Hi all

I'm wondering what you have as a table centre piece.

I'm thinking of get twigs from the forest and spraying them then adding mini baubles,

Is it OK to have a different colour theme in the living room and kitchen?

My perspective around decorations and colour schemes is that you should go with whatever you love and not worry about hard and fast rules.

We do exactly what you've described as a centre piece the last couple of years and it looks good. I like it because it doesn't take up too much of the table.

HelloDulling · 11/10/2020 18:12

My table is long. Down the middle I have various little clear vases with sprigs of eucalyptus, and then 3 brass and glass lanterns for white pillar candles. The table cloth is a natural linen, the napkins are berry red. I’d really like brass coloured cutlery!

This is the thread I've been waiting for!

I always seem to end up putting things out which are too tall and then get in the way as we spend the meal looking at a eucalyptus sprig.

BunTooti · 11/10/2020 19:06

Hi OP, do you have a pic of what you mean? I'm needing a centre piece and I have twigs Grin .

My vases are maybe 3 inches tall, with 5 inch pieces of eucalyptus. Even I can see over them.

I generally end up with a lumpen mass of pine, ivy and holly branches with dried orange slices, plastic holly berries (my holly loses all its berries in november) and cinnamon sticks randomly shoved in it. I love eucalyptus, so much so that I planted a eucalyptus tree in our old garden just for christmas, but we've moved now. It's a clumsy, unartistic mess but I can't seem to make it look any daintier.

I love a table centre piece.

We have a rather compact house and the dining room is also the entrance hall and leads to semi open kitchen one side, stairs up and lounge to the other. For us having an element of flow in the colour design helps stop make the space feel more homogenous.

I don't think everything needs to be matchy matchy but in our smaller space if the main element was twigs and baubles in the dining room I might use twigs and red/ green airplants in the lounge.

This year I'm thinking about creating Autumn table arrangements for the dining room and big coffee table in the lounge, using some very large but fairly low planted vases with pebbles, small chunk of bark, small ferns, the odd air plant (current fasination) some moss and mini fir cones. Just before xmas adding mini baubles to make it all rather festive.

I've got a few clear chunky glass vases that would fit the bill and one of the things I love is they can be left on the table during food as wooden boards can be put on the top like a lid and they create a raised platter effect and more space on our modest table for plates/ drinks/ cuttlery

AdaColeman · 11/10/2020 19:36

I often have a large glass bowl filled with glass baubles and satin ribbon, or a large plate with oranges 🍊🍊 🍊 🍊and their leaves and gold chocolate coins, or a glass cake stand with iced star biscuits, sugared almonds & chocolate coins piled on it.

RippleEffects · 11/10/2020 20:45

@AdaColeman I love the big plate idea. It'd have to be chocolate oranges though, with the chocolate coins and a bit of something green to vary the colour.

Short glass vase (ikea £2.50) with gold pillar candle, eucalyptus leaves and battery fairy lights. Single or several, depending on table length

I have a vase similar to the pp and fill it with baubles that match whats on the tree.
Tried it last year for the first time and it was really effective.

thelegohooverer · 11/10/2020 23:16

My table is too narrow for a centrepiece so I have a couple of tall glass candlesticks and pillar candles and I have pine fronds, bits of random greenery and sprays of pearls draped artfully hanging messily out of them.

I really like the chunky glass vases/boards idea. I might have a root in the attic and see if I have something suitable.

2020hello · 13/10/2020 21:50

@BunTooti kind of like this, I'm not sure if I should spray the twigs a colour though. Or if it will look ok? Mine probably won't look like the pictures lol.

Just catching up on the responses 😊

Im not thinking maybe this would be too big for xmas day but maybe it could be the festive touch through December?

We have red gold and green on the xmas tree but I was thinking could I get away with silver and pinks in the dining room? Or silver and red .. oh I cant decide

I'm liking the board idea I have a few mini glass fish bowl type things in the garage maybe I can did them out.

The eucalyptus people have is that generally fake from the shops or real from a garden centre?

thelegohooverer · 13/10/2020 21:59

They’re lovely @2020hello. Reminds me I have some twisty willow twigs mouldering in the attic somewhere. I might see if I can find them and experiment.
Both those pictures have the vase on bare dark wood tables so the brown looks good. Might be better sprayed white if it’s on a table cloth or runner.

nancybotwinbloom · 13/10/2020 22:21

I'm going to make one too op.

I'm going to wind wire in a circle and weave in holly, pine cones and baubles.

I made a wreath for the fire last year and it lasted the full month.

Go for it. It's easy but prickly.

2020hello · 13/10/2020 22:26

Oo thats another thing I may have no table cloth. I love my table but its covered because the kids spill everything so I think I will have it natural for xmas day.

Thats a good idea @nancybotwinbloom with the wire to add other bits in.

Do we think lights in the vase or wrapped around branches?

OP posts:
nancybotwinbloom · 13/10/2020 22:31

Both!

nancybotwinbloom · 13/10/2020 22:35

We collected some pine cones this year so we will glitter them.

Something for the kids to do to help then you just wind them in. Or zip tie them.

The baubles I hook on so you can change the colour of you get new decorations

The lights, I usually get battery ones and wind the over.

It's dead easy.

You can get cheap bits from Amazon.

Or eBay. The garlands you can get from both if you don't want to prick yourself.

I'm doing that this year so I can keep them

AdaColeman · 13/10/2020 23:15

I agree pine cones can be look effective, I especially like them when combined with nuts in their shells, some highlighted with gold wax perhaps.

DENMAN03 · 13/10/2020 23:35

I have very tall vases with flowers and candles.. they are approx 50cm high so are above your head when seated so you can still see people. I change the colour scheme each year. I then have smaller candles and a runner in the centre..like so...

So, to all you good people who have lovely centrepieces, what do you do on Christmas Day? I have about 10 platters and dishes on my table for self serving so nowhere to put a centrepiece. My sideboard holds my cards received.

TrickyD · 14/10/2020 10:54

We bring in two long garden tables to accommodate all the family. As they are quite narrow table decs consist of tall candles or smaller ones with some greenery around them. As we have this meal in the evening candles make sense.

The rate covid rules are going, rather than the usual festive dinner, DH and I could be sitting alone on the sofa watching TV,

meal on lap.

I would move the cards, tbh. A sideboard makes a perfect serving area...

Could you string the cards up instead? Or is there anywhere else in the house where they could go for the day?
