The ridiculous things we do in the name of Christmas...

Today I made a 100+ mile round trip to collect a cushion for ds1 Blush
The colour I wanted wasn't available in my local store so I drove for over 3hrs to get the right one as delivery wasn't available.
He hasn't asked for it but I know he'll love it and I couldn't forget about it once I'd seen it.
Ridiculous I know but it is in the name of Christmas. Anyone else as daft as me? Confused

Thatwentbadly · 27/11/2020 18:48

Nope. Sorry @Trudee.

HollyandIvyandallthingsYule · 27/11/2020 18:49

It’s a no from me as well, sorry!

But it’s sweet that you cared enough about getting him the perfect cushion to do that! Xmas Smile

namechangeforfriday · 27/11/2020 18:50

Nope, have never and would never do anything like this. I have a tiny family though and we don’t bother with gifts.

Lollee · 27/11/2020 19:27

No, to be blunt.

MrsHuntGeneNotJeremyObviously · 27/11/2020 19:33

I would do it too OP, so you are not alone Smile

PinkJam · 27/11/2020 19:34

That’s exactly something I would do! And it will be worth it when he opens his present Smile

jambeforeclottedcream · 27/11/2020 19:35

I've not done anything quite like that. But if I had to I would do the exactly the same as you op

GalesThisMorning · 27/11/2020 19:37

Yikes no way. Not in a million years
That's picking up someone from the airport levels of driving, not here's a cushion I bought levels of driving!!

Friedbanana · 27/11/2020 19:39

This is very sweet, I hope he loves the cushion and you have a lovely Christmas!! I felt like a mug last Thursday waking up every hour in the middle of night to check ps5 stock and then managing to order one at 6am, but thinking that it didn’t go through, then spending the following 8 hours on my day off obsessively checking for stock before realising that, actually, i had managed to order one! It’s for partner and he’s not expecting one, he said he would just buy it when it comes a bit down in price next year..! but hopefully he’ll be happy.. I can’t imagine the lengths I’ll go to when I have kids!

myhobbyisouting · 27/11/2020 19:40

No....I hope he loves it though!!

Gingerkittykat · 27/11/2020 19:44

My niece's grandad drove from Edinburgh to Newcastle to queue outside ToysRus to get a tellytubby which were then impossible to get anywhere else, obviously this is around 20 years ago.

Thecomfortador · 27/11/2020 19:45

I've drawn the line at that kind of dedication, but earlier in the year considered driving across the country to pick up a big yellow teapot for my 2 year old. Thankfully I slept on it and I realised how ridiculous it was. But good on you for making that extra level of magic.

HollyandIvyandallthingsYule · 27/11/2020 19:46

I’m going to set my alarm for 5.45AM tomorrow, as that’s when slots for orders from a retailer I need things from will re-open.

That’s pretty crazy for me.

Gotobloodysleep · 27/11/2020 19:53

I drove over an hour away to get a Mobil space rocket that my, then toddler, was adamant he wanted a few days before Christmas and had sold out anywhere closer. My husband told me I was mad for doing it and that said child didn't really want it. He was right and the little bugger barely played with it. Won't be doing that again in a hurry. And it is now used as a remember when you did that story.

2anddone · 27/11/2020 19:56

I am waiting for shops to reopen so I can drive an hour for a £6.99 toy that I can't get delivered as there are a few different versions of that toy and you can't specify what one you receive!! Dd is 12 and I am happy to do it because I am happy she has still asked for a toy!!

OverTheRainbow88 · 27/11/2020 19:59

Sounds like totally essential travel

MrsHuntGeneNotJeremyObviously · 27/11/2020 20:01

I remember years ago when my brother and sister (twins) were tiny, sending my then boyfriend to every shop in Cardiff to hunt down two furbys. It was the year when they were the toy and hard to get. We got two and they were so happy!

PegLegAntoine · 27/11/2020 20:02

I guess a lot of people do that sort of thing for the must have toy like Kevin the carrot!

Catchytune · 27/11/2020 20:04

Very outing!

Every year I drive up to Scotland to stay near my parents for a week. DS comes with me and DH and DIL drive up separately. We live on the South coast.
Last year we went up on the 22nd and I got as far as Carlisle when I realised I had left all DS presents at home.
We did the final 2 hours to the stunning rental house and in the morning I drove back down south to get them. Stayed the night at mine (the peace was fabulous) and drove back up Christmas Eve.
It all felt quite Christmassy in actual fact but the cost of petrol rather offset the stealthy bargains I had managed to get.

itsgettingweird · 27/11/2020 20:04

I haven't done it but I would if necessary to get the perfect thing.

But I'm someone who buys ds stuff at Christmas, a small birthday gift and not really anything throughout the year.

Catchytune · 27/11/2020 20:08

Sorry, should have been DSD not DIL.

And can I add I know it’s unenvironmental but it’s was a one off. DH car is very ecologically friendly too.

Whatwouldnanado · 27/11/2020 20:12

Helped lovely staff in a local shop go through Easter stuff in an attic store room after DD 3 decided all she wanted for Christmas was a pink rabbit soft toy. On Christmas Eve. Her face when she saw it sticking out of her stocking was a picture!

MummytoCSJH · 27/11/2020 20:19

I haven't this year as I've been lucky enough to get everything I needed but I have in the past and would again! DS never asks for anything expensive or very specific so if I see something and get a gut feeling he would love it.. he's getting it! Not essential travel... ODFOD 🙄 travelling in the car and going into 1 shop 100 miles away is no different in regards to covid risk than travelling in the car and going into 1 shop 5 mins away.

SpnBaby1967 · 27/11/2020 20:24

I haven't and probably wouldnt. But I do remember the year the Tracey Island from Thunder Birds came out, my brother was obsessed. At the time my Dad had a business that worked nationwide so he had all his staff looking for it on their travels. Eventually one guy found one in Scotland (we're in East Anglia) and he bought it and drove it all the way down to us on xmas eve. I'll never forget my brothers face when he opened that up xmas morning Grin

Pechanga · 27/11/2020 20:27

I've done some daft shit for Christmas but on reflection it's usually for myself (wanting perfection) and doesn't mean nearly as much to the recipient
