Smoked salmon with brown bread. Simple, easy and still lovely.

firsttimebuyer20 · 12/12/2019 15:28

Prawn cocktail! Have it every year, easy to prep on the morning and pop in the fridge Smile

TrickyD · 12/12/2019 15:29

No starter as such, but some canapés with drinks in the sitting room before moving in to the dining room for the meal itself.

BigFatLiar · 12/12/2019 15:29

Home made soup or pate on toast

cccameron · 12/12/2019 16:09

Always always have a retro prawn cocktail. That was what my mum did and I've carried on the tradition. Have another option of pate and melba toast for those who don't like fish.

SlatternIsTrying · 13/12/2019 14:16

Prawn cocktail with some smoked salmon for extra poshness.

Notthisnotthat · 13/12/2019 14:19

Grapefruit, mandarins and a wee cherry on top!

Lyricallie · 13/12/2019 15:06

We have amazing ham hock soup and maybe some prawns and nice bread.

IHaveBrilloHair · 13/12/2019 15:17

It has to be prawn cocktail, the world would stop turning otherwise, or something.

ExpletiveFairylighted · 13/12/2019 15:25

No starter, don't want anything to take the edge off our appetites, I've never had a starter with Christmas dinner. A few canapes a couple of hours before dinner.

SitOnSantasKnee555 · 13/12/2019 19:53

Have always done a prawn cocktail, as mentioned, can prepare well in advance and lovely and traditional. However always feel like a stuffed pig after starter, huge roast dinner, plus pud, plus cheeseboard.

So this year, we're doing canapés circa 11am on family arrival, and instead of eating at 1pm, we're eating at 3.30pm and not doing a starter at all, so we really appreciate our roast.

SunsetYorks · 14/12/2019 11:04

I’m Scottish & OH Yorkshire so we are having Yorkshire puds stuffed with haggis :)

Mrsjayy · 14/12/2019 11:10

Prawn cocktail obviously Xmas Grin

I am intruigued by the yorkshire/scottish fusion though wondering if I would like it ☺

SunsetYorks · 14/12/2019 11:23

It’s lovely! Also doing couple of black pudding ones. With gravy of course!

cccameron · 14/12/2019 11:29

It sounds lovely SunsetYorks but there's no way I could eat a Christmas dinner after that as a starter. I'm thinking that I want haggis with my Christmas dinner now though Crown Grin

Mrsjayy · 14/12/2019 18:26

I'm a bit funny with haggis in / on things I eat it on its own though

kinsss · 14/12/2019 18:28

Gluttons the lot of you!

Just having a laugh so don't roast me

BlackSwanGreen · 14/12/2019 18:29

Melon and feta salad

Lipz · 14/12/2019 18:35

I've had prawn cocktail since I was a child and I love it so always have that with a bit of Tabasco to spice it up. 2 of my kids love smoked salmon so they have that on brown bread. 2 other kids love smoked salmon wrapped over philly cheese so they have that. Other dd doesn't eat starters. Dh loves veg soup. Mil loves soup too so she'll have some too. Sil and her dh only eat cheeses for starters, their 3 kids like crackers with spreadable cheese. Other sil and her dh asked for bruschetta so gonna have to learn that one, their kids want tomato soup and prawns in pastry. We all have different tastes some like fish some don't, some like soup others don't. Thankfully they are all made day previous.

Waitingforadulthood · 14/12/2019 18:36

Baked Camembert with rosemary bacon and crusty bread

Soup ( broccoli and Stilton)for the dc

I serve chocolate for breakfast, the "starter" at 12, and actual Christmas dinner at 2 or 3, so perhaps it's not a starter and more of a brunch- it's aim is to stop dc getting ratty because they're hungry and to stop dh and I getting rat arsed because we're drinking from 6am.

Gizlotsmum · 14/12/2019 18:36

Soup, it's the one thing we all like and I am already cooking at least 2 different mains...

ErrolFinn · 14/12/2019 18:40

We have always had homemade lentil soup followed by prawn cocktail and smoked salmon.
We are definitely gluttons at Christmas! We have 2 starters, main, 2 deserts, then cheese board then chocolates/coffee...Blush though in our defence the meal lasts many hours so there are gaps in the courses!

PennyGold · 14/12/2019 18:45

Soup with crusty bread!
It's the only thing all six of us will eat.

LemonPrism · 14/12/2019 18:49

@lipz sorry but you make how many starters?!?

Keepthebloodynoisedown · 14/12/2019 18:50

Canapés in the living room, to keep everyone away from the kitchen and stop them ‘helping’ (getting under my feet).
