Do you have a starter on Christmas day?

I am trying to make this year as special as possible. I would like to make something nice for people to munch on whilst the main course finishes up.
No one in our house really likes fish and I am conscious that I don't want anything too heavy as I don't want people to be too full to eat the main course. What do you have for starter on Christmas day?

I love this question and seeing everyone's yummy starters!

twobrews · 02/11/2020 19:24

Previously we've had,
Goats cheese and pear salad,
Mini Yorkshire puddings with fillet steak, rocket and horseradish,
Baked Camembert with bread and crudités
Trio of soups served in shot glasses and bread
Ham hash cakes with mustard sauce and salad
Fish cakes with salad
Poached salmon with lemon creme fraiche
There was the year MIL brought pate and prawn cocktail knowing fine well I dislike both Angry
Other years we've had nothing and eaten earlier. I'm more likely to do a starter if we have lots of guests although last year it was just us and we had one at DH's request.

No, we have nice warm and cold canapés and a glass of bucks fizz and chat while lunch cooks.

Bumblebee1980a · 02/11/2020 19:24

Oh we have smoked salmon with it too. I think the sauce was Marie rose x

HunterHearstHelmsley · 02/11/2020 19:25

No starters here! Bacon butties in the car on the way to family to deliver presents.

FenellaMaxwell · 02/11/2020 19:25

We do cream cheese and smoked salmon bagels first thing, then exactly the same as bluntness - a load of M&S canapés with snowballs at about 1 and then lunch around 4:30pm with no starter.

I do make lunch for DS though as he’s only 3 and gets hangry. He usually has something like daal and rice or soup and bread and cheese.

No. I just about eat a small main course. Don't have dessert either. Just Yule log in the evening

NatalieH2220 · 02/11/2020 19:27

My husbands tradition has always been to have tomato soup as a starter so this is what we always do now with crusty rolls.

CloudyVanilla · 02/11/2020 19:27

Gosh no not for me I prefer to basically fast but I'll nibble on some chocolates or something in the morning and this year I'm planning on making a toastie so I have a bit more energy and focus for cooking and whatnot :)

sunshineandshowers40 · 02/11/2020 19:27

Yes! Prawns and smoked salmon

IEat · 02/11/2020 19:29

CoronaIsWatching · 02/11/2020 19:31

Scallops

cookiemonster5 · 02/11/2020 19:34

We have 2 courses before the main.

Either prawn cocktail or melon and Parma ham then broth.

Zippy1510 · 02/11/2020 19:35

We do a canapés and champagne a few hours before. Smoked salmon or mackerel pate on blinis, roast figs with prosciutto and goats cheese, homemade crab cakes, black pudding and apple filo parcels, Brie and cranberry fill parcels, baked Camembert with garlic and Rosemary, olives, nuts, veggies.

CarriesFlower82 · 02/11/2020 19:35

No -canapés/nibbles mid afternoon and. late lunch at about 3/4. Washed down with lots of prosecco!

SpookyRhubarbYoghurt · 02/11/2020 19:36

It's just our small family now but we stretch out our christmas lunch. So we have the starters (smoked salmon, brown bread and quails eggs) for breakfast. Then christmas lunch for lunch and then christmas pudding icecream for supper.

I simply can't stomach a three course meal all at once! (Because my portions are way too large).

allthegoodusernameshavegone · 02/11/2020 19:37

Champagne

Woui · 02/11/2020 19:38

We don't eat breakfast
Starter at 12 (pate/prawn and cocktail/melon).

Main at 3 ish and puddings at 7 ish.

orangenasturtium · 02/11/2020 19:40

We do canapes and drinks a couple of hours before dinner. We used to have starters but everyone felt it just ruined their appetite for the turkey and they didn't really enjoy the starter as much as they would normally because they were holding back in anticipation of the main course.

A tray of mixed canapes always looks appealing and feels more special than a starter, in my opinion.

myhobbyisouting · 02/11/2020 19:40

Why is nobody saying "dinner"? 😣

It's a Christmas dinner here! We have a choice of prawn cocktail or soup, then 2 or 3 meats with all the trimmings, then pudding, roulade or cheese 🧀

Trut · 02/11/2020 19:40

Yes we do a plate of nibbles, then a starter and then main, then cheeses, then dessert, followed by coffee and chocolate 😃

So, homemade mezze platter (hummus, tapenade, labneh with beetroot, or some other ottolenghi inspired light thingies) with sparkling wine
Then either a small soup (usually butternut squash) or salad/small tart (e., fig and chestnut) with a dry white
Then the main with veg and trimmings - with a full bodied red
Then cheeses (usually 3, a blue, soft goat’s cheese and something new) with chutneys and crackers -dessert wine
Then something meringuey for dessert as DH loves it (I don’t have a sweet tooth so happy to along with his suggestion) and usually something with fruit and icrecream on the side
Then my fav, coffee and dark raw chocolate

And the stagger to bed 😃

Floralnomad · 02/11/2020 19:42

We do , generally a choice of fish things crab , prawn cocktail or smoked salmon , I prefer starters to dessert anytime of the year .

CosyQueen · 02/11/2020 19:52

We do a proper breakfast as the kids get up so early - so either pigs in blankets sandwiches, or homemade sausage McMuffins or ham and cheese croissants, or sweet pastries and fruit etc (I find if we have a proper breakfast the kids don’t gorge themselves too much on chocolate and sweets as they usually eat so much they make themselves feel sick)

And then we have picky snacks out if anyone wants them.

Then we eat dinner at around 5pm, no starter, just the main roast and then we don’t end up eating desert until the evening as we’re so full.

timeforanewstart · 02/11/2020 19:57

Yes , we normally have more canape type though
Brie & cranberry parcels , little bits like that from m & s

CoronaIsWatching · 02/11/2020 20:02

I just have bacon sandwiches for breakfast, on white bread, with loads of butter and red sauce
