Worried DD11's presents are too grown up

DD has grown up so much in the last year and she doesn't seem to play with toys at all. Last year LOL dolls were on her wishlist along with squishies, So Bomb kits etc but this year she wants "cool trainers", anime stuff and art supplies...all fine but I'm worried she doesn't have a toy of sorts.

Her younger brother has so many things to play with/do for christmas that I'm worried she'll be disappointed. But he's 6 so their tastes are bound to be different.

They do have a SNES mini to share and I know they'll both like that.

Is this just normal growing up? Am I worrying over nothing?

Is there something your 11 is asking for that seems like the must have toy for that age?

I was thinking about getting us matching oodies so there's still some silliness.

Anime is Japanese style animation, very popular. Dd is into it. There's a subscription channel via the internet that's good and (well last year) there was a month free trial, handy if she's unoccupied. Also (and I say it with caution as it drove me crazy) she might like kpop lots of it is very tween friendly lyrics wise[/quote]
she might also like Babymetal (japanese rock) which is very popular among the people I know that like Anime.

My eldest is 11 she’s a very grown up 11. She’s not played with toys for around 2 years now.
I don’t understand why. But if she didn’t ask for them I wasn’t going to waste money. This year she’s asked for a camera to start Vlogging. First it was the new iPhone but dad refuses to buy it when she’s got a perfectly good phone XR. I’m going to watch out for the one she would like over Black Friday and see. She would also like some Alexander Macqueen trainers, again I don’t know about that. We’ve already spent a small fortune on her. My youngest is a dream to buy for 🤣.

Op, my ds1 is 7.5 and has never really been into toys not like ds2 - he is so easy to buy for.

He loves his Kano which is a build your own coding computer. He also loves baking and music.

@HerbErtlinger

I feel the same way about my DD10. She wants a mirror and curling tongs and make up. She's at her dad's over Xmas until the 27th so her main gift is actually a new cabin bed which she doesn't know about and while she's away, we're giving her bedroom a Harry Potter makeover (new bed, curtains, rug, pictures, cushions, lights, accessories). She will have the presents she's asked for at my mum's house after we collect her and then when we get home, her bedroom door will be wrapped... I feel sick with anxiety about it (especially as I've read some MN comments about bedroom furniture being a crap Xmas present.

Last year was all toys so it feels very odd not getting her any. I did speak to her and explained that her list meant she wouldn't have any toys to open and to think how she would feel and she looked a bit worried and ended up asking for a barbie which I've got her. It's hard when they start to grow up. I've still got a 3 year old so can still indulge in the toy buying for a bit longer. The 3 year old is definitely the easier to buy for!

@herbErtlinger just wanted to say my parents decorated my bedroom for me the Christmas before I was 11. I remember opening my door Christmas morning to see a new cabin bed, all new bedding and my room decorated. It is still one of my best Christmas presents and memories ever over 35 years on. I really hope your DD has as much enjoyment as I did.

@2gorgeousboys thank you, I'm so pleased to hear that, it's made me feel a bit better

Hello, I just wanted to chip in and say the same! It wasn't Christmas I don't think, it must have been my birthday. But my mum also redecorated my room as a surprise, with the wrapped door when I was around that age, and it is one of my favourite childhood memories. It was amazing! I'm sure your DD will be just as delighted!

Pansypath · 18/11/2020 17:14

A Lego set would be good to play with on the day. There are some pretty grown up ones you build to display rather than build to play with iyswim

I got pop tarts too... mine loves american culture stuff
HerbErtlinger · 18/11/2020 17:26

@CarolEffingBaskin thank you, she's a Harry Potter nut so I'm really hoping she will love it

pinkksugarmouse · 19/11/2020 16:55

🤔 I remember my 11th birthday well (not the Christmas). It was the first year I got proper grown up presents, my first bra (my mum gave me this away from my brother and dad. And a bottle of Yardley perfume (not today's fashion) in a little satin pouch.

I expect I had other presents too but this are the ones I remember with happiness.

Recognising and acknowledging your daughter is no longer a little girl and is a pre-teen is good and she will probably appreciate that.

BunTooti · 30/12/2020 17:59

Hope everyone has had a lovely christmas. Just wanted to come back and say that DD loved her presents and I never should've doubted that.

My absolute favourite moment of the last week was when she was about 3 presents in and turned to me and said 'oh my god, you know me!' my heart almost burst.

Oh and the Kracie Popin cooking stuff is weird! Grin

Oh and a family member bought her Lego Dots that I'd not heard of, they got a big reaction.
