Train track for 2 year old

Ok, not strictly a Christmas present but for a little boy who's birthday is a couple of days after Christmas. Can any of you lovely people recommend a train track that can be added to, is good quality, will withstand a toddler playing with it and last with him as he grows up. Is brio the way to go? Thanks everyone ☺

Brio!

Clymene · 10/11/2020 20:05

BigJigs fit with Brio and Thomas trains but you get a lot more for your money.

We have brio, it goes with anything. We have a ton of it now. They do some lovely start sets, Smile

Ylvamoon · 10/11/2020 20:07

Yep, brio is exactly what you want! It's an all-time classic. DC had a set & I remember playing with my DB's set...

EcoCustard · 10/11/2020 20:10

Lidl had some fab wooden track sets last week, and their previous sets work with Brio and a lot cheaper.

Nackajory · 10/11/2020 20:11

Ikea. I've still got ours, I love it.

ifancyagreencard · 10/11/2020 20:13

We've decided our lockdown family Christmas amusement with be Competitive Brio Building. DD is now 20 Grin; we've just never chucked it as it lasts forever and may do our grandchildren one day. We will, however, be adding GinGininto this year's party games . .

Magicbabywaves · 10/11/2020 20:14

Brio. But we’ve got IKEA amd Sainsbury’s mixed in.

NerrSnerr · 10/11/2020 20:18

Any of the compatible wooden track. Brio, Tesco, big jigs, Lidl etc.

Bikingbear · 10/11/2020 20:18

Another option is Duplo. Where you can actually put people on the train.

Offtothedogs · 10/11/2020 20:19

Yes I should have said Brio and all the other fab stuff that fits with it Grin My now 6 and 4yos have been playing with it since they were crawling and they still love it. And DH and I aren't averse to a bit of a build-off Smile

whoareyouIwonder · 10/11/2020 20:20

IKEA or Brio

PhylisPrice · 10/11/2020 22:02

Thanks everyone! Really helpful 😊 brio sounds like the one to go for, I'm going to have a look at the duplo one you can put people on as well though, he would absolutely love that!

I was coming in to say Brio too.

You can get Brio sets with little people and they got some of the trains. They are much smaller than Duplo, though.

Tesco Direct used to do a fab remote control train that worked on brio. It had various train noises and forwards / backwards on the remote. Was a favourite toy for many years. Not sure whether you can still get it. The TV remote used to set off the noises though!

WildCherryBlossom · 11/11/2020 10:19

Brio and Bigjigs!!!

UnalliterativeGeorge · 11/11/2020 10:19

Lidl have remote control trains in at the minute. And an excellent looking bridge that we might have to add to our collection!

Merrow · 11/11/2020 10:52

We've got a ton of second hand Brio stuff from eBay and Facebook marketplace, it lasts so long that you definitely don't need to buy new and it meant our budget stretched to much more track than we expected.

Elvesinquarantine · 11/11/2020 10:54

We bought My First Thomas for ds.
He is now 20 and it is still going strong for ds 6!!

GrumpiestCat · 11/11/2020 10:56

Brio with ikea and big jig matchy stuff!

Deelish75 · 11/11/2020 17:48

Another vote for Brio.

DD nearly 6 still plays with hers and is getting new bits for Christmas. It was DS’s originally and he played with it until he was 7.

SpamIAm · 11/11/2020 21:21

I've bought brio for my 1yo with the battery powered train.

HomeSliceKnowsBest · 12/11/2020 21:13

The Duplo one is fab, DD6's LOL Dolls regularly ride this train and it will get a festive makeover as our under Christmas tree train! Highly recommend it!

We have a huge mix of every type imaginable, Brio, IKEA, Hape, Lidl, Wilko, Tesco, World of Imagination, Smyths. Honestly they are all compatible. Some of the really cheap supermarket sets only come with half sized pieces, which are useful to have in a big collection but I wouldn't get a set like that as a main gift.

Personally I'd avoid Brio unless you see a great deal (there usually is for Black Friday on Amazon) only because the other cheaper sets are just as good.

For a just turned 2 year old have a look at the Hape Rainbow puzzle railway and other Hape toddler range. There are all kinds of add one for that, like the xylophone track, jungle train, sensory bug trains etc. Smyth's do a range of wooden toys called Squirrel Play, and they have a nearly identical toddler train set with bead maze and shape sorter track piece for half the price. Lidl usually do a very similar toddler set around this time of year too.

Lidl have some sets in right now, including a jungle set, a dinosaur set or a metro set. Also battery trains. In my experience any set that has sound effect when the train goes over is a huge winner! The battery trains are really popular with my 3 year old but for 2 I'd probably wait for the next birthday for those.

We also have the Duplo train set. It is also really good, and much faster than wooden train sets, which DS really loves. I've bought a lot of imitation Duplo track as an add on and I can't tell the difference so it is really affordable to extend.
