Talk to me about lights on the front of the house

I'm aware it is probably a bit early to be thinking about this!

Over the last couple of years we have hung icicle lights from the gutter of our house, which are pretty but seem quite tame compared to the neighbours. I'd love to put up some more lights, maybe around the front door or downstairs windows, but I've got no idea how to attach them. I'd quite like to hang a garland around the front door, but again I'm not sure how to attach it on.

Does anyone have any sage-like advice on this vital topic? Dp is flatly refusing to discuss on the basis of it being August!

Never too early to think about Christmas lights!
I have no idea about how to attach them so will follow with interest as I am keen to make our house look super Christmassy for my babies first Christmas this year.

RealityExistsInTheHumanMind · 29/08/2020 21:52

There are lots of light hanging solutions on Amazon - you don't even have to buy from there, you can just see what you want and search for it elsewhere

An over door hanger is a good option for wreath hanging.

soundsystem · 29/08/2020 22:00

Ooh! I have no advice, but also starting to think about this. We didn't put up lights last year as had a new-ish baby but keen to go for it this year!

WTF99 · 29/08/2020 22:02

Fgs...its August people...August! Stoppit!

WTF99 · 29/08/2020 22:03

Apologies....just realised this is in the Christmas section. Needless to say I won't be returning Grin

SirSamuelVimesBlackboardMonito · 29/08/2020 22:05

The more lights the merrier!!

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 29/08/2020 22:27

I put a lit wreath up on one of those 3M hooks on the front door (white UPVC )

I really fancy one of those projectot lights but I'd worry about it being pinched !
Could use it in the back garden though...

spence246 · 29/08/2020 22:34

we use command decorating strips for the window lights

Stompythedinosaur · 30/08/2020 01:56

Thanks everyone. Spence did you command stripe go on the window frame, or the wall? I guess they stayed up OK? I'd love to be able to use something that was easy like command strips.

Reality I had a look on amazon but struggled to find anything that didn't seem like it was made for wood frames, which we don't have. I also looked at anchor hooks but they seemed a bit much?

We have one of those projector lights that 70isaLimitNotaTarget mentioned. A present from a DS. I thought it would be rather ‘Chevy Chase’ but actually I like the moving snowflakes. Four years on and no theft.
Otherwise we have two small potted ‘lollipop’ trees either side of the front step, and I poke a set of Poundland battery lights into the foliage. The batteries last for ages. They look very pretty, and I tie a ribbon bow on each too.
This thread is making me feel quite festive.

JuiceyBetty · 30/08/2020 10:07

I use these command hooks. Leave them up all year round (you can't see them!)

spence246 · 30/08/2020 10:39

on the frame. Also use one for the door wreath but that's inside and upside down @Stompythedinosaur

notangelinajolie · 30/08/2020 10:44

Never to early for Christmas lights Grin
But please please don't get those bloody awful blue flashing ones like my neighbours. They look just like the emergency services have arrived en mass.

Stompythedinosaur · 30/08/2020 11:06

Thank you very much!

I think those command hooks around the window frames is the way I will go.

Definitely won't do blue lights notangelina I agree they are awful! I like warm white inside and cool white outside.

Has anyone hung anything like a garland around the door? I realise I might be getting carried away with American decorating sites on Pinterest. Any thoughts about how to keep such a thing up?

You need Suction hooks. The sort you lick and stick for window lights

aToadOnTheWhole · 30/08/2020 14:39

I'm planning on putting lights in our tree at the front. Solar ones, colourful. I usually just have colourful ones and a mini Christmas tree in the window.

My DMs planning on having a full four foot high LED nativity in their garden, but it is the vicarage Grin

aToadOnTheWhole · 30/08/2020 14:40

Forgot to say, I use sellotape and have my lights on the inside. Next door have little command hooks all the way round the window and an outside covered plug outlet.

JuiceyBetty · 30/08/2020 14:47

I'd like a garland round the door too but don't have a clue how to get one up. So watching with interest!

Tulipvase · 30/08/2020 16:20

For the wreath I’d use ribbon over the top of the door and secure if to the back of the door.

sueelleker · 30/08/2020 17:14

I'd love projector lights, but we've got a sprocker spaniel who's obsessed with chasing lights and shadows. He'd be demented and exhausted by Boxing Day!

ShaunaTheSheep · 31/08/2020 07:48

Battery LED fairy lights are cheap and easy to add to bushes, hedges and hanging baskets, with shiny plastic baubles for daytime.

Lidl usually do a projector - mine has large white snowflakes.

Cable ties are prefect to hold everything in place, including to 'lock' the battery packs.

I suspect command hooks are the way to go for the American style garlands.

GreyGardens88 · 31/08/2020 12:23

Please don't, I think any outdoors lights other than a few white or warm white lights in a tree looks awful and tacky. I was going to view a house to buy but noticed the next door neighbours had icicle lights hanging from their gutter in October and it actually put me off viewing the house

Boo! Hiss! (Xmas panto style)
Cherryrainbow · 31/08/2020 12:51

Tempted to get some solar panel fairy lights for the garden this year. Normally I just stick some of the poundland type of fairy lights on the window sill so they can be seen from outside x

Themostwonderfultimeoftheyear · 31/08/2020 13:50

We always have a wreath on our door (we use an over door hook for it) but this year I fancy some nice warm lights to go along the beam of our porch. Next door put very white icicles up which I don't like. I want something warm and twinkly.
