Xbox?? Help!

My eldest is 9 and has recently been asking that he would like an Xbox so we are thinking we will buy one as the main family present this year. We also have a 7 year old and 4 year old. I have absolutely no idea where to start! I think the last console we got was a Wii when it first came out years ago! Can anyone point me in the right direction of what I need to get? Help! Thanks x

There is a new xbox due out later this year so may be worth waiting for that if you want the latest model , I think it’s due out in November . Personally I would ask your son what type of games he wants to play and why particularly he wants an Xbox and then assess which console would be best from there .

Cherryrainbow · 01/09/2020 10:32

I would recommend finding out what games as well as some are released only to specific consoles, you might even find a better or cheaper alternative depending what hes into.

Places like cex do second hand consoles particularly for older ps and xbox models x

New xbox out later this year. My boys fav games are minecraft, fortnite and plant vs zombies. They also liked the lego games and can be bought quite cheap now. Digital version is cheaper but we always stick the the disk version

neeps1207 · 01/09/2020 13:27

Thanks everyone. He is into Minecraft in particular and only really wants an Xbox as all his wee friends have one. I don't know whether its best getting the new console or maybe getting the current one as I imagine there may be better deals if the new one is coming out. Its like a whole new world to me :)

Digital version? Disk version? Arggghhh - help!! Can you download games now, like films? Kinda makes sense. Is the disk version better?(we don't ever buy dvds now, we always download)

Have a look at an Xbox One S
They're around £250 new and are digital only, no disc drive. Then have a look at Xbox Game Pass. It's like Netflix for games. £10 a month gives unlimited access to 100s of games for the whole family. With a decent internet service it should be all a family of different ages needs.

MsMiaWallace · 01/09/2020 13:38

Watching with interest as I'm in the same boat!
I was even looking at the older Xbox 360 to get my DS used to one but worried that it'll be too dated?

Xbox 360 to get my DS used to one but worried that it'll be too dated?

It would be these days. At least with an Xbox One it should be ok for the future as MS are trying to make their new games compatible with Xbox One for the next two years.

Dazedandconfused10 · 01/09/2020 13:48

They have stopped making more of the current console due to the new one being available. New one will be backwards compatable for games, where as after a while you wont be able to get new games on the old console.

You would be better getting the new console I think. I got the ps4 6years ago, it's still going strong but I will be upgrading to the new console when it is released.

flameprincess · 01/09/2020 13:58

Don't bother with an Xbox 360, it's way too old and your DC wouldn't be able to play online with friends who have the current Xbox. The new Xbox that's coming out in November is going to be a hefty sum and more suited to heavy gamers who have 4K TVs to benefit from the graphics upgrade so not really something I would buy a 9-yr old BUT its release will no doubt drive down the cost of the current Xbox. Like PP said look at the Xbox One S and consider purchasing Gamepass it will have all the games on it he could wish for (including Minecraft)

flameprincess · 01/09/2020 14:07

@Dazedandconfused10 yeah but the new console will be around £500-£600 which is probably a bit OTT for the OPs needs when she can still get the One S for around £100-£150 and easily get a couple years use of it (by which time new console will have dropped). They aren't forcing people to upgrade to the new one any time soon by removing support for it.

MsMiaWallace · 01/09/2020 14:21

Surely you can buy loadsa old games on eBay/CEX etc?

neeps1207 · 01/09/2020 14:28

Thanks everyone - will look at the Xbox One S and the gamepass - can he link up with his friends on that one too? I would rather not be paying £500-600 - I had budgeted about £300. Dreaming back to when this present buying was easy and he was happy with wrapping paper!

If his friends have Xbox one as well then he should be able too.

TankGirl97 · 01/09/2020 14:43

We have an Xbox. 7 and 5 yo love the Lego Jurassic Park and Lego Harry Potter games.

flameprincess · 01/09/2020 15:15

@neeps1207 Gamepass is the 'gaming netflix' and Xbox Gold is the subscription to pay online. Rather than purchase them separately you can purchase Gamepass Ultimate and I would suggest rather than spend a lot at once, perhaps get him 3 months worth voucher off cdkeys.com and see how much use he gets out of it first. If you can hold out until Amazon Prime Day or when the new console launches I've no doubt you will get an Xbox One S for under £150. Lidl were doing them for £99 at one point! Prime Day always has a deal on and other stores like Argos etc will try price match whatever deal they have so you can benefit even if you don't have Amazon Prime.

flameprincess · 01/09/2020 15:16

Oh and Black Friday deals of course Grin

flameprincess · 01/09/2020 15:16

*play online - not pay online (in regards to Xbox Gold)

Jackparlabane · 01/09/2020 15:23

Don't dismiss the Xbox 360 - it will play Minecraft, Terraria, Lego games etc, and also function as a DVD player and access Amazon Prime etc. Good for younger kids.

Lots of the mods kids want for Minecraft only work on PCs. We got a 360 about 4 years ago and then got a PC and a couple portable devices - no-one's asked for a better console yet.

MsMiaWallace · 01/09/2020 15:35

I can't find a new Xbox one for under £200

MonkeyToesOfDoom · 01/09/2020 15:39

Not at the minute, but end of November and black Friday you might.
Cantthinkofausename · 04/09/2020 20:01

He'll be able to connect with friends on the one or one s. We got my son the one s last year its great not having disks lying around getting scratched etc

Cantthinkofausename · 04/09/2020 20:03

Ment to say we got the digital edition one s!

Figgygal · 04/09/2020 20:07

My 8yo got an xbox and now regrets not having a switch like all his friends. He’s also got into Pokemon in lockdown and it’s a Nintendo game

The Xbox was a lot cheaper than a switch but there’s not many age appropriate games for younger children and especially not on Xbox game pass.

anotherwinkywinkybumbum · 05/09/2020 16:16

Problem with the 360, is it doesn't support all the updates for Minecraft anymore.
