What does your 6 year old daughter actually play with?

Mine has asked for lol dolls and a vtech diary, but she doesn't play with dolls. I'm not sure diary will hold her attention for long.

She plays with her arts and crafts, and reads her books. She also plays with her brothers trains. Dolls and such like - no. She does always ask for them though?

I have got her a couple of lols, arts and crafts, books, a mermaid blanket, and vtech diary.

Am I missing a trick?

Lego
Playmobil
Brio trains
Horses
Wooden food
Baby dolls

Lipperfromchipper · 12/12/2019 17:15

Lego, hamma beads, Aqua beads, arts and crafts, playing outside making dens etc

Not really into dolls...but likes cuddly toys actually.

teenmumandsowhat · 12/12/2019 17:20

My 6yr old DD mostly likes
Lego
Sylvanian families
Wooden train track
Tea set
Arts & crafts
Reading

I’ve brought her a Toniebox this year as she really enjoys listening to stories and music as well as reading herself.

Divebar · 12/12/2019 17:25

My 7 year old barely plays with toys at all - only when she has a friend over for a play date. I wish she did it would make my life easier. She likes art and craft so I typically buy her nice colouring books and pencils, pastels etc. This year I’ve bought a couple of things from the Tate including a stamp carving kit. I’m also getting her a big slime making kit, a board game ( as yet undecided) a jigsaw, some books and probably an Alexa or something similar. She already has aquabeads, beading kits, all manner of crafting items. Last year she loved a disco light which cost £10 - she likes to dress up with her friends and create dance routines.

Sylvanian families

Hours and hours. Every day.

I’m Over the moon as so many options for Xmas presents!

HairyToity · 12/12/2019 19:19

Yes we have lots and lots of arts and crafts items, including jewellery, pottery, scrap books, and aqua beads. I just panic there is no big toy, but I dont want to spend money for the sake of it.

Sylvanians
Baby dollies/pram
Colouring

She's getting vtech kiddi concert glitter ball thingy, Sylvanians, bits and bobs

Elbeagle · 12/12/2019 19:56

We went with the v-tech globe as the ‘big’ toy.

Elbeagle · 12/12/2019 19:56

Actually it’s Leapfrog. Oops!

Marcipex · 12/12/2019 20:03

Art and crafts
Lego Friends

Asks for lol dolls because her friend has them, but ignores them once opened. Ditto hatchimals etc .

Deminism · 12/12/2019 22:40

At that age mine loved her 18inch design a friend/american girl doll dolls and accessories and craft sets

UndertheCedartree · 13/12/2019 00:17

I think different girls like different things.

My 7 year old is doll mad! From LOLs to Barbies to Our Generation - she loves them all! Dolls are the main thing she plays with apart from arts and crafts.

Daneel · 13/12/2019 00:58

Actually, I don't get it, OP. You say she plays with trains and hatchimals, but aren't getting her either of those, but can't think what to get her? Why don't you get her some trains of her own and a few hatchimals?

Elbeagle · 13/12/2019 03:22

Probably no point having more trains in the house if they already have some they both play with?

RainbowMum11 · 13/12/2019 03:26

Lego, dolls house, trains, arts & crafts & drawing,?still playing with her toy kitchen she got when she was 2!

Daneel · 13/12/2019 04:38

I don't think I agree with that, Elbeagle. It makes a difference to kids to have things given as their own, and there are so many different types of train sets that she could almost certainly get one for her DD without doubling up. Or if it's in the shared area unique additions like stations etc.

Elbeagle · 13/12/2019 04:40

Well we’re all different. We only have limited space in our house so if we already had a train set I don’t think I’d be buying another. My DD’s are happy to share their toys with each other and duplicates would be pointless in their eyes.

Elbeagle · 13/12/2019 04:43

Plus there’s only so long a nearly 7 year old is going to be playing trains for I imagine, so I’d be looking for things with longevity.

Daneel · 13/12/2019 05:04

Mmm, but given the OP has given her a lot of other things, it doesn't sound as if that's the problem, and she did say she wanted a big gift, and I did say different sets or additions... I just thought she might be missing an obvious gift because she had pigeonholed trains as her son's thing (which of course we can all do). As for longevity, all kids are different, I guess, and can grow out of any toy at any time, I wouldn't have said trains were any more risky than any others, though.

HairyToity · 13/12/2019 06:58

My daughter has her own trains. She has had countryside brio set for previous birthdays, and also has Rosie and Ashima as her own. She also has her dad's old electric train set.

My son is the main train obsessive in this house. My daughter plays with them, but not as extreme!

She has lots of hatchimals already, and hasn't asked for any.

I have decided I don't want to piss money up the wall, by getting her more and more stuff she won't play with. I have already tallied her gifts up at £150. She has what she asked for - LOL, so she shouldn't be disappointed. She has what she plays with arts and craft. My son has asked for more trains, so she will have access to his new toys too.

I now have some great ideas for her birthday though. Thank you.

She liked anything crafty, painting drawing sticking, playdoh etc and baking. She was very independant in the kitchen and would bake and dexorate cakes or biscuits etc for hours. Only played toys when friends came over. My boys played toys for hours and hours however.
She liked Lego but only built it then never played with it

Now she's nearly 13 and still loves art, she does loads of painting and drawing and watches hours of YouTube crap.
Get her a gingerbread house to build. With extra bits to decorate it. My daughter is still looking forward to doing hers this year.

HairyToity · 13/12/2019 07:18

I should add, we are from a big family, as well as parents/santa my children have presents from 8 other people. This is why we seemingly have nearly everything! The rest of the family are very generous.

My 5yo DD (who I am told is old for her age) loves:

Gravitrax

Writing and drawing on a little white board magnet thing so have got her one of those lcd writing tablets

Listening to stories and music, has a CD player in her room and cheap old MP3 player for travelling

Explorer/adventurer type stuff - last year she got a sort of explorer type pack with a little camo bag, binoculars and stuff like that. Camping lantern, survival food etc

Still into things like naming stuffed animals and making them collars and brushing their hair and shit like that. So she’s getting a little dog with a collar and a bed and carrier. That might be too young for your DD though.

I WISH she was into Sylvanians, I fucking love them.
