Dinosaur toys for 2/3 year old

Looking at dinosaur toys as my 2 year old is obsessed. As he'll be almost 3 at Christmas I'm looking at the Jurassic world toys. I'd like recommendations from any parents of Dino fans at what's good for this age. I can then check out offers on the run up to Christmas.

My son used to have some shoes that left Dino prints in the sand/mud - I think they were called Dinosoles. You can find them on amazon. They were good sturdy shoes.

Lego Duplo used to have some great dinosaur sets that were suitable for young children.

As you probably can tell by my name, my DS loves dinos! He is 3. He loves the Schleich figures, Holztiger dinos (but they tend to sell out of certain figures, so keep an eye out on sites like yesbebe.co.uk or babipur.co.uk), Lanka Kade have cheaper, chunky wooden ones, and Papo look good too but we only have sea creatures of those so far. I haven't had any of the Jurassic world ones as he prefers the ones I have mentioned. There is also a great book called 199 Dinosaurs and prehistoric animals which he loves. I also want to get him some of the playmobil ones, as he has seen those and fell in love. yesbebe.co.uk/books/33689-199-dinosaurs-and-prehistoric-animals-hannah-watson/

I don’t have any experience with the Jurassic World toys, but VTech switch and go is good. We also has Orchard Toys dinosaur lotto and my DS loved his Natural History Museum dinosaur torch and projector.

Possibly not for another year, but we got years of play out of this bucket of dinosaurs. They arent realistic tho, incase that matters.
We also had a 6foot inflatable TRex, from Amazon iirc, that was a great sucess.

I have three massive storage boxes of dinosaurs which are now largely sitting redundant! The problem with dinosaurs is they are very cheap and cheerful toys, like cars, and are easily available in places like poundshops, B&M etc. The jurassic world dinosaurs are quite expensive compared to others.

One thing I would recommend is avoid buying the ones that move and make noises.

Dd1 is 9 and she still sleeps with the cuddly stegasaurs she got for Christmas when she was three. She got a lot of use from schleicht dinosaurs (it mattered a lot whether her toys were identifiable real dinosaurs) and the Usbourne Big Book of Dinosaurs. Also a dressing up dinosaur tail.

Wow amazing, I've got lots to look at. I do like wooden toys and yes he has duplo but the Dino one is an old one.
We have a book that is my DD so a bit older for him, she was gifted it and that was a tkmaxx find.
He has some of the plastic ones and plays with them everyday. We are learning together all the names as we find them.

Another thought - we planted up a planter in the garden as a dinosaur garden (a bit like some people make fairy gardens) and she played with it a huge amount.

Stompy that's sweet that your DD still sleeps with her cuddly. I'll take a look at the book as that might be a younger one for him now.
Yes nice idea in the garden, it could go alongside the fairy one 🧚‍♀️

It did lead to a lot of dinosaurs stomping in the mud play! Dd1 is now officially too grown up for dinosaurs (she tells me), but I have lovely memories.

Tender Leaf have a nice range of wooden ones, we have the trex and velociraptor. They are also around half the price of Holztiger and personally I prefer the look of the Tender Leaf ones for the carnivores and the Holztiger for the herbivores.

We have the Jurassic World Mosasaurus and Spinosaurus, the kids love them. The Mosasaurus in particular is big.

We have a lot of Schleich and Papo too. Ds got his first Schleich at 10 months and its held up really well given the number of fights it's been in.

Playmobil might be another option. Ds got some for the Christmas just before he turned 3. We now have a house full of the stuff and they have dinosaur sets. Given his age I'd probably jump straight to the proper stuff rather than the 123 sets. Certainly dd who is just 2 has no issues playing with it.

Dirty dinosaurs from Orchard Games is good board game for that age group.

I like the look of the Schleich ones actually. They sell them in symths toys. I've seen those before.
I will defiantly be looking at all the options you've all suggested.
He loves mud! Maybe some cheaper ones for the garden play then.
I've not known anyone with playmobile but read on here how much people rate it. Yes he is used to older toys with my DD so he will probably be ok to go straight in to older stuff.
He loves duplo and has quite a few sets from his 2nd bday so I don't want to over do that. Unless they release another Dino set!

We had some soft and squidgy dinosaurs ( I think they were from Wilko) They’ve been great for taking in the bath, the paddling pool, to bed... DS has lots of the more traditional hard ones but lots are rather sharp (standing on a discarded Pterasaur in barefeet hurts worse than lego), so when you have a budding palaeontologist who wants to take their dino friends everywhere these have been ideal!

For stocking fillers, one of those hatching dinosaur eggs might go down well!
Also, I’ve heard really good things about FurReal Munchin Rex

Look on amazon for a dinosaur playmat that folds into a storage box. They come with some dinosaurs, and keeps things tidy. My son loves it. He also loves his Jurassic world duplo set with the big dinosaur (think it's that watch tower one).

His favourite book is "say hello to the dinosaurs". It introduces the dinosaurs and what noises they make (so triceratops makes a stomp stomp noise, diplodocus makes a chomp chomp noise). His dinosaurs are now called stomp stomps, chomp chomps, swish swishes etc.

The ones where you dig the dinosaurs out of sand are good

My ds had just turned 3 last Christmas and his favourite presents were new dinosaur wellies for nursery (I think I picked them up in Sainsburys) and the fake Lego dinosaurs on Amazon. Another dinosaur hit was one of those hatching dinosaur eggs you put in water.

Good few book ideas, I've had a look on amazon for those. We have 10 little dinosaurs and it's a good one.
Thanks for the playmobile recommendations I've had a look at the website. They must have offers on running up to Christmas.

I recently bought DSs a set of dinosaur eggs from Smyths. I hid them around the garden over the space of a few days and they were massively excited to find them and break them open.

The Dinosaur Atlas by Lonely Planet kids is a lovely reference book. My two love looking at it.

If you join the Playmobil club you get a 20 percent off voucher for your first order and they'll send the kids birthday/Christmas cards. The details are on the website.

We have half and half models, with the skeleton on one side/skin on the other that Ds really likes too.

I bought this one for Gds when he was 2 1/2 - he was still at the chucking-and bashing-everything stage, so any of the fancier walking/talking ones wouldn’t have lasted past Christmas dinner.
It went down very well - it’s chuck-and-bash proof, and he still plays with it at nearly 4.
