I have an eight year old. Really likes a family board game. Throw me your recommendations please 🌸

Cadoo

Also carcassonne

Kingdomino
Azul (we've played this about 5 times a week since last Christmas- we're totally addicted!)

Bananagrams is really quite different from Scrabble. I'm a really pretty decent Scrabble player and I find Bananagrams a bit brutal because of the speed! But it's better for kids in a way, because there are no extra points for getting longer or better words.

Mine that age love Storymaster’s Tales, Weirding Woods. So do I! We also bought it as a present for our closest friends and they all love it, from seven to adult. Easy to set up and simple to understand but so much fun.

Sleeping Queens
Dobble
Pass the Pigs

TheCrow · 05/11/2020 17:03

Another vote for dobble! Our whole family loves it and it's great for people of different ages to play together without it being too difficult or easy for different ages.

TheCrow · 05/11/2020 17:05

My 8 year old also loves cluedo original version but that's because she always wins, I don't think she'd like it anywhere near as much if she wasn't so good at it

Notrobusta · 05/11/2020 20:13

Would a 4 year old manage carcassone or should I get the junior version ?

SuperLoudPoppingAction · 06/11/2020 21:26

It took me a while to work out carcassonne so I think the junior one might be a plan.

Game of life

My 8-year-old keeps coming back to Uno, Connect 4, and Guess Who, they are simple but so much fun for family time! And when it’s time to relax with a screen, HP 7 app has some easy, game-style fun that even I enjoy sneaking in.

pinkksugarmouse · 28/10/2025 11:46

Labyrinth. Its easy to learn and fun for teens and adults. I would say child of 8 would manage without help. A younger child might need to team up with someone else. It requires adaption and planning but in an enjoyable way. My daughter is 23 and we still play it now.

GiddyDog · 28/10/2025 12:16

My 8yo loves Yahtzee, Junior trivial pursuit, Ludo, Battleships and Pictionary.

He also enjoys card games.
He's joined chess club in school so a chess board is on this year's list!

Can a bright 3.5 year old play dobble, or the junior version?

Yes, my just turned 4 year old has been playing it for ages and often wins

🙄 I'm a Billy suggar. I've just realised how old this thread it.
It did come up without me searching for the topic though.

SerendipityDiamond · 30/10/2025 20:38

Dixit
Dobble
Incan Gold

sherbert83 · 30/10/2025 20:47

We love 'Outsmarted' - it's an interactive quiz game that you play with an app on your phone to play all the questions. It comes with loads of pre-loaded quiz topics, and you can buy more question packs as you wish (but you don't need to if you don't want to). You can even play with other people in other places if they also download the app.
