Stocking fillers for my mum?

FurrySlipperBoots · 25/11/2020 22:56

Please help! I'm stuck for ideas! I do a stocking for my mum (now 66) every year, and it's always so unoriginal! Every year it contains:

Scented candles
Fancy Christmassy tissues
A Cadbury Fudge bar and a Freddo
A Christmas scratchcard
A traditional German Christmas tree dec
A foreign film on DVD
A notebook
A nice teatowel
And usually gloves, but she has enough pairs now!

I can't think of anything new! I would love to add one or 2 surprises. She is basically impossible to buy for though!

She doesn't wear makeup or have any interest in perfume or nail varnish etc
My dad buys her fancy soap and shower gel
She doesn't wear socks
She isn't into eating or edible treats at all
My dad buys her books
She never listens to music
She's serious minded, wouldn't like a toy or game
She doesn't need a diary or address book

Her only interests beside foreign films and literature is travel (when there aren't pandemics all over the place) and her Border Collie, and taking her on walks. She buys stuff for the dog herself so wouldn't be thrilled with dog treats or toys.

Previously she loved the mini torch I bought her for dog walking on winter evenings, and uses it all the time.

She's made it clear she wants no hand gel dispensers or fancy face masks!

Any ideas? She is totally impossible!

Hand cream? My mum isn’t remotely into beauty stuff but she uses it a lot, particularly with all the hand washing!

Mine has a cool snowglobe from John Lewis, Christmassy chocs, a personalised make up bag that says grandma, and some novelty pencils that look like pens

dillydallydollydaydream7 · 25/11/2020 23:02

Is she a hot drinks person? Mug with the border collie on maybe?

Brain teaser book? I've just got my auntie the Bletchley Park one from Amazon

lifestooshort123 · 25/11/2020 23:08

Would she wear the beanie hat with an attached light that seems to be advertised everywhere (for dog walking)?

RiaOverTheRainbow · 25/11/2020 23:09

Nice pen/watch/earrings/bag? A subscription to a magazine/monthly box of something? Woolly hat? Keyring multitool?

Tbh I think if you won't give at least general suggestions for presents you can't complain if what you get is nice-but-generic.

DelphiniumBlue · 25/11/2020 23:12

A journal, for her travels?
I'm interested to know how she walks her dog on winter evenings without socks? But maybe something warm for dog walks - something from Turtle Doves, or a hat or headband? heated handwarmer for her pocket?
She might enjoy a book, Daunts have a section IRL of novels based in specific places, maybe you can find one set somewhere she enjoyed visiting, or plans to visit.
Everybody likes a new pen, an upgrade of an everyday biro..we all have our favourites, a uniball or similar, I love these www.ryman.co.uk/pentel-energel-xm-retractable-0-7mm

Have you got a photo of the dog you could get printed out and put in a nice frame?

grannyjacob · 25/11/2020 23:18

Do you give her a bigger/more expensive gift as well? If not, then how about jewellery, a magazine subscription (e.g. Lonely Planet), a silk scarf. A "charity" gift from e.g. Oxfam, you get lots of choice nowadays, you may even find a dog related one. I'm the same age as your Mum, one of the nicest gifts my adult daughter ever gave me was a 3 month subscription to Bloom & Wild. Each month's flowers were gorgeous and lasted much longer than a month so I still had a full vase weeks after the end of the third month.

Iminaglasscaseofemotion · 25/11/2020 23:22

Does she like puzzles like sudoku or crosswords?

What about special tea or coffee and a mug if she drinks hot drinks.

Maybe a photo frame with a nice family photo inside, or a photo of someone special to her. I didn't that one year for my parents with a picture of me as a baby with their parents. They loved that.

Iminaglasscaseofemotion · 25/11/2020 23:24

Slippers, dressing gown, pjs

www.theliterarygiftcompany.com/

This is an excellent site for book lovers. Lots of stocking filler ideas.

JamieLeeCurtains · 25/11/2020 23:42

I'm (used to) do a lot of travelling and I love maps. Modern maps, historic maps, geological maps ... Also Rough Guides, Blue Guides, pocket guides.

recklessgran · 25/11/2020 23:46

What about a book of countryside walks - you could get one for your area/county.

recklessgran · 25/11/2020 23:48

What about a dog treat recipe book and cutters to make her own dog treats - is that something she might like to do?

gavisconismyfriend · 25/11/2020 23:52

Notelets
Nice pen
Reed diffuser
Hand cream
Cashmere bed socks
Silk pillowcase
Mini photo book or key ring with family photos
Digital photo frame

Catflapkitkat · 26/11/2020 03:40

Lanyard. Cath Kitson do some nice ones
Wrist pouch
A speedometer, So she can check her distance/calorie usage when dog walking

AlizarinRed · 26/11/2020 04:14

A nice mug. I was going to put a link to a nice one from John Lewis which I was planning to buy and I see it's sold out!
Nice nail files?
Good tweezers.

LoveFall · 26/11/2020 05:33

A nice, rich lip balm to take along on dog walks.

sofiaaaaaa · 26/11/2020 05:40

I know you said she wouldn’t be impressed with dog related gifts, but M&S have some novelty items that are a bit different. Eg a light up dog collar or a dog step counter? I think she’d crack a smile at those!

sofiaaaaaa · 26/11/2020 05:42

Both are functional too so you never know, she might actually use them like the torch

sofiaaaaaa · 26/11/2020 05:46

Also try cookbooks, home decor items, cheeseboard or alcohol hamper etc

CrownAddict · 26/11/2020 07:46

Mini bottle of wine, miniature.brandy or.other spirit?

Skipsurvey · 26/11/2020 07:50

nice chutney
honey

Skipsurvey · 26/11/2020 07:51

A calender, you can put photos yourself

MatildaonaWaltzer · 26/11/2020 07:56

Smart games iq puzzler pro game - maybe serious minded enough for her but a small, brilliant game (I also recommend it highly for kids- good one to keep them quiet at a restaurant table)
