Do you have a starter on Christmas day?

I am trying to make this year as special as possible. I would like to make something nice for people to munch on whilst the main course finishes up.
No one in our house really likes fish and I am conscious that I don't want anything too heavy as I don't want people to be too full to eat the main course. What do you have for starter on Christmas day?

Yes, we normally have pate with brown bread toast and a side salad/garnish.

Of course! Prawn cocktail and smoked salmon here, without fail.

Of course! Always prawn cocktail, smoked salmon, brown bread and butter and lettuce here.

We don't have a starter - a few bowls of nuts and crisps are plenty for us before a large main meal. We take a break before pudding as it is and we have the cheese board on Boxing Day!

It’s just DH and I plus our five DC aged between 3 months and 10. I tried various starters over the years but none of them were really a hit and it created a lot of food waste so I don’t bother anymore. If they’re hungry before the main is ready they eat cheese and crackers.

We usually get a couple of nice looking packs of M&S party food on Christmas Eve - we have 1 and occasionally a 2nd while the turkey is cooking and we are lounging with wine opening presents in the sitting room.

In DBIL's house, there are vol au vents with a chicken and veggies filling - I think a creamy mushroom one would be nice. And there is always soup as well there (DMIL demand).

In DM's house, it is smoked salmon (with a few salad leaves and cherry tomatoes) or prawn cocktail (sometimes with avocado, sometimes on shredded iceberg).

In DGM's house, it used to be melon, fanned out on the plate with a mareschino cherry originally but updated to slivers of parma ham in later years.

I have seen lovely filo pastry "crackers" that look relatively simple to make and look pretty fab.

Prawn cocktail. Every single year Grin

No, we'd never make it to dessert with a starter.

We'll have blinis, smoked salmon and prosecco with breakfast at about 10/11 then go for a walk/watch film and then have veg soup (not my ideal) and then the main event at 1ish! We head off to the extended family for Xmas evening so will get lots of deserts, cheese and crackers etc.

No actual starter here, but an hour or so before dinner (which we don’t have until about 5 pm) I dish up canapés, nearly always M&S and including some fishy ones.

After a late breakfast - usually bagels/smoked/salmon/cream cheese this works well for us.
Any small Gdcs will have breakfast and lunch around their normal times.

It was always prawn cocktail, then I did grilled marinated King prawns wrapped in parma ham one year, but it was too much of a faff.

Since I've had the kids I've given up on starters.

I do like the deep fried camembert or brie with cranberry sauce though or a goats cheese thing.
