Card games for student - Not Cards Against Humanity b

Hi I want to send a little something to a student relative who is stuck in halls. Was thinking something he and pals could play as they have apparently been enjoying brutal games of Uno. Not Cards against Humanity as potentially offensive. Don't know if there are any Top Trumps that are 'in' for young adults? Or similar games?
Posting in Christmas for traffic plus responses might help others trying To buy for this difficult age group.

Any Big Potato games. They do other versions of Uno - such as Dos, Uno Flip. Exploding Kittens and Sushi Go also good.

Ghouliet · 03/10/2020 19:01

Exploding Kittens!

You can add the expansion packs of Imploding kittens and Streaking kittens.

Careylisa · 03/10/2020 19:05

Blockbusters as in the video shop, you can get it from Argos or amazon along with other places. I have bought it for young and old and it goes down a storm! One of the best board games I've done in a long time. Highly recommend for anyone, it's hilarious and challenging!!

imnotalpharius · 03/10/2020 19:07

Another vote for exploding kittens. Bear Vs babies is great as well, as is You've got Crabs.
Unstable unicorns and the Llama version are fun.
Munchkin is great and there are sooooo many versions you can really tailor it for someone.

Evil baby orphanage is good but some might find it offensive.

Resistance / Avalon - card game version of Mafia / Werewolf. I’ve heard good things about Chameleon too.

bestbefore · 03/10/2020 19:08

Uno Dos def, it's the same as uno but with a "dark side"'twist - loads of fun

EnglishRose1320 · 03/10/2020 19:08

Not the cheapest game out there but one of the best card games we've played recently was cast quest. Brilliant for fans of big potato games, similar feel. Easy to pick and a total laugh to play.

Wow so many suggestions, will definitely be able to find something I there and maybe some stocking fillers for my own family - many thanks all.

Another vote for Exploding Kittens.

XiCi · 03/10/2020 22:22

There is absolutely no way a student and their mates would find CAH offensive. I've played it with my 75 year old parents!! Some of the games mentioned here are for 6 year olds and there is no way I'd have played them as an 18 yr old student.

Brutal games of Uno Uno really made me laugh though. Things must have really changed since I was a student Grin

DilysPrice · 03/10/2020 22:27

Exploding Kittens and Fluxx are simple and crowd pleasing. Werewolf is good but you don’t really need cards to play it - you just need to know the rules.

PurpleDaisies · 03/10/2020 22:33

Hanabi is collaborative and great fun.
Also love letters (despite the name).

GetRid · 03/10/2020 22:38

How about going retro and sending a pack of traditional playing cards alongside a little beginners guide to card games type book? Rummy, whist, poker etc are some of the best games ever

Couchpotato3 · 03/10/2020 22:42

Killer Bunnies (lots of expansion packs for future presents if they like it)

Definitely agree with this. You can get Texas hold em box sets with the cards, chips etc

TrickyD · 03/10/2020 23:05

Double
RatatatCat - very popular here

I have googled Fluxx, thanks to this thread, and bought it for us to play at home.

30under · 03/10/2020 23:07

Monopoly Deal is my go to card game - and I have been a big fan of Uno for decades!

Not all students are the same.

Bears vs babies
You’ve got crabs
Exploding kittens, all are great games and not offensive.
Also you can get a family version of cards against humanity.

MarkRuffaloCrumble · 03/10/2020 23:51

My 20 y/o won’t play CAH either, although it was a revelation playing with a 95 year old relative once Grin

One game that I bought which brought us all to tears of laughter was Soundiculous. It’s a very simple concept, a pile of cards which have ‘sounds’ on them, ranging in difficulty, and a bit like charades, you have to make the noise and everyone else guesses what you’re supposed to be. Another similar idea is Accentuate, where you have to say a film quote in a certain accent and you have to guess the accent and the film.

I guess it may be awkward playing games like that with new people that you want to impress, but if they have access to alcohol they’ll be fine Grin

TheFormerPorpentinaScamander · 03/10/2020 23:59

We love Uno, dos, uno flip, monopoly deal, unstable unicorns and good old fashioned card games here. DS1 also likes exploding kittens. We're also massive CAH fans

jcurve · 04/10/2020 00:04

Another vote for Phase 10.

MarkRuffaloCrumble · 04/10/2020 00:31

Another fun one was Bounce Off - you have to bounce ping pong balls into a specific pattern. My DCs ended up playing it using their feet instead of hands at one point Grin
