ideas for gift for 60 year old MIL

HI

I am wracking my brains trying to think what to get for MIL this year. She is 60, has her own business and is able to buy herself anything she needs.

We usually buy her something related to the kids - and then some alcohol / chocolates and another gift.

But neither DH or I can think of what to get her that isn't the usual scarf/perfume/ornament etc.

So any ideas for quirky presents that no one else might think of?

Thanks a million

Bird feeder for the garden?
Food hamper?

An experience gift? National trust pass? RSPB membership?

Gin making kit?
Mushroom growing kit?

My mum is a similar age and last year I just bought her a hotel chocolate hamper, she loved it and kept thanking me, much better than all the previous gifts I have got her that she never used.

Swell water bottle
Coffee or tea subscription
Digital photo frame
Food flask
Windowsill planter
Candle making kit
Cath Kidston overnight bag
Reading light
Moleskin diary
Spice rack

If she has a garden, could you get her something like a fruit tree (maybe in a large pot) that she could enjoy over the years? I'm thinking a special pear tree or apple tree? Or a pair of bay trees at the front of her house?

Lockdownhairdontcare · 18/10/2020 16:52

Jo Malone candle/hand cream
National trust membership
Luxury alcohol
Outdoor photo shoot with her grandchildren
Night away

micc · 18/10/2020 17:08

Maybe making her a hamper from local shops ? :)

bigchris · 18/10/2020 17:09

M and s are doing a snow globe bottle of gin which makes a lovely gift

myhobbyisouting · 18/10/2020 19:45

Christmas wreath making class at a nice florist along with you/DH

AuntieMarys · 18/10/2020 19:56

I'm glad no one has suggested a scarf!
I'm 60 and would welcome
Good gin
A voucher for the Ivy
Clarins shower gel ( yellow)
Books ( from my list)
Cheese hamper
Neom candle/ diffuser
Hotel chocolat peanut butter truffles
I'd hate anything for the garden. Or handmade.

FinallyHere · 18/10/2020 19:56

That's my age group. I too buy myself anything I want

my major desire for presents is to for 'nothing that needs to be dusted. '. A nice bottle, a delicious box of chocolate, small enough to be eaten without guilt.

It's kind of you to look for something but honestly there isn't anything I need or really want. Something small and beautifully wrapped is perfect.

FuzzyPenguin · 18/10/2020 19:58

My mum is the same age she has asked for the cath kidston advent calendar

Other hits have been
Radley signature bag
Posh slippers
Basically more expensive version of things she would normally buy

OhTheRoses · 18/10/2020 20:07

I'm 60:

Divine candle
Silk face mask or pillowcase
Neom stuff
Beautiful hand cream
L'Occitane bath stuff
Quality make-up bag
Moleskin notebook
Lovely pen
Fortnums truffles
Simple silver earrings
Gorgeous Christmas bouquet

thelegohooverer · 18/10/2020 20:29

A bottle of Champagne and a box of Ladurée macarons

midnightgrace · 18/10/2020 20:31

Another 60 year old here too who buys what she wants.
I'd like for Christmas
Cashmere anything - hat, gloves, socks, etc
A Smythson diary
Champagne Truffles
Chanel Gabrielle foaming shower gel
Good quality candle - Diptyque, Neom, Jo Malone
Chanel hair mist
A novel

Quality over quantity.

PERFUME
It is still something I struggle to buy for myself.

RockingMyFiftiesNot · 18/10/2020 21:03

Almost 60, feel like 16 and really wouldn't thank you for a bird feeder which seems to be the standard suggestion on here for anyone over 50 (we do feed the birds and have several feeders already!)

I'd appreciate any gift and would be very happy with gin (even if that's what you buy me every year!) or toiletries (Elemis or Philosophy are quite pricey but lovely).

RockingMyFiftiesNot · 18/10/2020 21:04

*appreciate any gift - apart from a bird feeder !

Skyla2005 · 18/10/2020 21:09

A scentsy lamp with wax melts. It’s the nicest present I’ve been bought

FredaFrogspawn · 18/10/2020 21:13

Lots of amazing ideas here. I can only hope you are my daughter in law.

katy1213 · 18/10/2020 21:33

Also over 60. Please, nothing that qualifies as 'stuff,' no novelty items or ornaments. No kits - nothing that requires any aftercare on my part - and the bird feeder, thanks very much, can wait until I'm 90 with the bedsocks.
I'd be very happy with whisky, Diptyque candles, perfume (but I have expensive taste!), Moleskine diary, cashmere jumper, Fortnum's chocolates or glacé fruits, Paxton&Whitfield cheese, flowers, books if you're a good chooser but not if it's going to be something off the Booker list that I won't bother reading. Interesting cookery books (but absolutely no celebrity cooks - no Nigellas/Jamies/Nadiyas/no vegan girls with flicky hair and absolutely nothing to do with Bake Off!). Slightly Foxed subscription would be brilliant.
Definitely quality over quantity. A tiny bar of beautiful chocolate is much nicer than a huge box of Thorntons.

Nanasueathome · 18/10/2020 21:34

Daylesford Hamper?

katy1213 · 18/10/2020 21:38

I've just seen the suggestion of a spice rack. Please, just because we can remember the 1970s, doesn't mean we want to re-live them.

halcyondays · 18/10/2020 21:38

By the time you are 60 or even 40 you probably have more than enough ornaments, scarves etc. Most people would probably prefer things that can be used up like food and drink or toiletries.
