Talk to me about lights on the front of the house

I'm aware it is probably a bit early to be thinking about this!

Over the last couple of years we have hung icicle lights from the gutter of our house, which are pretty but seem quite tame compared to the neighbours. I'd love to put up some more lights, maybe around the front door or downstairs windows, but I've got no idea how to attach them. I'd quite like to hang a garland around the front door, but again I'm not sure how to attach it on.

Does anyone have any sage-like advice on this vital topic? Dp is flatly refusing to discuss on the basis of it being August!

GreyGardens I'm afraid your pleas will fall on deaf ears. My lights are the least of my christmas tackiness!

I wonder if I should get a projector too!

We put our door garland up with suction hooks.
Inspired by this thread, I'm going to twist battery powered twinkling lights through it.

Stompythedinosaur · 01/09/2020 00:38

Jam do the hooks go on the door frame or the wall?

We hang icicle lights across the top and bottom gutters (with hooks from Home Bargains). Warm white, which is welcoming and toasty. Quite a few neighbours use cool white and I think it looks a bit harsh.

For the door wreath, I bought a metal hook from John Lewis. It hooks over the top of the door and doesn’t damage the wood.

I might add a indoor window dressing of hanging stars this year 🌟

@Tulipvase

For the wreath I’d use ribbon over the top of the door and secure if to the back of the door.
This is how I hang the wreath. Upside down command hook on the inside of the door.

Super silly question here, but I’m assuming for things like icicle lights you need an outdoor power point? I’d really love some lights this year but not sure how I’d do it...

BluebellsGreenbells · 01/09/2020 08:52

You can poke a wire in a window or we do it via the garage.
Or you can get solar powered lights.

@notangelinajolie

Never to early for Christmas lights Grin But please please don't get those bloody awful blue flashing ones like my neighbours. They look just like the emergency services have arrived en mass.
Yes.. I hate these too!
WouldBeGood · 01/09/2020 08:54

I used my letter box to tie the wreath over the door. Hope that makes sense, I’m doubting it myself now, but that’s how I did it.

JuiceyBetty · 01/09/2020 11:01

I'm another with an upside down command hook inside the front door. A really big one. It just stays there all year long.

Stompythedinosaur · 01/09/2020 12:40

TheHalloweenFairy the wire from the light will fit through a window seal, just pull it through a window and close it. Our icicle lights are plugged in in an upstairs bedroom.

I'm getting a new front door in October. I insisted on a central knocker so that I can tie on a wreath!

NoWordForFluffy · 01/09/2020 15:48

We cable tie the wreath to the knocker part of the letterbox on the inner front door (we have a porch). We feed the battery pack into the letterbox so it stays a bit warmer too!

TheHalloweenFairy · 02/09/2020 21:02

Thanks for the window tips!

BiddyPop · 03/09/2020 10:48

DH wraps a long string of plain lights around the stem of a tree in the driveway, and another string around a yew tree outside the sitting room window - they are nice and just sit without hooks. (He might use a cable tie for the very end of each string).

I've been looking at this for the v first time (usually away at Christmas). Never fancied a wreath because it sounds funeralish, but on pinterest they showed a design of a hanging plant (which I have outside front door) which can be decorated with baubles, holly and battery lights etc. Think I'm going to do that this year. Do want to be more festive, as people looking at other houses maybe the highlight of Chrismas activities with Covid around!

sueelleker · 03/09/2020 18:13

When we still had a car, we used to drive around counting Christmas trees in people's windows.
