Main/play on the day present for DD age 6

DS is getting a 10 year old Wii to play Mario.
DD doesn't play much on the tablet anyway. She still plays a lot of pretend. She has a Lottie doll so we'll probably get some bits for that. She has exactly one Playmobil set and I don't think we'll really start collecting that. She is more likely to put Lego together than DS is but she can't manage a really big one and she'd rather have something she can play with as well.
Also we are travelling so no play kitchens etc (she's a bit old for that anyway).

We have way too much stuff! I got a marble run for a big birthday a few years ago and DS got a domino run but DD is the one that plays with it.
Puzzle from a relative would be good. She got a Lego Classic set last year.

(She likes listening to stories but isn't really into music. DS has a Google Mini but we're holding off for her getting something like that)

Why don't you want to buy more playmobil or a toy like sylvanians? Is it an issue of space? If so I would have a clear out of toys that no longer get used. Both of the above are excellent toys, especially for children who like to play prenetnd, and your daughter is a great age for introducing them.

Also, and this might be a really daft question, have you asked her what she'd like?

Hazelnutlatteplease · 28/09/2020 08:08

Colour in cardboard play house from hobby craft.
Board game like Carcassonne
Scooter
Comic books of classic novels
(I'd get her the tablet and an audible membership personally)

Whathappenedtothelego · 28/09/2020 08:08

I'd get a second Lottie doll - much more fun to have two and act out conversations. And like pp have said, maybe a horse or other pet to go with it.

GinAtMerlottes · 28/09/2020 08:17

I saw a funlockets secret diary on tv the other day, probably a dreadful piece of tat but something I would have loved when I was 6!

drspouse · 28/09/2020 08:24

I just don't want to start a new collection of plastic stuff. They use most things we have - we're just getting rid of some of the wooden play animals, and they still use the Fisher Price Little People.
I suspect things like funlockets would last 5 minutes - we don't really go in for extra things to "bulk out a pile" especially if plastic and if we have to take them in the car!

She'd love that! If only we weren't going in the car!

What about a Tonie box, if she is into audio stories? Good for travel too. You can buy it from lots of ethical sites like Little Whispers.

I got my dd who was 6 last Christmas a Leapfrog Rock It Twist which is a handheld game with interactive controls, I wanted her to have something to entertain her on long journeys that wasn't a tablet. They are pretty good because they hold their battery for a long time compared to a tablet and aren't as addictive in my experience.

I got my dd a children's camera for her 7th birthday (Victure) and she actually said it was her favourite present, I wish I'd got one when she was a bit younger, another good idea perhaps if you are travelling?

Otherwise is she into baby dolls? That's all my 7 year old really plays with tots wise since she was 4, Baby Born is her favourite and is hardy for travelling, just hard bodied and can get wet so ours has been on planes/trains/boats/pools/beaches. They've just bought out a smaller size Baby Born which might be more practical.

@SoUtterlyGroundDown

I just don't want to start a new collection of plastic stuff

What would she like?

She has no idea. She always asks for chocolate coins from FC. She doesn't play that much with her one Playmobil set so there seems little point in expanding something she doesn't use just to get lost/trodden on/go into landfill. And as her parent I get a say. She won't be getting makeup even if she wants it. When Playboy bunnies were on every 8 year old's pencil case she wouldn't have had that. I think a new collection of plastic things is an unsuitable present.

Gosh I must have missed the playboy bunny phase, I don’t know any young children who had that on a pencil case.
I just meant have you asked her what she wants. My 6 year old has asked for books. Books she will get!
She also got the Rockit Twist last Christmas that a PP has mentioned and that went down well.
After reading this thread I’m considering getting her a camera. Oh and I’ve just remembered I was planning to get her and her sister binoculars this year.

GinAtMerlottes · 28/09/2020 08:47

That’s a bit rude OP. I’m not one to bulk out piles either, I’m not sure why you felt the need to make that judgement. I would have liked the diary, as would my nieces and I would
feel perfectly happy to give that as a main/play on the day present. If it’s not your/your daughters thing then no problem but why the dig about piles?

Anyway, I hope she gets something she likes.

I assumed you meant as an extra as it didn't sound like it had enough play value to have as a main present.

I have! She's no help!
She would ask for a teddy too but that's not really a play all day present either.

mogtheexcellent · 28/09/2020 08:57

My DD sounds very similar to your. She wends her own way as well.

We may upgrade her scooter as it's a hand me down. Other than that she has a new lottie doll and a lego dots set. Shes an only child so no comparisons on presents and she tends to ask FC for teeny things like glue and a new purse.

Family usually buy her lottie accessories and dress up clothes, soft toys, dvds etc (she is also how to train your dragon obsessed). She does ballet and tap so bits to do with dancing like new bag for her shoes are on the list this year. And she can never have too many books.

drspouse · 28/09/2020 09:00

Ooh for relatives ballet stuff would be good and not forgetting Beavers stuff!
DD can't read very well yet but we got her a Willoughby Books subscription last year and she liked all the picture books/having them read to her.

OP posts:
balloonbasket · 28/09/2020 09:14

Why don't you get her a Lego set but prebuild it before so she can play with it on Christmas morning?

mogtheexcellent · 28/09/2020 09:15

If it helps. Dd would totally play all day with a teddy. She has a good imagination.

drspouse · 28/09/2020 09:28

(I keep saying "for relatives" not because we don't want to buy her extras but because we have a singularly useless set of relatives who have come up with the most strange set of presents. Who could forget the history book in another language with a signature to my DN still inside...)

I think she'd love to build it with us too. She's liking helping me with my Dr Who set!

I do think 6 is a tricky age.

Does she have magformers? They seem universally popular. You do need quite a lot though (eg enough to make a house for the lottie doll). There are generics for about half the price which work very well.

trilbydoll · 28/09/2020 09:42

When you say pretend play do you mean dressing up rather than small world stuff? A dressing up outfit with related bits like a dr outfit and medical kit? Or an age appropriate magic set so she can do tricks for you all?

JinglesWish · 28/09/2020 09:44

How about Elsa’s castle? I’d love either of my boys to love the Frozen Lego castle as I want it for me 😆

Justguessing · 28/09/2020 10:20

My six year old plays loads with:

Lego (bricks rather than sets)
Dobble
LED drawing tablet
Dolls (Our Generation, Barbie type dolls, Baby Annabel)

She's getting a Kidizoom Studio for Christmas.
