Present for 9 year old girl that is not an LOL doll

Doubleraspberry · 24/11/2019 19:19

DD’s Christmas list is entirely LOL dominated, other than books. I have bought a couple of single ones for her, as she only has two, but I resent those and refuse to spend bigger money on anything LOL related! I think it’s appalling tat and dreadful for the environment.

So Grinch moment aside, what can I get her instead? Looking to spend £50-100 on a single item as a big present. She already has some books, clothes and other bits and pieces. Her siblings are younger and each have a ‘main toy’.

Watching as my DS2 has got a birthday party to go to in early December.

ineedto · 24/11/2019 22:03

DD is a similar age with a passion for LOLs, Barbies and Unicorns!

Big hits have been - garmin watch, bike, scooter, iPod touch, lion king/Matilda/wicked tickets and a London weekend.

implantsandaDyson · 24/11/2019 22:13

My 9 year old is getting
An echo dot
Lego
Various Barbie sets
A twerking llama
A secret diary thing
Art stuff, she loves scratch art
Also an overnight bag/suitcase
Some books incl Guinness World Records and a David Walliams book Grin
Some stationery - she loves sticky notes, scrap books, photo collages etc.

Mine has discovered an interest in jewellery all of a sudden especially necklaces with her name or initial on it.

Doubleraspberry · 24/11/2019 22:16

Mine also likes initial jewellery!

We were thinking of one of the new Polaroid cameras but decided she would probably burn through the film in a day. Maybe when she’s a little bit older.

My 9 year old is getting a ton of LOL stuff so not entirely helpful I'm afraid. She is a hardcore fan and has been for a couple of years now though.

She's also hugely into Harry Potter so I've got her a few bits from Primark and adopted an owl for her online as her own Hedwig

Doubleraspberry · 24/11/2019 22:24

Maybe I should do a Harry Potter World weekend.

We did the Harry Potter studio for dd's 8th birthday. She really enjoyed it. The Hilton nearby is shocking though I've stayed in nicer travelodges (lovely staff but so run down). We've also seen the cursed child which was amazing and I recommend but it's pricey for good seats which is why we were up really high Grin

Doubleraspberry · 24/11/2019 22:37

We can’t do Cursed Child as she’s only on book three!

OP I was asking the exact same question. DD is getting a Bluetooth karaoke microphone. It is a Bluetooth speaker and microphone in one which will play literally any music from any device. It even has a button to blank out the lyrics which works well. We've been checking it out tonight and it's very good! Can't pry it out of DP's hands to get it wrapped! It's wireless and has adjustable echo. Grin Lol. Apart from that apparently 'bear coats' are all the rage right now.

Doubleraspberry · 24/11/2019 23:42

That sounds good.

She’s getting a very fluffy jacket that may even qualify as ‘bear’!

@shouldhavecalleditoatabix could you link to the karaoke Mic please. Sounds ideal for dd.

shouldhavecalleditoatabix · 25/11/2019 00:16

Bloody bastard thing is now £7 cheaper!! Oh the rage! AngryConfused

FoamingAtTheUterus · 25/11/2019 00:17

Diamond painting set ?? They're really popular at the mo. I've just ordered my DD a lilo and stitch one.

louisethedisease · 25/11/2019 00:20

What overnight bags are you getting? I could do with one for my dd

SE13Mummy · 25/11/2019 00:22

Rubik's cube! DD2 is now ten but cubes are all the rage round here, not just the traditional ones but all sorts of funky ones too. A Kanken rucksack would be popular with DD2 as would a pair of 'cool' trainers.

FrivolousPancake · 25/11/2019 00:59

My parents used to dismiss my wishlist as tat and get me what they wanted me to have instead.
Instead of Barbie things it was a stereo and instead of Take That and boyzone CDs it was Madness and Oasis. I really resented always being disappointed because of their own hipster ways.
I do thank them for my great taste in music though Wink

Doubleraspberry · 25/11/2019 01:19

Like I said, she is getting a bit of what she wants, and if I thought she genuinely desperately wanted more I would consider it (but really do resent wasting my money on such short-lived garbage). But she is always pleased with what she gets even when it’s not what she’s asked for, and she does pretty well.

There's an LOL Teepee that I personally think is lovely, it isn't that but would be in keeping with what your daughter likes.

You could also get her an LOL backpack which is something useful, LOL pyjamas again useful. There are actually quite a few non-tat LOL items.

Alternatively how about a nice piece of Sterling Silver jewellery? I'd recommend Hurley Burley for children's jewellery.

HPandTheNeverEndingBedtime · 25/11/2019 06:10

DD was 9 last year, andHPmad.

Metallic calligraphy pens and black paper (Dd already had a children's calligraphy set)

A book from amazon that shows how to draw cartoon HP characters.

A HP writing set which came with a wax seal, parchment paper, envelopes and notebook. (Hawkins Bazaar).

A HP quill and ink.
A HP cookery book from the works (cheap and lovely recipes in it)

The newest illustrated HP book, we already have all the HP books as Dd read My old ones but the illustrated ones are really beautiful.

The pop up Hp book, expensive but totally worth it.

SlayingDragons · 25/11/2019 06:18

Don’t bother with HP world unless she has seen at least 3 of the movies. The books are fine, but you really need to have seen the films to appreciate the tour. We went last year when our DTs had only seen 1&2. They enjoyed it, but nowhere near as much as older DC who had seen them all. If we’d just had the DTs it would have been a waste of time and money.

What about something for her room? A beanbag, some cool cushions, new bedding, art work for the walls? You could make it into a room pack with a selection of stuff - like a big hamper.

If you wanted to add a music thing to it, I can highly recommend the wonderboom speaker but you would need something to play the music from. (Which I think you don’t need with Alexa admittedly - but I refuse to have listening devices in our house so Alexa is out)

lolbrador · 25/11/2019 06:36

My dd9 is the same, LOL daft. And I've bought the ones she asked for apart from the camper which I just couldn't do. Too much plastic tat!

We've bought her an air track in place of this, in the hope that she can throw herself around in a slightly less mental manner.

Other things I know people have purchased
Vans (chunky filas being the other choice)
Unicycle
some Adidas clothing

She has an iPod touch, she loves it, she can message people but only people who we have put into her iPod. So she has me, her df, her grandparents and her aunties and uncles. I often receive message of how much she loves me, which is sweet.
Another present which was a big hit was a snowcone machine that Santa brought last year, it's been very well used!

Good luck op!

Deminism · 25/11/2019 11:24

My dd is almost nine. She mostly wants Harry Potter themed stuff - she wants to turn girly pink bedroom into a Hogwarts common room! She is getting, from us and GPs, Harry Potter bedding and rug, selection of HP store stuff in a trunk (for her bday which is week before Christmas and was chosen by her) and a whole range of Poundland Harry Potter gifts such a a door sign and a light up picture and a pencil case and notebook. And some Harry Potter lego.

She is also getting, non Harry Potter, a design a friend doll and accessories because she still likes these, craft kits, bath bombs, and a Sushi conveyor belt board game thing.

3littlemincemeatpies · 25/11/2019 11:30

My 8 and a half year old is LOL obsessed as well but I’ve given in and sold my soul MGA entertainment 😂 TBF on her she does play with them a lot and I do agree with previous posters if you can’t give in, be a little bit frivolous and see their little faces light up on Christmas morning opening up the things they have asked for on their Santa lists when can you.

My DD is getting

The LOL chalet
An iPad (with very strict settings and usage time!!
LOL’s
An owleez
Things for her Pony including a cross country colours set which she is going to be elated about
Books including the James Herriot treasury which is beautiful!
Frozen slime set
A bear shaped rucksack (which she seen in M&S and set her heart on)
New duvet set
Maileg mice
Chilli’s style water bottle
Mouse purse
Coat with her and ponies name on

(Juno the elephant and a bike/micro scooter (not sure which yet) from grandparents

I can’t belief I’m saying this as I know that is a lot but I will be keeping my eyes on this thread a worry her pile size will be smaller next to her sisters

Doubleraspberry · 25/11/2019 11:57

She is getting some LOL stuff but I really don’t think buying rubbish that won’t last, is overpriced, and is so very over-packaged is really something to do for her sake when she’s ultimately not fussed. She has a lovely life with a lot of treats in it and will be thrilled with what she gets because of the occasion and her own nature. I’m not depriving her of Christmas joy!
