Presents for men in the family

LazyDaisy10 · 20/08/2020 08:10

I always find it so hard every year and end up buying aftershave set, smellies or clothes.

Any ideas for men, they dont read books (I tried that 1 year) I cant keep buying aftershave or gift sets. Literally no hobbies that I can think of.
Ages 40-60 I have 4 to buy for.

My husband is virtually impossible to buy for. The most successful presents over the years have been:
A falconry day
Playing the organ in Gloucester Cathedral
A dash cam
An indoor / outdoor thermometer : one half is outside the house and the other is inside so you know the temperature without going outside
A bat detector
My pre- loved head phones

Unsuccessful presents include:
A framed print
Endless books
Beard oil
A digital measuring device
Various board games
A state of the art iPod

LazyDaisy10 · 20/08/2020 08:32

A dash cam might be an idea, thanks
My unsuccessful list is way longer than my successful listGrin I was looking at a beard oil set, think I'll leave itGrin

I normally find men easy to buy for but I think its cos the ones i know are nerds lol anything gaming/comic book/music etc. Are wins.

For the older gent I normally find they prefer more practical gifts as they normally buy for themselves stuff they like anyway. Food/alcohol hampers. DIY stuff (I got my OH a magnetic wrist band thing last year to hold screws when he fixes stuff up, it's been well used this year due to garden and diy projects during lockdown!)

Dashcam is a really good shout. OH had one from his parents last year and he was beyond happy with it, uses it all the time.

Notlostjustexploring · 20/08/2020 13:16

For presents I either get consumables or a really good quality version of something practical. One year i got my dad waterproof trousers, so he got proper good quality hiking trousers rather than the £10 he'd have settled on if he were buying it himself. He got a power drill along similar lines another year. Father in law got some really fancy niche green tea and coffee one year.

Other successes

Casual belt made from recycled bicycle inner tubes
Fancy, carefully selected beers that the recipient will like
Very good quality chocolates
Fortnum and Mason Turkish delight

Thanks for all the ideas on this thread guys. My Dad is bloody impossible to buy for!

StrictlyAFemaleFemale · 30/08/2020 11:17

Magazine subscription?
Nice food/drinks?

SephrinaX · 30/08/2020 11:21

Swiss Army knife is usually a good shout. They come in all different styles and prices.

bookmum08 · 30/08/2020 11:53

A chocolate Santa and a gift voucher for whatever shop that they (or their wife Grin) buys their underwear from.

covidmonkey · 30/08/2020 11:57

I have been buying Lego sets to dh. He likes Lego but don't buy them himself.

Zaphodsotherhead · 30/08/2020 12:14

DS is having his first year living with his GF. So I am buying them a joint 'experience' present. Last year I bought him a cooking day (he loves to cook), this year it will be walking with llamas out in Nidderdale.

Other son is heavily into making sets for Warhammer. Last year I gave him a box of DIY stuff (PVA glue, bubble stuff, craft knife, paints) to top up his kit.

topcat2014 · 30/08/2020 12:16

Just agree now not to buy presents. So much easier, on both the giver and receiver

JuiceyBetty · 30/08/2020 17:20

Following with interest as my dad is impossible to buy for...

wibdib · 30/08/2020 18:07

For any males that like cycling or a challenge, or late teens that are awkward and you want to give something that’s not tech - One of the best presents I gave dh was a unicycle.

They’re much cheaper than I expected - I found a juggling/unicycle/kite/etc shop that sold simple introductory ones for about £65, including stand and how to book around Black Friday. (And they have done for several years since).

It looks like a big present, it’s unexpected, it’s lots of fun but also frustrating trying to learn (in varying degrees varying on recipient!), if they don’t manage to use it you can use it to threaten other gifts if they don’t provide you with proper ideas (do you want another unicycle/how to unicycle book or dvd etc).

Dh also loves learning musical instruments - I threaten him with a didgeridoo if he doesn’t provide ideas - one year he will get one Grin. Planning to get him a cahon (not sure of spelling!) this year - a box drum thing that you sit on to play...

Walkley18 · 30/08/2020 19:34

A nice marble pen, biro or fountain, in their colours. Just got lovely fountain pen on ebay for under a tenner and it's really weighty. DH said it writes really nicely so cheap can be good depending on where you look!

Thenagainmaybenot · 30/08/2020 21:37

What does one use a dashcam for? Taking pictures of other drivers being dangerous?

littlecatfeet · 31/08/2020 01:50

My best buys for my husband have been:
Portable Bluetooth speaker
Canvas satchel
Wallet
Books about his Special Interests
Port
Dark chocolate

This year I am thinking of getting him:
a UGears model
New bike saddlebags
Whisky
A great pair of gumboots

SpnBaby1967 · 31/08/2020 20:48

My DH is so hard to buy for.

I thought I hit major success buying a tablet he wanted, but I havent seen it for months (he swears he uses it though 🤷‍♀️)

So I usually get him a tshirt, an xbox game and chocolate.

We tend to buy what we want (within reason) through the year anyway. He's hoping to get the new xbox so fingers crossed they'll be a decent game I can buy. He loves electric guitars but he has loads & they're expensive & he has all the "accessories".

He's not one for experience days, booze, posh foods etc.

Haha, in fact I remembered one year he was saving for the xbox one, so I saved up £200 and just handed him an envelope of cash Grin that was the year that worked.

Zaphodsotherhead · 01/09/2020 10:13

I think it's a question of 'know your man'. Some have hobbies with lots of consumables and that's great, others have no hobbies or interests at all and those are the really hard ones!

It's been said that a man's ideal present is something he's already got, but newer. So an updated version of something he uses a lot, or a new one of something that's getting a bit tatty.

JuiceyBetty · 01/09/2020 10:59

I KNOW my Dad and know he doesn't have any hobbies or interests!

mummmy2017 · 01/09/2020 11:12

I got my Dad a frozen steak and cheese one year.
He ate it a week later, and admitted it was a brilliant gift.
I think we try to buy gifts we can wrap, because we want things.
So what telling everyone you want a Santa list this year... Or they go on the bad list....

ZeldaSmelda · 06/09/2020 11:31

I have just preordered a handheld Nintendo which comes preloaded with the classic Super mario that we used to have on game boys. Hopefully it will be a hit!

Bellyfat · 06/09/2020 11:58

I bought my dad a pie hamper from Turners Pies by Post for Father's day which he really liked.
I had it delivered straight to his home and it arrived insulated and well packed.

Shantotto · 08/09/2020 13:54

The pies by post look amazing! I’m ordering some for myself!
