Weighted blankets - experiences please

Am considering getting my DH a weighted blanket for Christmas - he suffers from severe arthritis which leaves him in agony when he wakes in the morning. He also has depression which is exacerbated by the continual pain he is in and his sleep quality is awful because of this. I have read these blankets help with anxiety and depression and help improve sleep which would be brilliant. Does anyone have any experience they could share. I'm hoping this could be the perfect present to help him feel a little better fingers crossed

Mine helps me enormously. I sleep better and feel calm when I’m under it. I feel better the next day too. I would definitely recommend.

GigantosaurusRex · 30/10/2020 19:11

I love mine but DH hates it, he says he can't get comfortable under it.

Lovingtheglitter · 30/10/2020 19:13

I'd like to find out more for my son as he suffers from insomnia - my question though is do they make you hot like a proper blanket?

TheFormerPorpentinaScamander · 30/10/2020 19:13

Absolutely love mine. So does ds. Hence me not having one anymore Grin.
I'm going to make him his own for Christmas.

I got one for my DD who has ADHD and it's lovely. She doesn't sleep using it but she does wrap herself in it when she is relaxing.

notapizzaeater · 30/10/2020 19:20

My teen son loves his - sleeps much better with it.

puellanovella · 30/10/2020 19:25

I love mine and don’t find it at all claustrophobic, just reassuringly weighty. Also keeps the duvet very much on my side of the bed!

BessieSurtees · 30/10/2020 19:36

I have really been wanting to try this but I get hot at night do they make you hotter?

TheFormerPorpentinaScamander · 30/10/2020 19:40

I find mine less hot than a duvet. You can layer it with other blankets and duvet if you need.
Mines a gravity blanket and I got it with the summer cover.

HappySonHappyMum · 30/10/2020 19:54

Well this sounds positive - thanks for the feedback. Do they make you ache in the morning? I presume you can't really move underneath them and they keep you still - does this make you stiff?

I have a grey single one, when I don’t use it I just put it on end of the bed, looks nice. I’ve not washed it yet as worried I will ruin it or the beads will come out and knacker my washing machine.

TheFormerPorpentinaScamander · 30/10/2020 20:23

I can still move under mine (and I'm fat so have a 10kg one). If anything its better than a duvet because it doesn't fall off when I turn over. Although I also found i have to turn over less when I'm using it. It seems to soothe my restless legs.

YuckYuckTea · 30/10/2020 20:23

Which weighted blanket do people recommend?

UndertheCedartree · 30/10/2020 21:57

I have a Koala weighed blanket. The first night I used it I got the best nights sleep in at least 3 years if not longer. Highly reccomend.

UndertheCedartree · 30/10/2020 21:59

I can still move under it - I think if you can't the weight would be too heavy for you.

notapizzaeater · 31/10/2020 00:25

I bought this one

I got Dh one and he was stressed and struggling to turn his brain off to sleep. He initially was skeptical but it works really well for him!

I got a king sized one but with hindsight I wish I'd just got a single as I don't need it and it feels awkward to share.

My son has had episodes of sleep paralysis since he was a child. At 31, his wife bought him a weighted blanket last year, and he has not suffered an episode since.

baumwolle · 31/10/2020 01:01

Gives me sleep paralysis

I had one but the inner weighted bit kept coming loose and bunching up and in the end I couldn’t be bothered with it. It was an expensive one too (can’t remember the name, it was a gift).

Those who love them - does that ever happen with yours: the bunching up and the need to faff around and straighten it inside every bloody night?

If not please tell me the make because I liked the weight!

Mine did that when I first had it, then I realised it has little ties to secure it inside the cover. It's made by Gravity blanket.

To those asking for more info on them, they are meant to be roughly 10% of your body weight and you aren't meant to share them with anyone, so unless you never share your double bed a single sized one is fine. I'd definitely recommend either a removable cover, or buying a cover for it separately as they are too heavy for most washing machines. Some of the cheaper ones don't seem to be a standard size, so buying a cover wouldn't be so easy.

puellanovella · 31/10/2020 08:17

This one after lots of research. It has a cover so washable. The ties inside the cover secure it to the blanket so no bunching.

puellanovella · 31/10/2020 08:42

Sorry HappySon didn’t answer re aching - not at all as I can still move comfortably under it - it’s the equivalent of a big hug! I am not arthiritic though so not qualified on that point - bought mine just for comfort.

I have fibromyalgia and had an accident last year that left me in significant daily pain. The blanket has helped that massively, I get straight out of bed in the morning now and need less immediate painkillers. However - my sleep has been disturbed. I wake a couple of times a night - I think it's when I'm trying to turn over naturally and the blanket restricts that. I go straight back to sleep though. I think they're a highly personal thing and you kind of wont know until you try it.
