No judgement allowed! I’m just curious about how other people do it.

When does Christmas begin for you, and what does that mean? Is it decorations going up, or the nice food coming out? Is there a particular event, or does it just creep up?

Tree always up by 14th December as it's a family tradition due to it being by late sisters birthday and tree and dec's down by 12th night !!

GooseberryTart · 20/11/2020 18:47

Christmas films usually come on towards end of Nov but this year DD has her mocks. Big clean up and decorations go up first weekend of December. Cards posted mid December and thats usually when the Baileys comes out and the red cabbage gets made and frozen. Nice food comes out Christmas eve. Decorations come down either 30th Dec or 1st or 2nd of Jan.

ILoveAnOwl · 20/11/2020 18:51

Christmas things up on the day after DDs birthday which is a few days before christmas. Everything comes down the night before we go back to school. No Christmassy things (santa visits etc) until late December.

waitrosetrollydolly · 20/11/2020 18:54

A monster 14foot tree usually arrives mid December and is taken down on 2nd Jan ... still finding bloody needles until flipping easter !

DappledThings · 20/11/2020 18:54

Up beginning of December, earlier than I would like. Down on 6th Jan and not a moment earlier. I judge people more for bringing them down early than for putting them up early.

Bwlch · 20/11/2020 18:58

24th of December to 5th of January. The tree and decorations go up a couple of weeks before if we are at home. We don't bother if we are away.

IceCreamAndCandyfloss · 20/11/2020 18:59

Tree goes up weekend before and down around 28th. Treats from when tree goes up, movies galore and extra special food for the three days of Christmas.

laudemio · 20/11/2020 19:06

Mince pies, mulled wine or cider anytime from 1st Dec
Food prep for Christmas first two weeks of Dec
Tree up the weekend before Christmas and down on the 4th/5th Jan
Start feeling festive from 21st Dec onwards, wrapping presents, listening to Christmas music etc.

UtterlyUnimaginativeUsername · 20/11/2020 19:10

Christmas bedclothes, advent calendars and Cristmas books from the first.

Ella Fitzgerald on spotify from the 1st (it's tradition in our house). Then Christmas music from early to mid-month or so, the weekend we start putting the decorations up.

The big tree goes up on the 18th this year.

Then it all ends on the 2nd; once we hit the new year, I like to clear the decks and have a fresh start.

Christmas box (seasonal books, toys, advent calendar) out on the 1st, tree and decs on first weekend of Dec, everything put away on 31st. Christmas snacks and treats all month!

mamaduckbone · 20/11/2020 19:17

Christmas only starts in December in our house - the late night shopping evening in our town is usually the first Friday in December so I'll have my first mulled wine and mince pie then. We have a real tree so that doesn't go up until mid-December.
Ds1 has his birthday on Nov 22nd and he always went into absolute orbit at this time of year when he was little, so even though he's now nearly 15, I have that residing feeling that we shouldn't get carried away too early!

Deelish75 · 20/11/2020 19:18

From mid Oct I start looking and ordering from M&S and Sainsbury’s food to order. Also start looking and booking the children’s Christmas activities.
Bake the Christmas cake at end of Oct.
Get the Christmas scented diffuser out at beg of Nov.
Start Christmas present shopping and wrap as I go from the beg of Nov.
Make Christmas pudding and mince pies at end of Nov.
Put the Christmas tree up and other decorations in the living room and wreath on the front door at beg of Dec.
Decorate the dining room when the children finish school.
DD’s birthday is first week in Jan so the decorations will come down that first weekend.

Yika · 20/11/2020 19:21

I start thinking about christmas once we are into December / advent. Start doing cards and buying presents in first half Dec if organised. Tree up around 15 December until 6th January. I like a gradual build up, with music, candles, carols, greenery all intensifying through the month.

RuthW · 20/11/2020 19:21

Starts on the 1st Dec and ends 27th

PhantomErik · 20/11/2020 19:25

I start making lists of present ideas in the summer & start buying soon after.

Tree goes up just before 1st December as I like it to look all lovely & festive when the DC open their first door on the advent calendar. Going up on 27th Nov this year as DH is working over the weekend.

Christmas duvet covers go on DC beds on their last day of school so they come home to it all done. So 18th Dec this year.

All decorations & tree down on 31st Dec as we like to start the new year clear & tidy.

whitetilesmurf · 20/11/2020 19:27

1 December decorations are up although it will be next weekend given this year. Down on or around 28th but most definitely before Hogmanay. Can’t be dealing with the clutter into a New Year.

PaddyF0dder · 20/11/2020 19:32

It’s an Irish tradition (at least for my family) that xmas begins with a tv show called The Late Late Toy Show. It’s on every year on the last Friday in November.

Tree up. Xmas jumpers on. Xmas party food. Best night of the year.

whitetilesmurf · 20/11/2020 19:35

@DappledThings

Up beginning of December, earlier than I would like. Down on 6th Jan and not a moment earlier. I judge people more for bringing them down early than for putting them up early.
Why judge?
MsSquiz · 20/11/2020 19:57

Christmas starts on 1st November for me, although no decorations go up until 1st December and ends on New Year's Day when the tree and decorations come down.

TheRubyRedshoes · 20/11/2020 20:02

Whenever I feel like it. I don't follow any dates.
Usually about second week and December and Dec's have been known to stay up till valentines day.
Sometimes down shortly after Xmas. We go by general moods, weather etc.

LaBelleSauvage123 · 20/11/2020 20:11

Tree and decorations up two weeks before and down around the 5th Jan. I start feeling Christmassy when I start planning, which is usually at the beginning of Dec, but this year was about two weeks ago.

sunshineandshowers40 · 20/11/2020 20:20

Decorations first weekend in Dec. All taken down on the 28th December. Christmas music last week November but have started a little earlier this year.

Mommabear20 · 20/11/2020 20:24

Always decorate on December 1st!
We did them today this year though as it's DD 1st Christmas and we wanted to enjoy it for a little longer this year :) she is loving the lights

Ahwig · 20/11/2020 20:24

My best friend at junior school’s birthday was mid December and when I went to her party I was so impressed that her tree was up as my mum was more of the “put it up as late as possible and take it down as soon as possible” type . I was telling my husband this story and he said but your birthday is in early December and it’s your house so you can put it up when you like . Omg I thought so I can. So first week in December now and I smile every time
