares?
Obviously not you 😂
