Gluten free Christmas - help needed

FilthyBiscuit · 10/12/2019 16:16

What can I buy and what do I need to think about?
Gluten free mince pies from Sainsburys are nice.
Gluten free bread sauce from M&S.
Gluten free biscuits to serve with cheese.
What can we have for tea in the evening? I would normally buy some of the party deal food but I'm guessing those are out.
Any help would be really appreciated - convenience foods only though as I am a lousy cook!

The stuffing and gravy might contain gluten. We use M and S ones, which are lovely. We also use M and S for party food, as they have a good range, in with the normal party foods.

Makirocks23 · 10/12/2019 16:25

All the major supermarkets have party food now, co op are good as are Morrison’s just be carful if cross contamination, separate baking tray and serving utensils,
I have a wheat allergy and actually roast is the easiest thing to make, substitute flour for cornflour in gravy and sauces, gluten free sausage meat for stuffing and you can get pre made pigs in blankets.

EwwSprouts · 10/12/2019 16:29

Some of the party food is ok like smoked salmon & prawn platter. M&S have a fillet of smoked salmon to carve at the table in the online xmas options or a serrano ham. Many of the M&S sausages are GF.

Also look at the vegetarian options eg sweet potato falafels with dip use a GF flour so ok.

FilthyBiscuit · 10/12/2019 16:32

This is all really helpful, thanks! there's a big M&S near me so I'll give them a visit.

Carluccio's do a gluten free panettone.

RagamuffinCat · 10/12/2019 16:39

I also got some cute meringue Santa hats in the frozen section at M and S which would be nice for a party!

AdaColeman · 10/12/2019 16:40

M&S have just started a new range of gluten free foods, so you should have plenty of choice from them.

Be wary of things like coatings containing gluten on crisps, ready to cook roast potatoes, chips, wedges etc. They are things that if home made you wouldn't expect to contain gluten. Gluten used as thickeners in desserts are another thing to look out for.

Topbird29 · 10/12/2019 16:43

You can also get gluten free xmas puds (mainly mini size), from most supermarkets.

FrenchyQ · 10/12/2019 16:46

Marks and Spencer party food has a few gf bits... My husband particularly likes the mini chicken kievs.

Stupiddriver1 · 10/12/2019 16:47

A lot of the co-op xmas party food is gluten free.
m&s do a nice chocolate log.

Be careful with free from ranges and double check it's gluten free as sometimes it's dairy free not gluten free.

Stupiddriver1 · 10/12/2019 16:48

And if you do gf sandwiches remember to use a new butter, not one which has had breadcrumbs transferred into it.

ConstanceL · 10/12/2019 16:53

Anyone know of anywhere that does a gluten free stollen?

Longbarn5 · 10/12/2019 21:25

Not too sure about stollen but you can get gluten-free panettone on Amazon. Also so there are some excellent gluten-free lemon tart recipes on various websites which make a nice change from the richer Christmas foods

CherryPavlova · 10/12/2019 21:40

I have a gluten free MIL arriving.
Christmas lunch is easy - usual things but cauliflower cheese/gravy made with cornflour. Bread sauce made with gluten free bread. Rest is pretty much gluten free anyway. I cheated and bought a gluten free pudding.
Christmas Eve is Village meal after nativity - Gammons with baked potatoes, coleslaw, cheese, red cabbage, Cumberland sauce, parsley sauce, then pavlova. All gluten free if parsley sauce made with cornflour.
Boxing Day is a drinks party so I do several vegetarian options and a few GF - salmon pate and baby cucumber on miniature rice cakes, gluten free cocktail sausages, cheeseboard skewers, miniature baked potatoes with cream cheese and chives,.
Then for supper I have done a GF chilli and rice.
Lunchtimes I do soups, rice crusted onion tart, salads.
Breakfast is simple bran flakes, yoghurt, fruit.

goose1964 · 10/12/2019 22:21

If you can find M&S gluten free tortilla chips they're amazing.Something gluten free that tastes better than the usual version.

Allmyarseandpeggymartin · 10/12/2019 22:25

Aldi have g f arancini balls

stripes1 · 10/12/2019 22:36

Some of the Tesco party food was GF last year-it had a label on the front saying GF. Also a lot of the Waitrose party food was, I got a good selection and froze it. If you have a branch of COOK near you they have some GF puddings that would do a bigger group. You can sort on their website to show the GF things.

TheBrockmans · 10/12/2019 22:46

Carluccio's do a gluten free panettone. well there goes my diet.

Many shops now sell gluten free pigs in blankets as standard so don't cost any more. Aldi had gluten free stuffing balls in. Not party food per se but I also like their tempura chicken which is gluten free and about half the price of the M&S version.

Ice creams, meringues are usually gluten free.

Do check the falafel as some are gf some are not.

Shop Curry doesn't usually contain gluten.

fromcitytocountry · 10/12/2019 22:50

I'm a coeliac and always have a completely gluten free Xmas.

Check the stuffing and pigs in blankets.
Gravy - make sure it's safe and thicken with cornflour if needed

You can buy all the above GF along with Yorkshire puddings from nearly all supermarkets.

Leeks in cheese sauce - do with cornflour or gf flour.

You mentioned crackers and Xmas pudding already 🙃

Desserts - trifle can be gf using gf Madeira cake. Other ideas...pannacotta, cheesecake with gf biscuits, meringue based, chocolate tortes etc

Also make sure people don't contaminate the food...one crumb can do damage to a coeliac so keep all non gluten away and surfaces clear, no reuse of cutlery, chopping boards etc

AlunWynsKnee · 10/12/2019 22:50

Sainsburys sell Mrs Crimble's gf stuffing usually.

fromcitytocountry · 10/12/2019 22:50

Also coop and m&s party food is a winner for gf

FilthyBiscuit · 11/12/2019 00:12

Thank you all so much, my stress levels are lowering with each post Gin

Asda and ocado/ Waitrose are the best for gluten free options

All GF Panetone are shite
ASDA do a mini gf Christmas pudding that is tasty

There are good stuffing options available. You can always make your own gravy with cornflour

KristinaM · 11/12/2019 00:46

Aldi do a bar of GF Christmas cake ( you don’t want a large round one ) .

Nairn’s do Gf oat cakes and Gf crackers for cheese and biscuits .

Pigs in blankets - you need to read the ingredients In tiny print on the back, they are not always labelled GF on the front. Look out for wheat, barley or rye - they should be in bold.

KristinaM · 11/12/2019 00:51

I’ve never seen a Gf Stollen.

Christmas sweets - Lidl Favorina has Bags of coated almonds in various flavours which are AMAZING. Also marzipan sweets and chocolate coated marzipan logs.
