Does anyone do anything active on Christmas day?

We often go for a lovely walk on Christmas day and put a beef in the slow cooker for when we get back.

My dh and dc love wearing Christmas hats and greeting people we pass! (We live in the Lake District so lots of friendly walkers about, although much quieter at Christmas.

What active things do you do?

Walk after Christmas dinner, round park and back. Sets us up nicely for tea and Christmas pudding/Yule Log, and opening the rest of the presents.

To be fair, last year it was tipping it down and mum had recently had a hip replaced, so we didn't.

I run first thing in the morning - it’s always wonderfully quiet and otherworldly, probably my favourite run of the year. Then mid-morning there’s a mass sea swim here (I’m in the South of France) - it’s freezing but really exhilarating, and I’m normally one of the only wimps wearing a wetsuit. Hopefully that will go ahead this year - but who knows..... DP will head out for a few hours on the bike, then we’ll go for a long walk / play on the beach with the dog. We don’t have kids, and don’t do a ‘traditional’ Christmas - it is just a day to do exactly as we please.

We've had a few skiing holidays at Christmas, DH & DS love skiing and they would go out on the mountain for a few runs, it was always great fun with skiers in Santa outfits etc. I don't ski but would have a walk.

If we are not away skiing we would always go out for a walk, when we lived near the sea it was fun to watch the swimmers but not join in.

I don't think I could manage a day cooped up with family without getting some fresh air !

There are a lot locally who swim in the sea on Christmas Day, but we do that in the sailing club on 24th (it’s for charity but followed by hot showers, mulled wine and chat before they close the club for 3 days so very sociable).

On Christmas Day itself, we often walk the pier (it’s 1.8km). Which is usually very busy.

I used to surf on Xmas day. Have also gone for cycles rides. This year I would expect a long walk with new puppy

MrsSpringfield · 03/11/2020 09:24

Just a stroll. Only a couple or miles to stretch our legs. Usually late morning.

Isadora2007 · 03/11/2020 09:26

We live next to a park on the coast with little bits of woodland so we always have a walk to break up the day and burn off some cobwebs (and calories!)
Often the kids get something active so we get outside for that too- eg last year one son got an archery set so we all played that. Often a new football means a kick about. In previous years we’ve taken dolly buggies out or a new scooter etc.
Sometimes the adults sneak a baileys hot chocolate in a flask...

BabyMoonPie · 03/11/2020 09:31

Not Christmas day (I open presents, cook and eat) but I love going for a run early evening on Christmas eve. I love seeing people's houses lit up and I listen to Christmas music and feel festive (then it's home for a shower and our Christmas eve tradition of fajitas for tea)

CosyQueen · 03/11/2020 09:35

We always go for a long walk in the forest but we’re just about to move to the coast next week and I’m so tempted by previous posters suggestions of a cold sea swim - but I haven’t done that in years.

GameSetMatch · 03/11/2020 09:37

A brisk walk along the cliffs just before Christmas lunch, it’s nice to get out of the house and get fresh air. Everybody always seems happy and jolly too, I love watching children on their news bikes and scooters with a big smile of their faces!

AldiIsla · 03/11/2020 09:59

We'll be having an early afternoon walk. Breaks the day up and works up an appetite for dinner. Fresh air for the kids, then they'll have dinner followed by a film.

HUCKMUCK · 03/11/2020 10:01

We live near the sea and do try and get out for a walk at some point. I think we might try for a morning walk this year. We usually plan to go out after lunch but nobody feels like it then!!

waterthedog · 03/11/2020 10:22

I did Parkrun last year with DH and one of my DC's. We all wore Santa hats, it was a lovely way to start the day! I really miss my Saturday morning gig.

MsMiaWallace · 03/11/2020 10:44

We will this year. Got the Nintendo switch ring fit waiting for DS.

elQuintoConyo · 03/11/2020 11:05

Quick dog wee in the morning, bu tin the afternoon around 3 we'll go to the beach and get some exercise.

Then Boxing Day is the St Stephen's Day swim. We have joined intermittently over the years, but if it's still on this year then I'm definitely going in!

Christmas Eve We go to the pool in the morninng, then in the afternoon around 5 we walk around town and have hot chocolate and churros ( chocolate so thick you can stand a spoon in it!).

AcornsVsBcorns · 03/11/2020 11:07

Always a good dog walk first thing, befor anyone else in the house gets up.

There is soemthing truly festive about a woodland walk with the dog on Christmas morning.

Dovesandkisses · 03/11/2020 11:21

Always go on a family walk.

ToastandJamandTea · 03/11/2020 11:40

we always go for a walk after lunch.

2me2u2u2me · 03/11/2020 14:33

Definitely a walk over the hills from about 7am for a couple of hours, sets you up for the day then to eat, drink and be merry Grin

JellyfishandShells · 03/11/2020 17:13

We have smoked salmon/scrambled egg and fizz brunch at about 11.30 and Xmas meal at about 5pm so always ( unless weather really too bad) have long walk in the park to clear the head and build up an appetite in the early afternoon.

Ilovesausages · 03/11/2020 17:17

We just do a short walk - maybe an hour - usually by the sea. Just enough to blow away the cobwebs.

RuthTopp · 03/11/2020 17:19

OgwdihwO

Snap !
We do that as well , also live in Lake district !

actiongirl1978 · 03/11/2020 17:56

My children refuse to let me exercise on Xmas Day! DS still believes and as I exercise before breakfast when FC arrives I can't go out. DH and I fight each other for the dog walk after lunch!

But I do a long run boxing day morning and deliberately don't drink on Xmas day evening so that I'm not hungover.

I also don't drink on Xmas eve to avoid that sluggish feeling on Xmas day.

MarmaladeTeepee · 03/11/2020 18:09

Normally we wouldn't as we'd be away at DM's for Christmas and the day is taken up with various relatives popping in and out. However, might go for a walk this year depending on how the day goes and whether I sense we need it (DS and DD are at that age where they're either best friends or worst enemies). We do always go for a long walk on Christmas Eve and then to the beach on Boxing Day to watch all the crazy people do the Boxing Day dip, so if we do have a day just in the house I won't feel guilty.

Rshard · 03/11/2020 18:12

We usually fill the woodshed to work off our breakfast; dh chops, dd transports the logs down the garden in the wheelbarrow and I stack them. A bit weird but strangely fun and very satisfying to do.
