DS is getting a 10 year old Wii to play Mario.
DD doesn't play much on the tablet anyway. She still plays a lot of pretend. She has a Lottie doll so we'll probably get some bits for that. She has exactly one Playmobil set and I don't think we'll really start collecting that. She is more likely to put Lego together than DS is but she can't manage a really big one and she'd rather have something she can play with as well.
Also we are travelling so no play kitchens etc (she's a bit old for that anyway).

The Learning Resources School Set is also a big hit with her.

drspouse · 28/09/2020 12:28

When you say pretend play do you mean dressing up rather than small world stuff?
Dressing up, and creating a bedroom/hospital ward/school for her teddies, and running around madly with her brother being kittens/puppies/superheroes.

I know that the toy manufacturers benefit by having the "basic kit plus 67 million extensions" but for the sake of our house, budget, and the planet we don't really want to start collecting a new construction kit/pretend world.

So it sounds like Lottie and Lego are going to work, plus some activity related things/puzzles/games. We also like Dobble!

DD2 only plays with dolls and teddies and as you say there's only so many you need. We've ended up buying some ridiculous overpriced talking dolls the last year or so otherwise she would have had nothing else to open. We've got loads of dressing up stuff and they will just wrap a ribbon round themselves and pretend it's 101 different things. I'm seriously considering wrapping up stuff they already own this year!

icedaisy · 28/09/2020 12:46

What outdoors stuff does she have or like? I'm not sure if you mean travelling for Christmas or generally and how far? Covid permitting.

Was thinking along lines of scooter, hover board, or something cool for garden that gives play life when you get home, assuming you are going home and not travelling like round the world.

So maybe a ew smaller gifts to open on day but pictures, videos of a garden play set, swings, play house etc for when she returns?

drspouse · 28/09/2020 12:59

We don't have room for anything else in the garden but we are driving to stay in a cottage near my mum's so if we did want to get a scooter we'd probably get it delivered to hers. But she just learned to love her bike so probably not.

What about a vet kit- get a real stethoscope and some tubing bandages, calpol syringes, empty medicine bottle, some fake pills (m and ms) a thermometer, a dentist set with wee mirror etc and put them in a nice case or bag. Then a cuddly toy animal and a small real pet carrier. Great bundle of stuff that won’t take up too much room and maybe you could get a puppy soft toy to help offset the fear of dogs?

NationalShiteYear · 28/09/2020 13:27

My 6yo DD has requested a Tonie box which we're really not keen on due to cost/add ons but shes been asking for it all year and you can record own stories etc. Can get them second hand occasionally.

Also the vtech camera which is sometimes on offer in Costco.

Spirograph has been a huge hit, as has the compendium of games you can get from argos. If you like dobble then ghost blitz is a good next step.

It appears that you've shot most people's suggestions down in flames so I'm pretty confused as to why you posted in the first place

I've had about 20 ideas and I need about 3. I've said which ones we are likely to get.

Would you rather I lied and said I'm going to buy them all? Or gave an idea of which ones are good for us?

I really don't get this about MN. Nobody can possibly use all the suggestions they get on a thread. Do they have to pretend they will?

It's like saying "what are your favourites for kids tea" and you get 30 ideas and you say "ooh those 5 are great, I'll try them" - if you've said "oh dear, I did try scrambled eggs a few weeks ago and it wasn't popular" should people then say "I don't know why you bothered asking"?

That looks good!

How about one of those colour-in pillow case sets, if you're travelling? Shouldn't take up much space. Also, and I appreciate that they are hideous (and plastic), but my DD and her friends have spent HOURS over the years playing various pretend games with Shopkins - and they are small...

Doll and pram
Barbies

Small teddies, my 7 yr old DD plays all sorts of games for hours with her weird and wonderful collection of teddies - from camping adventures to school to parties to space camp!

And you could get some different accessories to go with them- a tea set, a drs set, a tool set etc.

myhobbyisouting · 29/09/2020 01:41

My son likes his teacher play set. It's in an a4 sized bag but he can set up his own school and class and it's all wipe clean to be used again.

Dobble are bringing out a new game this Christmas as you said you liked that.

Check out treasuretrails.co.uk These are really fun for everyone. They take around 2/3 hours and you can get them all over the country.

Baking kits. There's a baked in cinnamon bun kit that keeps dropping to £3 on amazon and looks good.

Brio builder. It’s wooden With plastic bolts, they do about 4 different sized sets. One has a motor. I have three children aged 7, 4 and 4. Different interests and brio builder is the most popular toy in our house. They build the usual stuff, cars, animals but then started making fishing rods, camping stoves, robots Etc. I’m always finding little wooden creations!

Thank you for the Kapla suggestion I’m going to look at that for one of my twins (the one I was struggling for ideas for). She loves small toys and creating.

Mumof1I · 29/09/2020 07:16

Hamma beads or aquabeads. Both popular with my 6 yesr old

ellentree · 29/09/2020 12:54

My 6 year old like Monopoly Deal and I have ordered this LEGO Gear Bots set as well as the Friends hospital: LEGO dots look good too I thought.

She is getting the Believe it or Not book and a magazine (which does have some plastic tat but she loves them and only get 2 a year!).

She is also getting various other things but they can't be played with on the day
