I've barely worked at all this year so I've asked my family if we can have a strict budget of £10 each, and they've agreed. The trouble is what can you get for that? There are no children to consider, only my dad (69) mum (65) sister (35) and brother (34). They're always impossible to buy for anyway but such a tight budget (could stretch to £12 each) is going to make it extra tricky!

I'd like to try and avoid the generic scented candle/socks/gloves/moisturiser type stuff. Any more original ideas that might work?

If they don't specifically need something, is there a way to make it personal without falling into the craft-fail minefield? Framed photo from a special moment perhaps with a copy of the tickets/other memento from that time in the frame too? I would probably try hard to think of a something thoughtful and low cost like that, and combine with a reasonable choc/bottle that they'd enjoy.

Interested to get ideas too,
A book would be top of my list but I love reading !

user1493242132 · 26/11/2019 22:25

Can you buy cinema tickets for all of you to go to together?

Waterlemon · 26/11/2019 22:27

A few years ago, we tried to cut down on how much we spent on the adults in the family, but it ended up with us all receiving lots of token gifts like boots gift sets, socks etc. We decided it was a waste of time, money not to mention the environmental impact.

So the family decided to stop wasting money on token gifts for everyone And we started doing a secret Santa. So every adult bought for 1 adult. Each adult would write a wish list of Suggestions. It started off being £40 but over the years it’s decreased.

Now we spend Only £10 on one person each, but every year we have a theme and the gift has to actually be useful. Last year I got two “spa” boxes from MIL “for working out” which contained cleaning products and “for chilling out” which contained tea, biscuits and bubble bath. I bought SIL a really sweary calendar that she was overjoyed with. The other SIL got snail slime beauty products.

Would your other family members agree to something similar rather than receiving lots of token gifts they really don’t want, need or unlikely to use?

Butterflycookie · 26/11/2019 22:29

Could you do secret Santa instead?

Velveteenfruitbowl · 26/11/2019 22:32

An H box from hotel chocolate is £12.50 but I think they have a deal for VIP members at the moment. T2 have really nice Christmassy teas within your budget. Penguin populars are under £10. Charity shops often have nice classics/special interest/collectible books for a few quod at most.

Strictly1972 · 26/11/2019 22:35

Look on groupon for an afternoon tea deal for you all to go on (or other experience). I got one for 4 people inc a glass of Prosecco for £45 recently. It was good too.

elizabethdraper · 26/11/2019 22:44

Coffee voucher, cinema voucher, tesc o voucher act

Or a box of everyone favourite stuff like eggs, butter, sugar, tea bags, coffee, jam, cereal, just everyday favourites. Then print off a photo of the sound of music with the caption a few of your favourite things.

Or a box of breakfast sausages, rashers, pudding egg it bake at home pastries and posh oj

NannyR · 26/11/2019 22:48

I agree with the secret Santa idea - I wish my family would do it! Each person buys one person a decent gift rather than buying four token gifts.

BeanBag7 · 26/11/2019 22:50

To be honest I would be pretty unimpressed with a box of eggs, Tea bags and jam for Christmas :/

Are you crafty and could have a go at making something, like knitting your dad a scarf or hat or making your mum a christmas tree decoration or candle?

bookmum08 · 26/11/2019 22:52

Obviously it depends what interests they have and things they like. I love books and art/crafts and with £10 I could buy loads of stuff I love from The Works - 3 books for £5 and an adult colouring book and pens. The Works do jigsaws and board games too. If they are into gaming there are some gaming related bits in Primark like playstation mugs that are about a fiver.
Tesco have a bunch of new release hardback books for £10 each. I am a Lego fan and there are loads of £9.99 or less little sets that I would love to add to my collection.
Absolutely loads out there for a tenner or less. But it depends what they like.

We do secret Santa for both mine and DHs family. Means that everyone gets a half decent present (budget £30-40). Less waste and less shit £10 presents.

Canyousewcushions · 26/11/2019 23:04

Have you looked at the Christmas bargain thread?

If it was my family, I'd get some of the small/easy kits from The Spicery for around £3.

Some of them are really into craft so would see if I could pick up some cute craft supply bits.

A bit more generic but I'd probably have a look for offers for craft beers as this would go down well with my DB.

Magazine subscription for a few issues only can be really cheap- that may be an option if there is something pertinent to their interests.

Books/DVDs and music can also come in at well under £10.

Leflic · 26/11/2019 23:14

Secrect Santa works better for £10 because it’s a game and a gift in one. Better for families than work mates because they know each other’s foibles. The nice people give sensible presents, the boldly ones aim to make a point. It’s definitely memories..

There’s loads of stuff for £10. Buy a better version of something cheap maybe. A reduced from £15 down to £10 bottle of wine rather than standard bottle, a beautifully wrapped pair of earrings ( who even knows how much they cost), something with their name on, something funny.
I have a friend who teaches film at Uni is getting a 237 room key key ring for the Overlook. £3 but perfect for them as they also like a hotel..

TigerJoy · 26/11/2019 23:57

We do secret santa for the grownups in my family and it is great fun. We did it not just for money but also waste. There are websites that will allocate you. Enjoy!

mumwon · 27/11/2019 00:13

posh food stuff (best quality tea/coffee/chocolate) small treat sized top quality chocolates. mini hampers? in door plants (word to the wise B & q et al price drop on Christmas Eve!

squee123 · 27/11/2019 00:18

why not family secret Santa? So instead of buying everyone a token £10 gift each family member buys one person a £40 gift. That way you can get something really decent they'll actually make use of and enjoy

bookmum08 · 27/11/2019 07:34

I really am suprised that people seem to think you can't buy something 'decent' for a tenner. You can!! Absolutely loads of stuff as I said above. I have bought a paperback book for my mother in law that I know she will enjoy reading. It cost £4.50. It doesn't have to be 'tat' or pointless things. There is loads of stuff out there. No wonder the high st is dying?

stridesy · 27/11/2019 07:47

Hi without knowing their interests...
For your brother what about a dvd (someone come out until just after) but new Star Wars, joker, it2, new brad Pitt and leonardo dicaprio film.
Dad barber and shave voucher.
Mum diary, calendar or nice notebook.
Sister makeup, beauty stuff or pinch of nom cookbook.

stridesy · 27/11/2019 07:51

Slippers
Tote gloves
Both my parents like chillo pillows

MsChatterbox · 27/11/2019 07:55

My mum has dogs so I've got her some hooks that say dogs leads. My dad is on a tight budget so I always do him a food hamper containing ingredients for a few meals and also some treats. My brother I'm going to be getting some kind of puzzle or board game. My husband I'm getting some protein shake. So there's a few ideas on the same budget 😊. Basically look at who they are as a person, what they are interested in and try to think of something related to this.

Kerberos · 27/11/2019 07:55

My sisters and I have a long standing agreement that our gifts will be less than £5 and must come from a charity shop. I've bought and had some fab gifts from them. Might that be an option?

waves as I know at least one of them is on here :)

anypossibleway · 27/11/2019 08:00

We are doing a £10 secret Santa with my family and it needs to come from a charity shop. You can get loads of good stuff for £10

Musmerian · 27/11/2019 08:26
