Christmas Eve food help

I am embarrassed to say I've never mad much of an effort on Christmas Eve. We've often ended up grazing on a buffet at someone else's house but this year it's going to be different as we'll definitely be at home. I usually focus on Christmas Day cooking but thought it would be really nice to have a Christmassy meal the night before as well as there'll only be four of us. What do you all usually do? All suggestions welcome!

My family (I go back to my mum's for Christmas and my bf goes to his family's) always have a chippy. It basically started as my mum had the kitchen all prepped for the next day and there was no space to cook. Now it's became a nice tradition so we've just stuck with it even if it's a year she's not hosting.

When we used to do a Christmas dinner, Christmas Eve was always a take away or go out to Wetherspoons.

AriettyHomily · 19/10/2020 10:22

I don't know how it started but we always have crispy dick in pancakes from the take away.

AriettyHomily · 19/10/2020 10:23

Oh FFS. DUCK. DUCK. DUCK.

XiCi · 19/10/2020 10:23

We have pasta bake because I can just put it in the oven & get on with any other prep.

Xmas Eve is DH birthday. But we Usually have a pub lunch late afternoon when DH has finished work.

My mum sometimes invites us for a Christmas Eve buffet which is lovely - crudités, dips, mini mince pies, stollen, lemon cake, pate, smoked salmon on baguette and cream cheese, lots of crisps and huge G and Ts with fruit in or prosecco cocktails.
At home we got into a Christmas Eve habit of pulled pork on brioche rolls with coleslaw and sweet potato fries, but now three of us are vegetarian that's not really going to work any more!

My family have had a tradition of a Swiss cheese fondue on Christmas Eve for about 35 years now. If I’m honest I prefer it to Christmas dinner. My DC haven’t quite got the taste for it yet though so we tend to do baked camembert for them but they dip all the same stuff in.

I made a tartiflette for Christmas Eve a few years ago and liked it so much I make it every Christmas Eve. It’s an alpine dish of potatoes, bacon, cream and cheese. I don’t make it any other time (because unless you’ve spent all day burning 5000 calories skiing down mountains it’s probably a bit fattening) so it feels special.

XiCi · 19/10/2020 10:32

What do you use to dip CoffeeChocolateWine.
I've got a fondue set here that I haven't used yet so would like some inspiration to get using it!

I always cook the Christmas ham on Christmas Eve so we have that, usually with egg and chips

Wannatrim · 19/10/2020 10:51

AriettyHomily

Do you deep or shallow fry the dick?

TheCrow · 19/10/2020 10:53

Usually Christmas Eve is when we're allowed to break into all the Christmas food so we have picky tea- Wensleydale with cranberries, nice crackers with pate and onion chutney, posh crisps, cheese straws etc Sometimes I do some gammon with coke in the slow cooker.

rorosemary · 19/10/2020 10:57

Thank you, I needed that laugh 😁😁😁

We have a carpet picnic.

It started one year when I was surrounded by masses of presents that still needed to be wrapped and the OH was 'starving' but the kitchen was full of prep for CD, so he made us a carpet picnic & we watched a film while I wrapped & he cut tape 🤣. & it became a tradition after that, but I TRY to be 'all sorted' so I can enjoy the carpet picnic (that's now a coffee table picnic since my knees gave up) & the film!

Not a hope in hell I'm cooking on Christmas Eve!!

purringpaws · 19/10/2020 11:02

Crisp dick has completely made my morning

thelegohooverer · 19/10/2020 11:05

Keep it simple on Christmas Eve and then Christmas Day is all the more appreciated.

FelicityPike · 19/10/2020 11:07

We don’t do anything out of the ordinary.

Twinkletwinklelittletwat · 19/10/2020 11:14

Crispy dick 😂😂😂

BiddyPop · 19/10/2020 11:15

We do "platter" in this house traditionally. We've spent the afternoon prepping veg etc for following day, and we enjoy a relaxed grazing of various treats. With a nice beverage for everyone - DD enjoys a rare fizzy drink while DH and I open a bottle of wine.

It's not all these things any 1 year - but a nice selection of things, including some salad-y bits, some meat and fish bits, dips, carb, and maybe some hot bits but mostly cold. And always includes taking out at least 1 if not a few cheeses that form the Christmas cheeseboard. There is almost no prep involved - opening packets from the fridge, or maybe chopping a few carrots or peppers into sticks....throwing a pack of sausage rolls into the oven...slicing bread. And while everyone may not like everything on the table, there is always at least a couple of things that are favourites for each person, and plenty that each person will eat (so the formerly olive hating person could enjoy carrot sticks and cherry tomatoes instead and just taste an olive if they wanted but leave it behind if they didn't like it - note the "formerly" … Grin ).

Things like: (And remember - it's a few from each category each year - not everything in any 1 year)
Meat: slices of Parma ham, salami, braseola, cooked ham, spiced beef, pastrami, ….
Fish: salmon, cooked prawns, cooked squid rings, smoked salmon pate...
Pate: (smoked salmon), duck, chicken liver etc (only ever 1 type of pate any year)
Salad: cherry tomatoes, olives, carrot sticks, pepper sticks, salad leaves
Cheese:
Carb: nice crackers (various types), oat cakes, breadsticks, crusty French stick, proper brown soda bread...
Dips: Hummus, salsa, sour cream and chive, guacamole....
Hot: sausage rolls, maybe some seafood bits from M&S, mozzarella sticks, …

Any leftovers are enjoyed over the next few days, so I am not worried about having a good selection.
