Gardening Hamper Ideas

MalingeringMary · 14/11/2020 15:10

My in-laws are moving in the new year to a house with a massive garden, so I thought that, instead of the usual food hamper we do, we could do a gardening hamper.

I've found a really good tool bag (that looks a bit hamper-ish), with pockets etc so they can carry tools around.

But now I need ideas of what else to put in it. I've thought of funky veg seeds, gardening gloves.... And that's it!

Anyone done something like this? Any ideas greatly appreciated!

I'll still be putting wine/chocolate/cheese in there as they love these bits, but need some more ideas that tie in to the theme please!

Has anyone suggested a hori hori knife? I love mine.

I've got my DH some of these from Amazon; they also come in a 50mm thickness.www.<a class="break-all" href="https://amazon.co.uk/VELCRO-Brand-One-Wrap-Plant-Ties/dp/B0010YQJZ0/ref=sr_1_1?dchild=1&crid=29N886ITIJPM0&keywords=velcro%20plant%20tape&sprefix=velcro%20plant%2Caps%2C223&qid=1605454690&sr=8-1&tag=mumsnet&ascsubtag=mnforum-christmas-4079243-Gardening-Hamper-Ideas" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">amazon.co.uk/VELCRO-Brand-One-Wrap-Plant-Ties/dp/B0010YQJZ0/ref=sr_1_1?crid=29N886ITIJPM0&dchild=1&keywords=velcro+plant+tape&qid=1605454690&sprefix=velcro+plant%2Caps%2C223&sr=8-1

When did one as gift it had
Gloves
Twine
Cane toppers
Plant labels
Write on anything pen
Miracle grow
Sharpening stones and oil ideal for sharpening secateurs, shears etc. Niwaki do some decent ones and also they do hori hori tool, ideal for keen gardeners.

Knittedfairies · 15/11/2020 15:51

Well, it wouldn't fit in a hamper but most gardeners would be thrilled with a lorry load of well-rotted manure...

@orangenasturtium

Come over to the gardening board *@MalingeringMary*!

Some suggestions:

A bulb planting tool
Seed sower
Tree lily bulbs
Gloriosa Rothschildiana bulbs

The Propagation Place is a social enterprise in Bristol that offer great vegetable and herb plug plants, if they want to grow vegetables. They do seasonal selection boxes, as well as individual species. You could send them a box for each season.

Norfolk Herbs do excellent herb gift sets (as well as salvias and geraniums). You could buy them a gift voucher.

These are good sites for unusual seeds @elsielegallez
www.plant-world-seeds.com (worth a visit to see the gardens and visit the nursery if you are ever in Devon)

Thank you so much @orangenasturtium - the plant-world-seeds is perfect - just going to buy a load from there! 😊

If they have said they want new tools then implementations.co.uk for copper tools - I have a shameful collection of these and they are absolutely brilliant. Or some Niwaki or Felco secateurs. I can also recommend Felco loppers - mine are truly fantastic.

But please be really careful what you buy for them - I'm a very keen gardener and my heart sinks when I'm bought gardening gifts I haven't asked for as they are very rarely what I want at all. I'd definitely go for a voucher or straight out ask them.

Thanks for all the advice and links. Lots to look through.

Has anyone mentioned a Hori Hori knife yet? I'm not even that keen a gardener, but I really fancy one!

OdeToAutumn · 15/11/2020 21:03

@Gufo my husband also said hori hori knife - he said he loves his.

Other things used a lot, folding knife, twine, tape measure, markers to show what you’ve planted

sueelleker · 16/11/2020 08:31

As regards markers, my DH prefers extra long ones-he says some plant names don't fit on short markers!
