Doesnt play sport or computer games, no interest in fashion.

He likes science, plants, things to do with the environment, anything of a factual nature..

I'm looking for little bits and pieces.

Any ideas appreciated!!

rbe78 · 24/09/2020 13:40

What about rex London - they often have nice little bits.

Plant theatre kit www.plant-theatre.co.uk/catalog/category/view/s/seed-kits/id/33/

Sounds similar to DS2 who is 13 except he’s into maps not plants!

Maze ball/cube
Glasses cleaning tongs (if he wears glasses)
Science of the movies book
Grow your own Venus fly trap
Lego architecture- eg London skyline

My science mad DS loved the stuff from educational toy shop Bright Minds, although they are mostly for younger children, they do have a few things for teens.

The Science Museum usually has small stocking filler gifts nearer to Christmas e.g. grow a crystal Christmas Tree. Museum shops are always a good place to look, most of them are online e.g. Natural History Museum, Wellcome Collection, Bodleian Library, Kew Gardens. They are also good for book recommendations.

I always buy up the Mensa puzzle cards and other quiz card games in the January sales for after dinner games at Christmas. They are a bit overpriced but they are usually reduced in the week before Christmas (Waitrose and John Lewis sell them).

Unusual seeds could be fun - black tomatoes, purple carrots, strawberry spinach, cucamelon, venus fly traps, a square tomato kit or a miracle berry plant (they make sour things taste sweet after you have eaten one). Or a packet of dried miracle berries.

Kit to make his own terrarium
My youngest did a course at wisley on it (which has a fantastic shop full of tiny house plants), they used an Ikea jar (I’ll pop a link to it when I’m home)
You could make two one for shadey plants and one with a grow light for sunshine desert plants
You could also get tiny railway people (I highly recommend the flasher one and the granny hitting a mugger) for the terrarium.

Does he follow james wong on instagram? He’s got some great living walls and coffee tables. There may be some ideas on there.

Tinkercrate subscriptions are great as well. But nothing to unwrap on the day

MojoJojo71 · 24/09/2020 14:17

Sounds similar to my son at that age. Things that went down well with him were a telescope, a New scientist subscription and a ‘zookeeper for the day’ experience

orangenasturtium · 24/09/2020 14:18

There are some fun Christmas Science books like The Indisputable Existence of Santa Claus by Fry & Evans (maths) or Can Reindeer Fly?: The Science of Christmas by Roger Highfield.

orangenasturtium · 24/09/2020 14:18

Lockpicking kits are fun too.

Magic things. My 13 year old nephew loves learning how to do magic tricks, has special cards, follows loads of famous magicians who do YouTube lessons etc.

He has made a few terrariums with some jars, what a great idea to get some little people or characters to put in them. It's so nice to see there are children with similar interests. He hasn't met any his age at school :-(

If he’s into maps then there are some lovely books around. DS likes Prisoners of Geography at the moment but has loads of different map books, some gorgeously illustrated ones, some of imaginary maps like lord lf the rings and other maps form made up films/books.
He has ‘transit maps of the world’ which he saw in a bookshop once and nearly wet himself he was so excited as he never knew it existed! He was about 8 at the time. It’s one of his favourites.

Microscope, chemistry set,

IHateCoronavirus · 24/09/2020 14:37

Mine loved the Lego architecture and a Newton’s cradle.

Howmanysleepsnow · 24/09/2020 14:37

An ant farm? (Get the ants mail order too)
A nest box and camera?
Binoculars?
Hedgehog house?
Night vision video camera for the garden?
A bat detector?
IQ games?

Howmanysleepsnow · 24/09/2020 14:38

Or this book?

Picture of the inside of the book. It’s surprisingly addictive!
