Hello all!
I’ve given in to temptation and bought a milk frother after seeing it on the Christmas bargains thread. Anyway, can anyone with one recommend the best way to make hot chocolate with it please?
Thanks all! Smile

i like the ones from ikea

PinkDaydreams · 23/11/2019 14:22

I haven’t seen that one. I’ve just bought the Lavazza one which I can’t wait to make a hot chocolate with!

Using hot choc powder: I put in the milk, press button to get it going then add one heaped teaspoon along the edge as it whirls, don’t drop the powder in the middle. When that has dissolved, add the next and next. Then leave until it beeps. I tend to warm the mug it will go into with a bit of hot water too. Make sure you use hot choc powder for milk not water.
Using any fancy chocolate : no idea as never tried.
I do however often make a cheat’s cappuccino using standard frothed milk poured onto instant coffee granules.
Love my Lavazza :)

Is this as good as the velvetiser ? And where was it a bargain from?

Redwinestillfine · 23/11/2019 15:40

Watching with interest!

PinkDaydreams · 23/11/2019 15:46

It’s in John Lewis and amazon for £19

@BrightonBB thank you! Do you do the chocolate with frothy milk or just the hot milk cycle please?

I got mine the first moment someone mentioned them on the bargain hunting thread so I've had a bit of practice Grin

I like BIG mugs of hot chocolate so I put one lot of milk in just to warm (without the whisk in in) and pour it on the hot chocolate powder in the mug. I then put a second lot of milk in with the whisk so it's warm and frothy.

I use Twinnings powder with semi skim milk and it's gorgeous. I had been seriously contemplating the velvetiser but a lot of reviews I read said it needed full milk to get properly creamy.

Like BrightonBB I also make a cheats cappuccino by just chucking the milk on top of instant coffee or sometimes if I've just made one for a child and resisted for myself I'll just pop a bit of the foam on a black coffee

We have the Lavazza frother, makes great hot chocolate but just heat the milk in it & then pour over the hot choc powder as normal. Don't want to burn the chocolate to the inside of the frother. It comes out lovely & hot. (To be fair, DH does it & I am waited on like a queen.)

PinkDaydreams · 23/11/2019 16:33

Ok so I can put the powder either in the milk frother or in the cup. Can’t wait to try it out later!

We put the chocolate powder in the cup the n play with the frother. I didn't think it would make any difference but it does, very smooth.

flooredbored · 23/11/2019 16:54

I have the lavazza milk up milk frother. It was me who mentioned it originally on the bargains thread. When I use the grated chocolate velvetiser sachets I just put the chocolate in with the milk and heat them both together. It doesn't go really frothy, more thick and creamy. When I make cocoa or use hot chocolate powder I usually add the powder to a cup mix it with a little hot water or warm milk, sometimes I also add a syrup at this stage, then pour the hot milk on top. You do need full fat milk to get a good froth I find.

PinkDaydreams · 23/11/2019 20:58

Well I was extremely disappointed with my first hot chocolate attempt :( I clearly need some more practice! Powder in the cup, milk on the froth setting, I ended up with about 2cm of hot chocolate and the rest froth. Practice makes perfect I suppose!

Going to try again this morning but the hot milk setting, not the frothy milk.

Managed to perfect the hot chocolate! Fill to milk level, run on a heat milk cycle and add twinings hot choc powder slowly round the edge. Tip into cup. Rinse machine. Fill with milk to froth level. Put on froth cycle then add to the cup once done. Delicious!! Grin

Someone on a previous thread mentioned the Hotel Chocolat Hot choc milk Velvetiser and wanting to find it on offer. It’s RRP £100.

Looked into it and Dualit make it. Their own brand milk frother (which looks just the same really) is £49 in John Lewis.

Was thinking of trying it? Any recs??

PinkDaydreams · 24/11/2019 14:24

@BelfastNonBlonde when I was in John Lewis yesterday there were two dualit reps showing the machines to customers and making them coffee. Can you get to a store and see if you can try it out before purchasing?

No John Lewis in N Ireland unfortunately!

Will just read some reviews. My friend has the Nespresso frother. It’s ok but not frothy enough.

Veronicat · 24/11/2019 16:21

I just bought one from Aldi's. Looking forward to making my chai lattes with it.

BrightonBB · 24/11/2019 19:16

@Veronicat What do you use to make a chai latte? I fancy trying one. Thank you

Veronicat · 24/11/2019 19:47

@BrightonBB I use chai tea and steamed frothy milk with cinnamon on top. You can also use chai syrup.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 24/11/2019 20:13

Is the Ikea one the hand held whisk ? Battery operated . They do a spouted pan with the tumblers too.

I have a wooden and metal long pole whisk than you rub between the palms ....but it;s not the same as a machine that you set up and it does it all, without having to watch milk healing and avoids the skin forming

Have you looked at the Hotel Chocolat sachets ? Or the Charbonel&Walker ? Made with fine grated chocolate so not as sweet .

I saw the Aldi one online ....I am tempted but I'm not sure how often I'd use it TBH.

The Velvetiser has been on loads of threads here , don't know if it's ever on offer but QVC had it , same price , with 2xboxes of sachets+ 2 cups . (nd 3x easyPay )

Pomley · 24/11/2019 20:18

The aldi one is great! I bought a tub of Hotel Chocolat hot chocolate from an outlet, I do the same and do a hot milk cycle, add this to the cup, mix in the powder (although it's more actual chocolate isn't it) and then do a frothy cycle. I don't have one often, I usually use it to make coffee, so I have a huge mug when I do treat myself.

FinallyHere · 24/11/2019 20:37

Noooo , not powder.

Two squares high (70% plus) dark chocolate. Tablespoon water, melt in low power in microwave. Stir to smooth

Pour on frothed milk, slug of brandy enjoy.

Sugar if you must. Not needed.

Hoghgyni · 24/11/2019 20:38

Skimmed milk doesn't froth, semi skimmed gives a little froth, but whole milk whips up a treat in the Lavassa.
