How much do you spend on their stocking?
How much on presents?

These never go well.

We don't do stockings, I think this might be more of an English thing? I'm in Scotland.

I've spent £980 on DS1 and might get him one more thing which would make it an even £1000.

DS2 is younger so less spent on him. Around £250.

EdwardCullensBiteOnTheSide · 19/11/2020 21:24

£980😱

elsaesmeralda · 19/11/2020 21:24

200

MrsGrindah · 19/11/2020 21:25

Why? Surely it doesn’t matter what anyone else can afford? Threads like this help nobody .

elsaesmeralda · 19/11/2020 21:25

That's not on a stocking btw 🤣 don't do them

formerbabe · 19/11/2020 21:27

£60-100 each on their main under the tree gifts

Stockings...£50-80 each I'd imagine although I buy things months in advance so don't notice really

Mammaaof · 19/11/2020 21:28

Ds6 around £800 this year and DD3 around £400

LucyCharlotteP · 19/11/2020 21:29

I’ve never added it up we don’t have a budget we just get them more or less what they ask for. We don’t have loads of family buying them things. We don’t get into any debt or make our selfs broke.

Ragwort · 19/11/2020 21:29

Why do you ask? Do you feel worried that you spend too much ... or not enough? Every family will be different, spend what you are comfortable with, but never go into debt for the sake of a few Christmas presents.

Takethewinefromtheswine · 19/11/2020 21:31

No idea about stocking v main, just buy it all together and chuck some of it in her stocking. She's 15, so knows it's all from me anyway.
Spent more than usual, but she has been a legend this year, so bought a few extra bits I knew she'd love. About £450 I think.

iamtheoneandonlyyy · 19/11/2020 21:37

Someone will be along with that bloody rhyme soon.

I don't know, it's more based on size and amounts to open as mine are young so you can get some big things for not very much. Got one main present second hand and saved 80 quid I was well happy

IdblowJonSnow · 19/11/2020 21:40

I don't add it up but maybe 200 on the older one. Slightly less on my younger one.

Lovemusic33 · 19/11/2020 21:43

I don’t really have a budget, depends what they want/need but obviously within reason. This year it’s probably a bit more due to covid and dd doing so well in GCSE’s. Dd1 needs a ipad for A level work so that’s £320 on her main gift, stocking probably around £30, 2 other gifts around £30 so £380 ish. Dd2 so far about £150 but have managed to get most of her presents on offer (mainly Lego).

They are teens so you don’t get much for your money, piles are shrinking each year but costing more 😖

Flackattack · 19/11/2020 21:46

Always more than I think and I try and stick to a budget. I don’t count all the extras (pjs, 1st Dec, Christmas Eve box and days out.
It’s all relative to what you can afford and age. Surely a 2 year old doesn’t have as expensive taste as a teenager.
I see people justifying it by saying they don’t buy in the year. If you want to and most importantly can afford it, spend what you want!
I try not to give in to pressure as I know you’ll always want to outdo yourself the next year! (I often fail!)

Smellbellina · 19/11/2020 21:49

Not a clue, I have an idea in my head that it’s circa £50 on the present from me and some other amount on the stocking but this is all bollocks based on what my DP’s spent on us about 25 years ago.
I just buy stuff 🤷🏻‍♀️

firstimemamma · 19/11/2020 21:49

£40-£50 including stocking.

swimster01 · 19/11/2020 21:51

Max £200 - can afford to spend what I want but I think Christmas is way too materialistic as it is

TheLastStarfighter · 19/11/2020 21:52

It varies completely from year to year depending on circumstances, how old they were, what they want, what they need, what we have already bought for them during the year.

There have been years when we spent about £20-£30 each (they were young, we had no money, and we were lucky to get nice stuff second hand or free), and years when we spent up to about £300 each (we had the money).

This year I think it’s about £200-£250 each, including a 1/4 share each in a family PS5, but I am very fortunate that I haven’t had to budget it so it could be more.

AGnu · 19/11/2020 21:54

For stockings we aim for no more than £5 per present & a max of 12 presents, so £60 max per child. It's probably more like £45-50.

Main presents for the older 2, 9yo & 7yo, will be around £60-70 each, the toddler will probably be more like £30. I imagine the things they want will get more expensive over the next few years!

lifesnotaspectatorsport · 19/11/2020 21:56

I don't like going overboard at Xmas and we do buy toys fairly often through the year. So DS3 will be getting a scooter as his main gift, around £40, plus some other tree pressies and stocking fillers adding up to another £60ish. Baby twins are getting some wooden toys from Aldi, nice outfits and shared stocking with little things, probably £80-100 total. Can't believe how much some people spend!

DramaLlama12 · 19/11/2020 21:56

Normally £200 per child , I think this is plenty ...DH thinks it isn’t a lot

FundamentallyFucked · 19/11/2020 22:00

I have literally never added this up. 2 of my D.C. are adults now so I have done Christmas many many times but it has never crossed my mind to add up the cost of the gifts per child.

copperoliver · 19/11/2020 22:00

About £600 each and then husband likes to pick some stuff himself too obviously still from both of us, he likes to get football stuff and dvds ect he spends about £400. X

CuteOrangeElephant · 19/11/2020 22:02

DD(3) is lucky that she gets to celebrate both St Nicholas and Christmas with presents.

From St Nicholas she will get a bicycle (partially funded by a very generous family member!), 3 books, pyjamas and a wooden clock.

For Christmas she will get a wooden castle that cost us 20 pounds, and loads of other presents from her wider family. Total spend about 120 pounds from us. She would not get the bicycle if it wasn't for the generous family member.

Adelais · 19/11/2020 22:02

Probably £180-200 on dd1 and £60ish on dd2 (baby), that includes stocking presents.
