When does Christmas begin and end in your house?

No judgement allowed! I’m just curious about how other people do it.

When does Christmas begin for you, and what does that mean? Is it decorations going up, or the nice food coming out? Is there a particular event, or does it just creep up?

Decorations usually go up last weekend in November/ first weekend in December and then come down on 29th religiously as DDs birthday is 30th.

Pickypolly · 20/11/2020 18:04

Decs go up 2nd week in December and come down on the 2nd or 3rd of Jan.

Even that is too long.
Humbug.

GinAtMerlottes · 20/11/2020 18:06

It’s a slow creep here, I couldn’t say when it begins as such. The cake is made, I’m occasionally playing Christmas music. Films and books are not until the 1st though and tree up probably 5/6. Presents, new decorations etc are finding there way into the house now.
It all ends on the 2nd though, when the tree comes down and we do a deep clean.

hernameis · 20/11/2020 18:06

Decor goes up last weekend in November (it's going up a week early this year though) and everything down on 27th Dec.

SeaKingdom · 20/11/2020 18:07

The beginning is a moveable feast, and quite gradual.I allow myself to start singing Christmas songs in the shower Grin on 1 December. I might start listening to Christmas songs around 7 December, and write my cards. The festive milestone of “stop eye rolling at other peoples decorations being up already” probably occurs around 10 December. Decs and tree go up around 18/19 December and that’s when true festivity can commence. Tree and decs come down on Twelfth Night. Festivity over.

TheProvincialLady · 20/11/2020 18:07

Up on 18th December and down on 6th January

MrsMoastyToasty · 20/11/2020 18:08

Decorations go up on the last weekend before Christmas and are taken down by 6th January at the very latest (but has been by boxing day as DH has his birthday between Christmas and the new year.

The festivities start on Christmas eve and finish on Boxing day. This time of year is the busiest for my DH as he works in warehousing for one of the largest food retailers in the UK.

LaurieFairyCake · 20/11/2020 18:08

This year, 19th December - 3rd January

Scanner20 · 20/11/2020 18:09

When we put the tree up and open the first tub of celebrations! We always open one to have whilst we decorate the house and stick the Christmas music on. This can be the first or second weekend in December depending on plans. This year it will be the last weekend in November so it's all up ready for the 1st December.

FuzzyPenguin · 20/11/2020 18:10

From 100 days we have a countdown calendar, decorations go up the nearest weekend to the first of December. I like to have everything back to normal when DS goes back to school.
Saving for Christmas starts in Jan, buying bits from August.

OverTheRainbow88 · 20/11/2020 18:10

Xmas music middle of nov
Xmas decorations beginning of dec
Xmas tree about the 15th
We don’t really get special food bar minced pies beginning of dec

All done and gone by about 5th jan

Beginning of December with advent calendars and decorations not long after. I normally have them down on New Year’s Day and that marks the end of it for us.

Scanner20 · 20/11/2020 18:12

And finishes New Year's Day but decs come down when we get a chance so this year 28th November - 2nd January

nancybotwinbloom · 20/11/2020 18:12

As soon as advent starts we put the tree up and take it down 31st.

Pipandmum · 20/11/2020 18:15

For me or has started - about the times the Christmas editions of the magazines cone out and I start thinking of a theme or how I'll decorate the table. But no decs up til first weekend in December and always down by the Jan 6th, though I'm pretty sick of them by Jan 1, so I'd say it's over in my mind by Dec 31.

flumposie · 20/11/2020 18:19

Tree up first weekend in December. Down 2nd January as daughter's birthday is 4th.

MilkTwoSugarsThanks · 20/11/2020 18:24

24th -26th December.

I grudgingly spend about 6 weeks prior to that trying to get people to at least give me a fucking CLUE as to what they want. Buy online and wrap as they arrive.

CloudyVanilla · 20/11/2020 18:25

I aim to get the decorations all up by the 1st December along with the advent calendars :)

Food for the last couple of years has begun on the 14th when my DD breaks up for pre school/school. Not full on treats but festive sandwhiches for lunch, a little festive treat with lunch, less healthy breakfasts which I'm usually quìte strict about, and we do break out a steadily increasing variety of treats, peaking on Xmas eve/day.

It then continues until Jan 2nd :)

LadyCatStark · 20/11/2020 18:28

1st Dec-1st Jan

reluctantbrit · 20/11/2020 18:34

Advent calendar 1st December

Some decoration at the first advent Sunday, that may be earlier or later depending on the calendar date, this year it is the 29th November.

Tree goes up on the 23rd.

Christmas food comes around the first advent Sunday as well, Stollen and Lebkuchen. We then also start baking more biscuits.

Music depends and I confess I started watching movies already, ironing is far too boring without,

cardswapping · 20/11/2020 18:36

Firsts Sunday of advent = start

A few days after Epiphany Day (6th Jan) = end (the wise men have to arrive to see Jesus, give the gifts, etc before going home!)

PurBal · 20/11/2020 18:37

Decorations go up the Saturday after Advent Sunday. DH birthday is just before Christmas so nothing else really happens until Christmas Eve afternoon which usually means copious amounts of mulled wine and mince pies before Midnight Mass, that's when it really feels like Christmas has started. Lots of celebrations until New Year then things ease off before Christmas ends on 6 January. Christmas is our busiest time of year at work, and this year is no different.

PurBal · 20/11/2020 18:39

I've considered leaving my nativity set out until candlemas but it's all a bit much for me by then.

TheFormerPorpentinaScamander · 20/11/2020 18:40

Tree goes up when schools break up, so weekend before Christmas roughly. Stays up until Epiphany.
Christmas starts on 24th and ends on epiphany.
Before that is advent.

Various Christmas meals may occur before then though. Christmas music is bearable from 1st Dec. Films are tricky. Depends what it is. I will happily watch The Polar Express all year Grin

Chosennonesneakymincepie · 20/11/2020 18:40

Advent calendars mark the start for us! For 6 or7 years we had the elf arrive then too 🙄 decs go the first w end of Dec and we have baileys/pop and a xmas buffet with a xmas film/special! When we break up we ramp up the films, xmas chocs/hot chocs and treats etc. Carry on like this until New Years day. Everything down and cleaned up on 2nd Jan.
