Worried DD11's presents are too grown up

DD has grown up so much in the last year and she doesn't seem to play with toys at all. Last year LOL dolls were on her wishlist along with squishies, So Bomb kits etc but this year she wants "cool trainers", anime stuff and art supplies...all fine but I'm worried she doesn't have a toy of sorts.

Her younger brother has so many things to play with/do for christmas that I'm worried she'll be disappointed. But he's 6 so their tastes are bound to be different.

They do have a SNES mini to share and I know they'll both like that.

Is this just normal growing up? Am I worrying over nothing?

Is there something your 11 is asking for that seems like the must have toy for that age?

I was thinking about getting us matching oodies so there's still some silliness.

I feel the same sometimes with DD, she's 10 and a half.

I've got her:

Baking stuff
Kindle
Roller boots
Art stuff (canvases etc)
Cat onesie
Sims game for PlayStation
Hoodie
Nice cushion for her bed
Xmas outfit

She doesn't play with anything now but she still loves a soft toy so I'll get her something like that too. It's a funny age isn't it?

LabradorGalore · 16/11/2020 12:17

Has she just started high school? It sounds quite common, they do tend to go off toys at this age and want to explore their newly found interests.

Personally I bought DD a couple of toys about that age anyway - more stocking fillers, so that they were still there if she wanted the option. They were played with! But DD still liked her other items too.

pjmask · 16/11/2020 12:18

I could have written your post! I have the same worries, but I know how happy my dd will be when she opens her cosplay and anime things, and her new trainers. It's a big change all of a sudden when they start secondary and I have also bought some cheap fun craft stuff just in case, my eldest used to get occasional yearnings for her old things and would sometimes revisit them whilst "helping" younger sibling.

BunTooti · 16/11/2020 12:20

It really is.
I look at everything and either think no that's too young for her or no that's too old for her Grin .

Plus I don't want her to feel like she has to ask for more 'grown up' things and can't still play and be silly. Whilst listening to what she's actually in to...minefield!

What is it with anime? Grin
This is really reassuring. Thank you.
I think I was asking for clothes by this age.

I do have a few joke/silly things for her stocking.

Normal growing up. My mum always used to feel bad at Christmas when I was a young teen and my brother was surrounded by toys in big boxes (he was much younger than me) and emphasised that she’d spent the same on us - not that I was upset at all!

When you get older your presents get smaller. Doesn’t mean you like them any less.

BunTooti · 16/11/2020 12:28

My Mum did the same to be honest.
I would just hate for her to see her brother so excited and her with less fun stuff...but it's also stuff I know she's in to, like drawing etc. So it probably is fun to her...I'm definitely over thinking!

Plus there'll be robux, no doubt.

What about a game? Something like Dobble might be good, if you don't have that. They have a few character versions as well as the original.

Lovemusic33 · 16/11/2020 12:32

Totally normal, I really miss buying toys. 14 year old dd still likes Lego and I have got her gravitrax but other than that she doesn’t play with much, she has ASD so is a lot younger mentally, her older sister hasn’t really had any toys since she was 10/11 other than soft toys which she collects, it’s all been tablets, phones, camera and games consoles.

Treaclewading · 16/11/2020 12:58

We have the same here.

We got some Kracie Popin cooking kits to add to her present pile, she can do these while siblings play. They are basically mini Japanese food kits, teens seem to like them, probably just the novelty value, tofucute sell them (not enough time to get them shipped via Amazon now).

reluctantbrit · 16/11/2020 13:02

We had the same. I think 10 was the first year with hardly any toy (some Lego I think) and from 11 they were gone completely.

We found a good compromise with things to do, baking, science experiments, art.

DD is 13 now and apart from make up and a calendar she has absolutely no idea what to ask for. Sigh, toys were easier.

IncludeWomenInTheSequel · 16/11/2020 13:08

We've got Dobble and some other games. Exploding Kitten reviews are not that great, is it good? Or anyone have any suggestions?

I'm sitting with a groaning Amazon basket, want to get it all done today!

Nat6999 · 16/11/2020 13:21

What about some more grown up Lego? Or the Lego Boost that builds in to robots that can be used to introduce Coding?

Echobelly · 16/11/2020 13:23

I don't think I bought DD any toys on her 11th birthday, all sounds fine to me.

ShinyGreenElephant · 16/11/2020 13:32

Sounds fine to me, my Dd was like that from 10. This year shes got a Polaroid camera, new fitbit, Alexander mcqueen trainers that cost more than every pair of shoes I've ever owned added together, loads of clothes, makeup and heated rollers. Shes just turned 12. I have also got a couple of games - sore lower monopoly as shes the worst loser ever and a new version of exploding kittens which we love. It does feel like the little ones presents are more fun but it's what she wants so she will be happy.

BunTooti · 16/11/2020 13:54

Can I be your DD @ShinyGreenElephant ? Grin her presents sound amazing.

Thanks again everyone. I feel better knowing it's not just us. A game or something we can do together is a really good idea.

I just tagged you in a thread about unique smart gifts for kids, I've been watching it and got some great ideas, the website the OP has linked to is really good.

Hope the tag worked!

Poppyismyfavourite · 16/11/2020 14:24

exploding kittens is fun but NOT suitable for an 11 yr old! The art and language on the cards is quite explicit!

teaorwine · 16/11/2020 14:40

My then 9 yr old and 11 yr old loved exploding kittens, cant remember anything too rude about it! My 11 yr old wants a ring light and tripod even though she doesn't have any social media accounts, the James Charles mini morphe eye palette.... I've said no make up to next year but feel under huge pressure as that's all.shes asked for.

BunTooti · 16/11/2020 14:42

@IncludeWomenInTheSequel thank you so much!

Dontstepinthecowpat · 16/11/2020 14:45

My 10 and 13 year old DS are both really into Lego. Mostly Harry Potter. Lots of books too, and from this thread I’m going to get some exploding kittens!
