ideas for gift for 60 year old MIL

HI

I am wracking my brains trying to think what to get for MIL this year. She is 60, has her own business and is able to buy herself anything she needs.

We usually buy her something related to the kids - and then some alcohol / chocolates and another gift.

But neither DH or I can think of what to get her that isn't the usual scarf/perfume/ornament etc.

So any ideas for quirky presents that no one else might think of?

Thanks a million

Having said nothing that requires any in-put from me, I would be thrilled with a sourdough/doughnuts/Scandi workshop from Bread Ahead. Now I've thought of it, I might have to treat myself.

I'm nearly 60, and I really don't want an experience, a voucher, a kit, a lesson, a show, tickets, books I haven't asked for, anything from M&S, anything that smells, or anything endorsed or produced by a celebrity.

I'd like some better speakers for my PC, a Viz Comic, and some chocolate that doesn't taste rank.

And world peace.

Svalberg · 18/10/2020 22:18

I've been given books recently, not read any of them, I prefer to have them on my kindle. I'd agree with many PPs, something that doesn't take up houseroom permanently please.

@Skyla2005 scentsy are MLM

RockingMyFiftiesNot · 19/10/2020 07:58

@gonerogue glad that lots of people your MIL's agg G's age have posted - and seem to be saying pretty much the same thing. Have you asked your MIL? Who knows, she might want a bird feeder or a spice rack. But unless specifically asked for, would go with something that can be used up (toiletries, chocolate, alcohol, fine foods) or where more won't matter (shrubs/planters) - although some people are more fussy than I am about what goes in their garden!

MyBowelsMatch · 19/10/2020 08:09

I would stay well away from Biscuiteers. I had a delivery and the biscuits were very soft, obviously some air had got in to the packaging.
When I contacted their customer service people I was basically told that no, their biscuits are perfect!!! in other words they nearly said “How dare you criticise our product??!!!” Honestly I’ve never had such arrogance from a company. Steer clear!

MyBowelsMatch · 19/10/2020 08:10

Oops wrong thread!!

gonerogue · 19/10/2020 09:05

Wow so many suggestions thank you all so much.

Her partner is a horticulturalist - I'd nearly be afraid to buy a plant because they have so many already. Ditto on the bird feeders etc.

We have asked her but got the "Don't be spending your money on me" answer. I always think we are going to buy you something so it might be nice to get something you want but anyway.

I'll compile the list from here and see what DH thinks - he was as stumped as I was so this is fantastic to have so much great feedback. Thank you all - and for those of you who have put your lists on here I hope your families read them :-)

I am a similar age. A couple of years ago my son bought me this and I absolutely loved it...

Thank you, my family is all of like mind so Christmas presents are all under control.

DH's now, a bit of a different question. I'm hoping Covid is going to deliver on its promise to make some changes in that department. [evil grin]

MrsHSW · 24/10/2020 18:22

We tend to get MIL stuff like:
Cashmere jumper, gloves, scarf
Silk PJs
Slippers
Mascara
Handbag
Jewellery she has picked herself
Books
Fabric (her hobbies is sewing)
Sewing lessons
Dog themed notebook
Posh bedding

CovidClara · 24/10/2020 23:19

If someone says don't buy anything then respect it. That is the ultimate gift.

I don't want or need anything. I hate that people waste their money on me

but particularly no:
Bedsocks (not in a care home)
Fingerless gloves (not auditioning for Oliver)
Wrist warmers (WTF_enough said)
Handcream- see previous care home comments
Scarf - just why?
Slippers-not 90 and not in a care home
Afternoon tea- not age 6 or 108

I am 60 (I work full time have children in their early 20's, go on holiday, dance, laugh..) and must admit I cringe at threads which start ..what do I buy a 60yr old?..as if we are suddenly at a stage in our lives when we need specific gifts ..biscuits, scarves, something for the garden...please buy me something nice, maybe something a bit luxurious..just like you would someone who is 50 or 40....Apologies if my response is a bit AIBU ..so get me something cashmere, expensive, fragrant..

JamieLeeCurtains · 25/10/2020 00:55

I want a Banksy stencil on the front of my house.

fantasmasgoria1 · 25/10/2020 01:06

My ndn is 82 and would not thank you for the stuff on her. Why is it always cashmere, candles, bubble bath, scarves etc. It's like when people ask about what to buy for a 16 year old girl. Hot chocolate is always on the list. Hot chocolate is an item such as tea and coffee and I never had it fit Christmas neither did any 16 year old I have known.

JamieLeeCurtains · 25/10/2020 01:18

And it's always 'a lovely scarf' suggested, like anyone would go to all effort of asking and then going and buying a really shit one.

I always imagine A Lovely Scarf! being said by Mrs Doyle. Mind you, she'd love that from the Fathers.

Yes, get a sachet of options, stick it in a cheap mug with marshmallows and it becomes a gift

Any consumable food that you have in the house on a daily basis is not suitable for a gift.

Anordinarymum · 26/10/2020 00:14

As someone well over 60 I would say do not buy me anything that would benefit other people in the house. Make any gift personal for me to pamper myself.

I love anything that smells nice, from candles to lotions to perfume and I like things to give myself a pedicure.I love really nice pyjamas, and decent chocolates and I am a fan of decent gin.

I would not appreciate biscuits unless they were florentines.

Thank you

Nanasueathome · 27/10/2020 15:45

I’m over 60

My list:
Neom wellness pod
Daylesford Pimlico Hamper
Anything from the Bamford skincare range

snowspider · 27/10/2020 16:26

I think knowing the person is essential for good present buying or making. I would love bedsocks, hate a spa pampering experience, hate silk pyjamas, no make up thank you.

On my list
a nail gun
a practical denim or heavy cotton apron with a big pocket
a quad bike
any interesting old or new cookery books not celebrity supermarket fodder
a rotovator
a hand forged weather vane
noise cancelling head phones
an SUP
French olive traditional soap
cheese
a garden table in chunky wood eg scaffold boards
a huge wooden frame with a nest swing that will take adults
wooden garden gates
sheepskins
hand blown glass baubles
original Lino cut prints
head torch
carpet for the bell tent
Moomin merchandise
Tove Jansson biography
Laugharne weekend tickets

We’ve bought MIL a bigger magnifying mirror with USB lights for doing her make up this year.

Previously we’ve bought; handbags, Amazon vouchers, a bracelet and a flat cap (for when she goes walking)
