Gardening Hamper Ideas

MalingeringMary · 14/11/2020 15:10

My in-laws are moving in the new year to a house with a massive garden, so I thought that, instead of the usual food hamper we do, we could do a gardening hamper.

I've found a really good tool bag (that looks a bit hamper-ish), with pockets etc so they can carry tools around.

But now I need ideas of what else to put in it. I've thought of funky veg seeds, gardening gloves.... And that's it!

Anyone done something like this? Any ideas greatly appreciated!

I'll still be putting wine/chocolate/cheese in there as they love these bits, but need some more ideas that tie in to the theme please!

Hand cream and those pads you kneel on?

RockingMyFiftiesNot · 14/11/2020 15:16

I was going to say kneeling pad! Garden twine? One year I found some in a tin that had an inbuilt cutter but haven't seen one since - I think from B&M bargains but maybe from a garden centre?
Lovely idea by the way.

ToLiveInPeace · 14/11/2020 15:19

Twine
Garden snippers (I misplace mine a lot)
Hand cream
Nail brush
Paper pot maker
Garden knee pads, to go with the gloves?
Kneeling mat

FannysSteadiedBuffs · 14/11/2020 15:23

Bulbs
Dibbler
Travel mug/insulated mug with lid
Solar powered shed light
Gorilla tape
Wireless doorbell (so they can be called from the house)

MalingeringMary · 14/11/2020 15:24

Oooh, kneeling mat, good shout everyone!

Hand creams and twine on the list too!

I'll get DP to have a look at snips next time he's in B+Q.

Keep em coming please!

A really good pair of secateurs. A bottle of Jeyes fluid for cleaning tools. Are they already keen gardeners? If not, maybe a good book on veg growing if you're buying them some veg seeds or other aspects of gardening if they're going to be doing new things. A nice flask, maybe with a garden pattern, if they're going to spend long periods of time out there. Maybe something decorative like a little bird feeder or lantern?

MalingeringMary · 14/11/2020 15:33

FIL is a keen gardener, their current house has a tiny garden, the new one is probably 8 times the size! Flask is a good idea, he loves his coffee so I'll see if I can find a garden themed flask. Thanks again everyone!

Gold leaf gardening gloves are the best. Garden string , plant labels, a mixed bag 0f small bulbs, spraxia , ixia, muscari alliums and a small set of pots to grow them in.

Not on the high street do lovely plant labels, chalk, slate and wooden ones.

UsernameSaved · 14/11/2020 15:35

Gardeners will have most things and they last 20+ years. I have been bought 4 pairs of secateurs- all wasted gifts

A hamper is likely to contain stuff they have or don't want -I would honestly avoid it. I bought my kneeler in 1999. My trug in 2006.

Planters/ bench?

These are amazing but may be too late for Christmas

MalingeringMary · 14/11/2020 15:43

They've said they would like new gardening tools, as most of their current stash is old/rusted/cheap, so they will appreciate new snips etc. Those trugs are beautiful, thanks for the link.

Gold leaf gloves on the list, thanks! (And for me, mine are rubbish!)

Could you afford to pop a National Garden Voucher or David Austin Voucher in? I had these before I moved and it was lovely to choose some new plants

Glendaruel · 14/11/2020 15:49

Do they like their history? There is a lovely book, Heirloom Plants by Thomas Etty, heritage seed merchant that tells you when various plants were first introduced, which you could get along with some of the seeds from their website

StartingOver2020 · 14/11/2020 15:54

I would love a Rocket Gardens subscription or voucher. If they are keen veg growers they would have time to prepare beds before lots of exciting veg plug plants arrived in the spring.

BeaMends · 14/11/2020 16:05

Secateurs with brightly coloured handles. Makes it easier to spot them, when you've put them down somewhere!

The times I've lost mine, and found them a week later after they've been rained on...

elsielegallez · 14/11/2020 18:54

Following as I’m trying to buy a gift for my brother who is a keen veg/fruit gardener. He used to have an allotment and now has a huge garden with greenhouse.

I’d love suggestions for where to buy unusual fruit/veg seeds - and what to buy?

VestaTilley · 14/11/2020 23:15

Good secateurs and a trowel.

NullcovoidNovember · 14/11/2020 23:37

If this was for me... A luxury kneeling mat, several pairs of good secuters.
A root trainer set and sweet pea seeds. Luxury hand cream and face sp cream, lovley gloves a few pairs and maybe some bare root roses? With root fungi stuff... And yes to gardening wire.. Maybe some bulbs? Perlite...

sansou · 15/11/2020 00:28

I would like this kneeling pad.

caringcarer · 15/11/2020 01:42

My Mum used to be a very keen gardener and used to get quite excited when she was given a big bag of the blood and bone fertilizer.

orangenasturtium · 15/11/2020 01:42

Come over to the gardening board @MalingeringMary!

Some suggestions:

A bulb planting tool
Seed sower
Tree lily bulbs
Gloriosa Rothschildiana bulbs

The Propagation Place is a social enterprise in Bristol that offer great vegetable and herb plug plants, if they want to grow vegetables. They do seasonal selection boxes, as well as individual species. You could send them a box for each season.

Norfolk Herbs do excellent herb gift sets (as well as salvias and geraniums). You could buy them a gift voucher.

These are good sites for unusual seeds @elsielegallez

zatarontoast · 15/11/2020 09:40

I would get them some spring bulbs, the end of Dec /early Jan is still ok for planting.

user1493494961 · 15/11/2020 14:40

I've bought several packets of Nightingale Sweet Pea seeds (named as a tribute to health care workers) to put inside Christmas cards.

AmIAWeed · 15/11/2020 14:47

Wet stone for sharpening tools.
Bird feeder.
Insulated mug
Pot maker (the sort for making seedling pots out if newspapers)

reservoircats · 15/11/2020 15:17

Rooting powder, Monty don book. Definitely knee pads and maybe some new secateurs. Some wire ties, small canes if they like to plant from seed? Potting grit.
