Christmas

Do you still send cards?

Gone are the days I wrote dozens.. I still send to distant relatives.. older ones not on sm, and a few neighbours who seem to maintain the tradition.

To me it's such a waste, other than for those there's no other way of saying Merry Christmas... which I think was the original intention 🎄

Absolutely! I love sending and receiving Christmas cards and having them up around the house. Sadly it's a dying tradition.

I love sending cards. Especially since we had a family get together and it was mentioned by so many people that they always know which is mine... h

Yes I send them. About 50 every year - although my mum send loads more than that.

Oops big fingers sent too soon.... I always choose a Victorian street scene and put in a few personal lines. It means a lot to some people and as Christmas is about giving happiness it really gave me a glow to hear the comments.

I normally write and send about 35 in this country, and another 20 overseas. It’s nice to keep in touch with people. I normally write them in batches when on overseas trips for work over the autumn so while this year is more important than ever, I am way behind on writing them.

I do. At least 70. Including foster kids who my foster mum (blood relative) also fostered who died on Christmas Eve. I write letters and send gifts to Christian friends I know who can no longer attend church (this isn't a covid thing I've done it for years) for advent and send advent cards (card sized advent calendars telling the story of Christmas) as well as Christmas cards. Letters are hand written so start writing those early (two hands in splints so writing very painful).

Yes it costs a lot.

But it means a lot to the people who get them.

I always say people don't need to send me any or buy me anything. If they do they get opened on Christmas Day.

I love sending them, we are abroad so haven't seen anyone at all this year and it's nice to receive some nice personalized post (I write a proper message in each one).

I like the tradition of sending cards, feels very thoughtful to receive one.

I might even add a round robin in mine this year Grin

To older relatives, all over 70.

I sent Easter cards for the first time this year. I think it's especially important for older people right now and makes a difference.

We do, and still receive lots.

I think they’ll be especially important and appreciated this year.

DH and I both have big families, old family friends and are fortunate to have lots of friends of our own. We send about 120.

I send them second class in early Dec and try not to think about the cost...

I only send to older relatives who enjoy receiving a card.

Maybe about 12 or so. Mostly to elderly relatives or far flung best friends where it’s more of a letter for the year

Report
earthyfire · 14/11/2020 22:13

Not as many as I used to but I do send to elderly relatives.

I generally only send them if I'm gifting a voucher or similar that would go on the envelope. But our families are both rather small so we get gifts for everyone anyway.

I do end up sorting out DS's cards to all the other kids at nursery though. So if they count I send about 30.

I send them to my parents and my sister as we live too far apart to see each other. We also used to send one to PILs when they were alive as they liked it. That's it though.

The days when I would sit and write dozens for extended family are gone now. They were mainly to DH's extended family as mine is much smaller. Funnily enough, it was always my job to write them. He almost never did. A few years ago I just said "no more" and stopped. It has been liberating.

I’ll be sending more than normal this year, mainly because I haven’t seen many of my friends or family since March, and I doubt we’ll be having our usual Christmas get togethers! Our local Scout Christmas post has closed down after many years and a huge amount of money raised due to a lack of volunteers which is a real shame, it raised money for some brilliant charities as well as the scout groups involved and saved people loads of money compared to Royal Mail!

Yes and hand deliver as many as I can.

I love sending them.

We don't normally but because we might not see people this year we have bought these cards with wildflower seeds in the front design. The recipient then plants the whole card and hopefully will get some lovely flowers. I know my mum will love it!

stayingaliveisawayoflife Those cards sound really lovely. I know a few people who would like receiving them. Do you mind telling me where you got them from please?

No just to immediate family. I hate doing them. I always tell people not to be offended when they don’t receive one I just don’t see the point of them. I love everything else about Xmas though.

I usually do for my Brownie Pack, most I see weekly on Zoom. They have been handed out before but this year a unit helper will hand out most as her daughter is at the same school (mostly same class), along with their badges. Many live very close to each other too.
A couple I will have to post.

They are always charity ones, no glitter or sparkles.

Other people I don't generally bother but might send a small number this year being an bizzare year.

Our Scout pack does a local 'Scout Post' which is always a good fundraiser at this time of year. The Scouts get fresh air and exercise and are doing something good for their community. Obviously it's a lot cheaper for members of the public to send their Christmas cards this way as well so it is a win-win situation Smile

YES, I love sending and receiving Christmas cards! They look so cheery and festive propped up around the house, an ongoing reminder that someone thought of you. A text message or similar just isn't the same. You read it then forget about it.

I always buy them in the sales for ridiculously low prices and have a large and beautiful selection :)
