How much do you spend on their stocking?
How much on presents?

CottonSock · 20/11/2020 16:26

I don't spend a huge amount, but I don't do bikes and musical instruments as gifts. I see those as household purchases. I know the spend will be grow as they do.

CloudyVanilla · 20/11/2020 16:28

Oh yes and I forgot to add for mine that we have very little extended family. DP has none and I only have my mum and dad who buy the DC anything really so it is all on us.

Quornflakegirl · 20/11/2020 16:41

We have spent more than usual this year but saved in other ways with no christmassy outings like panto etc.
£500 on tree gifts and £80 on the stocking. They don't get other gifts from family members.

MotherExtraordinaire · 20/11/2020 17:05

About £100 all in. But many of the items will have bought in the sale, so the value is about £150. The stocking is about £20.

But it's all relative. Last year, was more expensive, solely because my child was having a much more expensive main present. Whereas this year there hasn't been such a request, however the next birthday will have a much bigger cost present as lo needs the next size up bike.

Cliffdonville · 20/11/2020 17:27

We usually spend about £500 on DD who is 5, this year she's got a mix of playmobil, sylvanian and schleich, a doll and loads of craft and small bits for her stocking.

She would be equally happy if we spent £50 though, my DH had an extremely traumatic childhood and lived in real poverty and definitely goes overboard.

Nonamesavail · 20/11/2020 17:57

@Ragwort

Spunbodge - don't feel bad, many people spend much less on presents than some of the amounts mentioned on here, I certainly do but I don't even post on these sorts of threads because I don't want to look sanctimonious.

Many people will just avoid these threads as it can get very competitive and materialistic.

Yep...plus not all responses will be genuine so read them with a pinch of salt.
Blossomhill4 · 20/11/2020 18:07

@Whattheactual20201

I spend about 3.5k between 2 DC Xmas and birthdays ( both have dec / jan ) birthdays.
What main presents do you buy? That’s a lot of money! Unless your getting a holiday included in that.
FuzzyPenguin · 20/11/2020 18:12

We aim for about £250 for everything we get DS so stocking, presents, fancy advent calendar.

CarolEffingBaskin · 20/11/2020 18:28

I know we're not supposed to answer these, but hey.

It varies year on year dependant on our financial situation to be honest. This year I started very early and we are incredibly fortunate that we're in a good position.

Due to this, it is likely to be between £3-600 per child this year. I have 4, aged from 7-13, the younger ones cost less. Big ones have big ticket electronics this year (PS5 and Gaming PC). I'm not afraid to buy second hand though, and the PC will be refurbished.

Stockings are cheap, I don't put in anything that costs more then £5. Probably about £25-30 per child. We also do a Christmas eve box with pyjamas, book and snacks in. I get PJs for this in Sainsbury's with double up vouchers so they cost nothing, so it's very cheap for just snacks and a book.

Some year's we've been on are arses and been lucky to scrape £100 per kid. This year we're making the most of it being a bit more!

Feministicon · 20/11/2020 18:29

@Morgan12

These never go well.

We don't do stockings, I think this might be more of an English thing? I'm in Scotland.

I've spent £980 on DS1 and might get him one more thing which would make it an even £1000.

DS2 is younger so less spent on him. Around £250.

😱😱😱😱 On what??
Feministicon · 20/11/2020 18:36

@Atalune

I don’t count.

DS- maybe £600. He’s getting a laptop footy boots and then some other bits

Dd- about £400. She’s getting a chrome book, a Lego set and a fur coat then stockings.

It’s possibly more. I don’t track it. We spend within our means.

When they were smaller it was second hand and much much more frugal. That simply won’t cut it now and it’s not a stress. So it’s all good.

Do you mean you are buying her a fur coat and stockings or those gifts plus a stocking 😂
Feministicon · 20/11/2020 18:38

My DS has a December birthday so I have bought him his first games console but that’ll be for birthday and Christmas plus games and a stocking.

LadyCatStark · 20/11/2020 18:38

Dunno around £500 maybe? I’ve not spent a huge amount so far but I’ve got plenty of ideas. DH wants to leave the money in premium bonds until 1st Dec so they’re eligible for the draw 🙄 not that we ever win! We only have one child (11) and he doesn’t actually want much this year, but it adds up quickly as they get older!

whattodo2019 · 20/11/2020 19:40

@Ragwort

Why do you ask? Do you feel worried that you spend too much ... or not enough? Every family will be different, spend what you are comfortable with, but never go into debt for the sake of a few Christmas presents.
i have never added up what i spend. Last night I started to add it up and was rather gob smacked !!!! I think i must spend around £800 per child ....

@RainbowMum11

Erm, her present from Santa comes in the stocking with a satsuma and bits & bobs, main present is £20 Also bought a few extra things that she will really like & enjoy, they come from me rather than Santa - probably about £50 in total I'm am doing an advent present this year instead of a Christmas Eve box so she has more use - the new Christmasaurus book & some Christmas leggings. Christmas is more about family than presents in our house, and I try to make sure she knows that Santa has a budget and doesn't bring everything you might ask for.
please don't get me wrong, despite spending an eye watering amount on presents... our christmas is focussed on family, church, and helping others. Totting up my spending has really made me reconsider my choices...

Normally it’s around £250 per dd, but dd1 has had a lucrative birthday with a bike and refurbished laptop (which she both needed).
I think it’s going to be lots of books this year.

itsgettingweird · 20/11/2020 19:53

I have 1 ds. I usually spend 200-250 on everything.

But his birthday I usually only spend about £50 as it's in middle of summer and we are usually on holiday and he doesn't tend to want much. He much prefers asking for stuff for Christmas 🤷‍♀️🤣

Holothane · 20/11/2020 19:55

We’ve no kids but we’ve spoilt each other this year and I’m not feeling guilty either, no debt. We don’t go out now much so Christmas is luxury food and presents and to make up for no church my nativity advent calendar.I’m so excited about that.

Wherearefoxssocks · 20/11/2020 20:08

Dunno. I've been spending the odd £10 or £20 here and there since August. It adds up but I haven't really noticed it.

I think probably £150 on main presents and £25-30 on stocking. And a fiver for a table present.

Then I've also bought stuff this year like a santa sack, christmas eve box and santa plate (my DS is very young so hopefully these will see him through his childhood). I've probably spent about £50 on those.

Oops. Don't tell my DP Grin

spidermomma · 20/11/2020 20:13

Around 700 each on under the tree for the older kids

200 ish on the baby (more toys then the other 6 and spent barely anything !!)

300/400 each on clothes & new shoes

30 on Xmas Eve boxs each !!

100 on the dog, new big bed, groomed and then toys and a selection box 🤣

newnamenancy · 20/11/2020 20:15

Jesus wept, I can't believe the amounts people are spending. I'm open mouthed with shock.

We're about £150 each child. Which feels like lots (both under 8 yes old)

We have lots of money, 7 figures, but I just can't fathom spending as much as some on here.

FirstTimeHome · 20/11/2020 20:20

Don't add it all up but I'd say probably about £250 each

formerbabe · 20/11/2020 20:23

I think probably £150 on main presents and £25-30 on stocking. And a fiver for a table present.

What's a table present?!

Kenworthington · 20/11/2020 20:29

I’ve. It added it up but I suspect around £600 each. I have three dc. Older teenagers and one adult. I don’t buy shit for the stockings: they’re almost big gifts in themselves. Couldn’t afford much when they were little. I enjoy spoiling them and we can afford it so 🤷🏼‍♀️

Greycurtiansarenaff · 20/11/2020 20:36

I'm not rich by any means but do generally spend about £500-£600 each dc at Christmas, then another £200 each on their birthday which is a week later. In my defence they don't get very much throughout the year, so will usually get most of the things they've asked for.

I don't buy everything in one go and some things are secondhand, but I think the older they get the more expensive things are. Ds2 has asked for two toys which normally retail at £70-£80, however I was very lucky over the first lockdown where they went down to £15 each and I love Christmas and seeing the excitement on their faces.
