I do every year.
This year it's a bottle of flowerbomb perfume and a dressing gown.
What have you bought yourself ?

I guess if I bought something in the January sale and wrapped it up then it would actually be a genuine surprise by December!

myhobbyisouting · 11/11/2020 20:22

@waltzingparrot that is genius! I'm going to do it!

Andylion · 11/11/2020 21:00

I'm considering getting myself a subscription box. I've been comparing them and the only one I think I would like is Causebox. They are American but ship to Canada. I did a search and, apart from some complaints about late shipment, which I think is understandable due to Covid, I've seen only seen rave reviews. It seems too good to be true and I wondered if they have a bunch of bots posting.

FoolShapeHeart · 11/11/2020 22:26

No but my cat used to get me something & now my toddler does 😂 This year it's recycled cashmere wrist warmers, Cards against humanity, & luxury vegan body cream (all bargains but wouldn't buy them for myself without a reason).

AvoidingRealHumans · 11/11/2020 22:54

I do, I'm a single mum so no partner to ask for things. My mum and sister always get me stuff but I buy some bits and bobs for myself for Xmas and my birthday (week before xmas) and I let my sons wrap them and give to me on the day.
I've got myself a new bag so far this year and will probably get some makeup and other little things.

Somethingkindaoooo · 11/11/2020 22:56

Nope, I don't buy myself anything, but dammit, what a fantastic idea 😄

Lollykins · 12/11/2020 01:48

I usually buy myself a handbag come Christmas but this year it feels like it’d be an over indulgence given job insecurity (not to mention fact that I’ve barely been out since March so last year’s present is still pretty unused.) Seeing something ‘naice’ under the tree in the run up to Xmas always brings me a lot of joy though (I’m from a small family who are not big on Xmas so from that perspective it doesn’t feel too outlandish a treat.)

sneakysnoopysniper · 12/11/2020 02:26

I dont buy anyone Christmas presents. Its all a commercial trap. I stopped back in the 1970s so thats one less present for my friends and family to think of. And yes, they do respect my reasons. So many of them have begun to cut down these last few years and only buy for the children,

IHaveBrilloHair · 12/11/2020 02:31

Yep, haven't decided what I want this year but I'll be getting something.

JinglesWish · 12/11/2020 04:43

Always do 😊 So far I’ve got a bottle of M&S sparkly snowglobe gin, a pair of cute Joules wellies, x2 pairs of Christmas pyjamas, a set of 3 Benefit mascaras, some Hedwig hand cream and Hogwarts bath bombs from the Boots Harry Potter range, a calligraphy set, x2 Molton Brown shower gel baubles and x2 Molton Brown hand cream (technically the MB bits were a free offer when I bought gifts there for MIL and DH, but I’m excited as I wouldn’t have bought them for myself).

I feel I need some books and nice chocolates and maybe some welly socks, so I’ll ask DH for those.

PerveenMistry · 12/11/2020 04:52

Through the year I order myself items from Amazon or other retailers- old collectible books, toiletries, garden supplies, nice underwear , etc - and when the packages arrive I toss them unopened into a closet.

Come Christmas I stick bows on and put under tree. By then I don't recall what's in the boxes and envelopes, so it adds a bit of suspense and fun.

slothtrot · 12/11/2020 04:53

No, why would you ?

I've been receiving Causebox for a year as a gift and it's crap. Things like mugs, cheap chain bracelets, ugly vinyl handbag, lots of face serum, the occasional woven towel or poncho, plastic bento box. Dollar-store / Walmart stuff. I know they claim the stuff benefits emerging economies but it seems wasteful and useless to me.

I have begged the giver to stop the subscription but she keeps forgetting.

Andylion · 12/11/2020 05:04

Thanks for the review @PerveenMistry . I googled "the truth behind Causebox" and found many, very bad reviews. I will have to think of something else.

Sorry to rain on your parade but they've been very disappointing.

KatherineJaneway · 12/11/2020 05:25

Usually treats like a VIP ticket at the Good Food Show for example or an Ipod.

IHaveBrilloHair · 12/11/2020 05:33

@slothtrot
Not all of us have people to buy us gifts.
Open your mind a bit and realise that others are in different circumstances.

Mumdiva99 · 12/11/2020 05:42

I usually do ... a book, chocolates, dressing gown, alcohol etc
@slothtrot I do it because I spend time making sure everyone else has nice stuff under the tree and I like some Xmas treats too. My OH isn't great at present buying. It's easier this way.

CheesyCheshireCat · 12/11/2020 06:01

I love this idea! This will be my first parent as a single parent, my DM and DSis are always generous, but I will be in a different country to them this year. I´m going to sort myself a stocking, with all the traditional things my DM always (and still does!) put in. This is going to be fun.I will also treat myself to something like wireless earphones. And I´ll be hanging around for more ideas. I love the idea of a red lipstick, but I never wear lipstick and I always feel a bit silly when I put it on.

junglepie · 12/11/2020 06:31

yes, always. I buy myslef a birthday gift too. Started after the year DH bought me a tea towel for Christmas ! (yep just a tea towel, and not even a particularly impessive tea towel!) last year Iboughtmyself perfume and new wireless earphones and some books. Have a few bits so far this year...need to get on with it really!

I don't have anybody to buy me gifts but I still wouldn't buy myself one.

Onedropbeat · 12/11/2020 07:47

I don’t normally but this year I need a new casserole pot and want a mixer so keeping an eye out on the Black Friday sales

Lovemusic33 · 12/11/2020 09:07

@slothtrot

No, why would you ?
Because it’s Christmas and we all deserve something, especially this year. I’m a single parent and I don’t really get gifts from anyone else. My kids have asked in the past “why don’t you have presents?” So I started buying myself a few bits, it also gives me something to do Christmas evening when the dc have gone to bed and I’m on my own, I can read a new book or make something (craft). Why shouldn’t people buy the self gifts?
slothtrot · 12/11/2020 09:28

I just see them as pointless because a gift is something that somebody else gets for you, it's the thought of another person caring for you enough to choose a gift and give it to you. Buying something for myself just doesn't mean anything because it's a waste of money.

IHaveBrilloHair · 12/11/2020 09:52

I care for me and I get exactly what I want.
What's not to love?
You just go back into you Scroogey cave.
