What to eat (alone)?

QueenPaws · 23/11/2020 19:38

I'm going to be alone for 5 days over Christmas and need to find something to eat, mostly for Christmas Day
I don't cook on Christmas Day Grin apart from possibly switching the oven on
So far I'm thinking one of those party snack selection things and making some nachos
Anything else good I should get? Using sainsburys to shop if it helps!

Ooh! Well, round here the nice restaurants are doing meals you can collect/are delivered and you just heat. There are also loads online, like Rick Stein, Haar, and other fancy chefs.

WouldBeGood · 23/11/2020 20:02

And supermarket party snacks on hand

QueenPaws · 23/11/2020 20:04

To add before anyone worries, I've been shielding alone since March and I'm quite happy to spend the day with shite films on Netflix, the cat, naps and a shit load of food Grin and no family bickering

I'll watch your decisions with interest, OP. I'm also solo for Christmas.

WeAreTheWeirdosMister · 23/11/2020 20:12

There's a chicken and dumpling ready meal from m&s that I like, roast-ish without the effort.

Defiantly41 · 23/11/2020 20:13

How about Cook? They have amazing meals and although it's technically cooking, it's shove a tray in the oven type.

I'm sure you'd get some help from Ollie with this www.cookfood.net/menu/christmas/christmas-day/christmas-lunch-bundles/christmas-chicken-dinner-for-2/

Otherwise, fancy party food, pigs in blankets ( I made our Christmas morning bacon rolls with added pigs in blankets last year, probably the best meal of the holiday), cheese, good bread and pate, some lovely tropical fruit like mango or papaya, a seafood platter?

You already have the most loving companion in the world

WouldBeGood · 23/11/2020 20:15

In fact, @QueenPaws I need to think about this- I have my DCs for Christmas but likely to have a good few days myself afterwards. Going to sort great food

AriesTheRam · 23/11/2020 20:15

If I was alone over Xmas it would be fizz, salmon bagels, fizz, posh nibbles, fizz,Indian food, wine, wine, wine, crisps, wine.

QueenPaws · 23/11/2020 20:17

@Defiantly41 Ollie has his paws crossed for jacket potato AND beans Grin

Half crispy duck with pancakes, cucumbers, spring onions. My favourite meal to have all to myself.

Shortsinwinter · 23/11/2020 20:23

Oh some good suggestions here. I would order a massive indian take away on Christmas eve and make my way through it over the next few days.

WouldBeGood · 23/11/2020 20:25

@HollyandIvyandallthingsYule that’s the Christmas dinner for me and DCs

ODFOx · 23/11/2020 20:28

By the third day, although I love rich food, I'd be going a bit bonkers. I call it the 27th December tomato craving.

If I'm still in treat myself mode I can work through the tomato craving with a jug of really spicy Bloody Mary. It doesn't even need much booze to be honest: it's the tomato, Lea and Perrins and celery combo that makes everything better.

Back onto rich treats: a defrosted lobster, whacked with the handle of the carving knife to crack the claws and then sliced in half, served with nice bread and a dollop of lemony mayo is hard to beat.

percheron67 · 23/11/2020 20:28

Your favourite things! I buy prepared Lobster Thermidor, smoked salmon and lots of salads and cheeses. Indulge.

QueenPaws · 23/11/2020 20:31

@ODFOx yes I plan to be back to usual food the day after Boxing Day! Will make sure I have salads and fruit etc in

another solo christmaser checking in. also with cat for company. i don’t drink, so am planning on eating my way through xmas day and boxing day.

i’ve ordered all the ingredients for a proper christmas dinner. they just might not all end up being eaten together. the best bit of xmas dinner is cold leftover roasties, batter puddings and pigs in blankets, so i might just cook up a big batch of all that the day before and graze on xmas day.

obviously cheese features highly, i’ve also found an alcohol free xmas pudding.

i’m a little bit sad about flying solo, but it’s just 2 days and i have also been shielding since March so it’s not exactly a stretch to be by myself.

and oh god it’s worth being on my own just to avoid family crap. it always ends badly, i’d rather not involve myself now i’m set up in my own little home.

Oysterbabe · 23/11/2020 20:32

Your Christmas sounds lovely OP. Sacking off the husband, kids and inlaws and being alone eating amazing food is the stuff of my fantasies Grin

goose1964 · 23/11/2020 20:33

I wouldn't cook ,I'd buy snacks and graze on those

QueenPaws · 23/11/2020 20:34

@Oysterbabe I also plan a long bath and a new book Grin plus all the TV I want to watch
I used to work every Christmas so I'm enjoying planning the time off

Thank you very much. I'm on my own this year too with the cat and baked casement sounds like the business. My very favourite dessert id the co op rice pudding. It must be co op. It is totally lush.

fucknuckle · 23/11/2020 20:40

seems there’s a few of us spending christmas with the cat!

Mustbethewine · 23/11/2020 20:41

Cheese, crackers, chutneys, pickles, nuts, pate are always my go too. I know you said no cooking but mabye cook a lump of ham for yourself and have it in sandwiches, with chips alongside cheese and crackers etc.

mineofuselessinformation · 23/11/2020 20:41

I'd have a mooch about on the Sainsbury's website.
If you like seafood, things like this are lovely for a treat - put the oven on, wait a while and enjoy!
www.sainsburys.co.uk/gol-ui/Product/sainsburys-smoked-haddock-chowder--taste-the-difference-240g
I'm not employed to promote them, but I do prefer their food to Tesco, for example.
You could also have smoked salmon blinis, a nice steak, or any desserts you like.
I'd go for bung it in the oven options.
Treat yourself!

QueenPaws · 23/11/2020 20:43

Oh that chowder looks lovely. I'm guaranteed slots with sainsburys which is why I want to shop with them really as they've been great
