My niece has just started her first teaching job. The last few years I've made her a Christmas stocking as they don't do them at her home and she liked the idea of it - and has asked me to continue. Was wondering if there are a few bits I could add in that would be helpful for work? She has tons of pens / nice pencil case/ note book/diary/water bottle already. Maybe if you're a teacher you've found something useful that a non- teacher like me wouldn't think about.

A flask and a food flask to keep tea and lunches warm now that staff rooms are out of use due to covid.
Stickers for copy books / children.
Blocks of post its
Travel mug with screw top lid (personalised with Ms X even better!)
Decent sized strong multi-purpose bag to lug copies and resources in and out of school. I like the sturdy jute bags for life. Used to love when tesco did a novelty one.
Puppets for teaching (you can never have enough puppets!) Ikea do very reasonably priced ones.
When I got my first permanent job I treated myself to a personalised self inking stamper for copybooks, think superstickers.com do them
All of the pens!

Alcohol. Lots of alcohol 😁

BaublesAndGlitter · 22/09/2020 09:59

Through has it. When DH qualified I bought him a satchel, a glass engraved with his name on one side and 'I've had a bad day' on the other and a bottle of whiskey. All got a lot of use that first year Xmas Grin

Very warm gloves/hat/scarf for playground duty.

surreygirl1987 · 22/09/2020 12:52

Agree with bento box and travel mug. Also maybe a lanyard with a hand sanitizer squeezy thing attached to it?

Sawyersfishbiscuits · 22/09/2020 13:39

Personalised teacher items with her teacher name on:
Thermos mug
Sanitiser
Jute bag
Pencil case
Lanyard thingy
You can get lovely personalised stickers on eBay v cheaply "Mrs Sawyer says I'm a star!" sort of thing. I used to buy these to pop with a bottle of wine for my kids teachers.

Personalised post it notes "From the desk of Mr x" went down well

RockingMyFiftiesNot · 23/09/2020 07:50

@cameocat

A good whistle!
Any suggestions for good makes of whistle? I'm sure there are loads on the Internet but not sure how I'd be able to tell a good one from pictures. Or maybe from a sports shop? Suggestions welcome!

A strong durable plastic one. Metal whistles are torture on a cold day

mmgirish · 23/09/2020 20:04

Is she Primary or Secondary? If she's primary, you could get her personalised stickers/stampers.

SE13Mummy · 23/09/2020 20:35

Wristies (the fleece or cashmere ones that won't be too bulky for wearing inside).
Pritt stick multi pack.
Heavy duty staple remover like this

Beach11 · 23/09/2020 20:48

Strong jute bag, hat/scarf/gloves for break duty, travel cup, chilli bottle, a magazine subscription(for down time)

mrpenny · 23/09/2020 22:06

Twinkl subscription.

Livingthecovidaloca · 23/09/2020 22:30

A contigo travel mug... my coffee is still warm when I finally drink it at the end of the day!

Hercwasonaroll · 23/09/2020 22:32

Primary or secondary?

What subject?

Honestly I don't go in for most of the stuff listed here as secondary maths.

Decent work wear or vouchers for it. Money for decent shoes is another fave!

balloonsintrees · 23/09/2020 22:35

Weird one, but I love these for storing sets of resources. They take over 60 A4 sheets at a time without crushing.

I agree that whether she's primary or secondary will make a huge difference here. As a primary teacher:

  • date stamper
  • flair pens
  • post its in interesting shapes
  • cute stickers
  • chilly bottle
  • travel mug
  • powerpoint clicker
  • whistle
  • astrobrights paper is very trendy among certain teachers
  • dry erase dots to use as mini whiteboards
  • bell (to ring as an attention grabber)
  • wireless doorbell (same as bell)
  • electric pencil sharpener
  • something nice for her. Candles/chocolates/perfume etc

Very niche and certainly not to everyone's taste but I have Disney mouse ears in the shape of doughnuts...they are my "Doughnut Disturb Me" ears. If I'm wearing them - usually working with a small group - the kids know they can't come bothering me unless the room is literally on fire Grin

SionnachRua · 23/09/2020 22:44

Also not really a stocking present but dry erase clipboards are the bomb. I get so much use from them.

TheMistressQuickly · 23/09/2020 22:45

Wine and a whistle. But, I’m secondary!

RockingMyFiftiesNot · 23/09/2020 23:01

Thanks you for more great suggestions. She's primary, and as previously mentioned she has asked for a traditional stocking with stocking fillers. It won't be full of work related stuff but wanted a few bits that she doesn't already have. So many ideas here, thank you all.

Multicoloured whiteboard pens - Costco do a great pack with lots of colours and bullet tips and chisel tips( much better for teaching hand writing), I love my buzzer set - you get them from Amazon - for fun endings to lessons. A good whistle is always welcome. Personalised stampers or stickers are good. Wine. Chocolate. These days I'd say a good hand moisturiser too - I feel like I'm constantly washing my hands. Stationary and stationary storage is always welcome. Did I say wine and chocolate?
