6yo DS - Struggling for inspiration this year!

DS is 6 and is crazy into animals and dinosaurs, lego, puzzles and cricket. We already own the entire contents of the NHM shop (tho I will take a trip over there in case I can find anything he doesn't yet have...). On his very meagre list so far I have

Lego (tho I did threaten to move out last year if any more was bought, and much has been acquired in the meantime..)
Puzzles
Cricket whites (tho DH thinks that's a crap present, I'm getting it anyway)
7 Nations 1 Planet book

and that's it! I can't think of anything else! We have Gravitrax which he loves, brio, magformers….
He's not into gaming, and already has an Amazon Fire for travelling. Thanks for any ideas!

We got this game for my DS last Christmas when he was 6
It’s not very high tech!!! But he loves it. Looks like they may no longer stock it though....

17caterpillars1mouse · 25/11/2019 14:30

Some art supplies maybe or craft kit
Chocolate making kit
Playdough
Character towel
Pajamas
Jigsaw puzzle

NameChangingGame · 25/11/2019 14:47

@lostmyrubyslippers thanks for some reason that game has really made me giggle! Cricket doesn't really 'do' high tech does it!!!

DonPablo · 25/11/2019 14:48

Dobble is a must.

NameChangingGame · 25/11/2019 14:49

You're right 17 caterpillars I think he would like a craft item , but so many of them are overly targeted at girls (ie smothered in glitter and pink). I need to do more digging on that front...

NameChangingGame · 25/11/2019 14:52

I've never heard of dobble! Thanks will have a look.

Lol! My DH recalled having basically the same game when he was a child!

I’ve got Dobble for DS this year.
Also got a science set last year, a Galt one off Amazon in a red box- seemed to be the most generic rather than just slime or whatever.
Or would he appreciate an experience of some kind? I know 6 is quite young to appreciate this as a gift but this seems to be the direction we are going more & more with my DS.
You can purchase a tour of lords cricket ground off buyagift/ red letter days & there are regular discount codes too

Mammatino · 25/11/2019 15:29

Look on smyths £12.49 cricket test match board game, it's basically subuteo but with cricket. You bowl little ball bearings at the batsman (with a bat you manipulate), batsman hits it across green felt and your little fielders have to catch it. My brother had this 30 years ago, he is still a cricket maniac and still has this game. I have a 6 Yr old boy and he loves it too. Board games like Junior scrabble, Yahtzee, spirograph. He's a massive gamer which is what he wants mainly, but he loves his uncles asterix books so we are filling the gaps with those, space how it works books, UK counties jigsaw, supertato books, a v tech camera. He also wants a build a bear too and a bloody partridge in a pear tree.

livingthegoodlife · 25/11/2019 19:30

What about Guinness book of records?

New hat & gloves.

Insulated water bottle.

Smiggle pencilcase & stationary.

Remote control robot.

My seven year olds list!

There are 2 interesting magazines you could check out.
www.ecokidsplanet.co.uk/

The other is more science called Okido. You can pick that one up in Sainsbury’s if you want to have a look at it

My dino obsessed five year old asked for a box with all the dinosaurs in and i found this. It is eye watering expensive but... a box of all the dinosaurs...

Also the website is good for a trawl through

Moreisnnogedag · 25/11/2019 21:02

Kids Nat geo magazine in a more sensible price bracket

JoggingNotRequired · 25/11/2019 21:09

For something totally different, how about Bakugan? Starter sets are around £15 and there's a starter board game version. I found with mine that the age 6 going up to 7 was quite a big leap in interests / development generally and they left behind the cars / brio / dinosaurs stage and got more into fantasy monsters and the like.

TheWayOfTheWorld · 25/11/2019 21:49

My 6 year old likes craft kits as well - there are paint by sticker books on Amazon and he's also had mosaic kits (pirates, dragons etc) by Orb Factory.

TheWayOfTheWorld · 25/11/2019 21:51

And another vote for Dobble, Yahtzee etc. He also loves his magnetic darts board.

Beingyellow · 25/11/2019 21:56

My 6 year old son wants:

Dress up costumes
Drawing stuff
Pop vinyl figures of characters he likes
An alexa for music
Fuggler toy
Fake tattoos
An fake elf on the shelf thats safe to play with

Mammatino · 25/11/2019 22:21

Have a look on the Baker Ross website there's tons of crafty sets on there. We got some porcelain pens from there, plain white crockery from the pound shop and let him go to town.

NameChangingGame · 26/11/2019 15:08

Thank you everyone, lots of things to research from here! Interesting what you say Jogging about there being a developmental leap at this age. I think he just asked for dino stuff because that just what one 'does' at Christmas! He doesn't play with them at all now, but does still read on the topic, but as I say we have enough to last a lifetime.
Science sets I find a bit hit and miss, but hadn't considered so will have another look.
Bakugan - never heard of it, so will have a look after bedtime this evening.
Thanks all!

Qwirkle
UNO
Dobble
Link it
Jenga
Bananagrams
Shut the box
Battleships
Frustration
Ker plunk

Is he creative? I can suggest many art and craft type things if he enjoys that. Ds loves that at 6yo, still does. He isn’t at all talented, but really enjoys it and it relaxes him.

Equimum · 26/11/2019 20:39

Our son turns 7 this Christmas. Hits so far, and list requests include:

  • hot wires
  • bey blades
  • bugs in the kitchen
  • connect 4
  • frustration
  • Monopoly Junior
  • smart games
  • John Adams gross science kits
  • magnetic science kit
  • Balloon modelling set
  • origami set (Sainsburys have some nice ones )

For my younger son’s Birthday I bought loads of crafty bits from Hobbycraft and a book of toilet roll craft ideas. Both boys have loved making stuff from it, so something like that might be worth a try.

NameChangingGame · 26/11/2019 21:36

Oh god he loves a bit of junk modelling. Would I get away with a massive box of the recycling gathered between now and Dec 24?? It would look mighty impressive under the tree GrinGrin

DonPablo · 27/11/2019 06:30

There's a junk modelling kit on amazon that has wheels and axels in and stuff. I'm going to get that.

FixItUpChappie · 27/11/2019 06:35

My 6 yr old got a Harry Potter Wizard chess set for his birthday and we've been learning to play - that's been a hit.

FixItUpChappie · 27/11/2019 06:37

Also my sons getting this Playmobil set for Christmas......
